by Linda Hoang @ LINDA HOANG | EDMONTON BLOG

On Feb. 12, Taste Alberta and the Alberta Diabetes Foundation are teaming up to put on the #ABFoodFight Celebrity Culinary Combat! TV food personality, author, and home economist Mairlyn Smith will “battle” local Chef Steve Brochew of the award-winning French-Canadian restaurant Chartier, in a timed food box challenge hosted by the Edmonton Journal’s food and feature writer Liane Faulder.  The event, which takes place at The Westin Edmonton downtown from 11:30-1:30, will teach attendees about healthy eating and eating local, and how these two things can help turn the tide against the diabetes epidemic in Alberta.  The Alberta Diabetes Foundation, with its #ABFoodFight campaign, is taking action to share information to help arm Albertans with the tools they need to create a healthy lifestyle, including using the rich, healthy, tapestry of products available locally. Tickets to this exciting and sure-to-be delicious fundraiser are $60 each (or $360 for a table of six).  Buy tickets to the #ABFoodFight Culinary Combat  All proceeds will support the Alberta Diabetes Foundation funding innovative research for the prevention, treatment and cure of diabetes, so it’s a truly wonderful cause, which is why I’m very excited to partner with Taste Alberta and the Alberta Diabetes Foundation to […]

Review: Alberta Ballet Presents Travis Wall’s Shaping Sound

by Linda Hoang @ LINDA HOANG | EDMONTON BLOG

This week, I was so thrilled to attend Travis Wall’s Shaping Sound: After The Curtain presented by the Alberta Ballet. As I recently shared, I used to be a huge So You Think You Can Dance fan back in its early seasons, and Travis Wall was (and still is) one of my absolute favourite dancers.  I haven’t watched SYTYCD, or any dance performance in a long time, but wowwee, did watching Travis Wall’s Shaping Sound: After the Curtain make me feel all sorts of emotions, and pull me right back into why I was so obsessed with watching dance before.  There are still tickets available for tonight’s @ShapingSoundCo performance at @itsallatthejube 7:30 pm! This is just one of the many incredible scenes in the show (ft. @traviswall @lexishimoto!) Buy tickets @albertaballet: https://t.co/Xn87oq7y9z #yeg #shapingsound pic.twitter.com/GVpDyHmjdU — Linda Hoang 💕 (@lindork) January 17, 2018 Shaping Sound: After The Curtain tells the tragic story of a man fighting his inner demons after the death of his one true love. The video above shows one of so many incredible scenes throughout the two-hour performance that puts you in a trance, and leaves you wanting more.  Human lanterns, dance fighting, ropes and flying— I saw things in […]

Guide to Instagrammable Walls of Fort McMurray

by Linda Hoang @ LINDA HOANG | EDMONTON BLOG

Over the weekend, Mike and I visited his sister and brother-in-law in Fort McMurray, Alberta. It was our first time visiting Fort McMurray and as such, I ensured our weekend itinerary included trying lots of local restaurants and mapping out Instagrammable Walls of Fort McMurray!  If this is your first time reading about my love of Instagrammable Walls, let me explain.  Finding Instagrammable Walls is one of my favourite things to do when I travel. Every city has them. Being ‘Instagrammable’ simply describes the wall’s aesthetic. These pretty, interesting coloured, textured, muralled, highly photogenic walls make a great backdrop for photos with yourself or your friends. They can be indoor or outdoor, but I’ve primarily focused on outdoor walls (they’re more accessible!) I think Instagrammable Walls add to the beauty of a city, and can attract people to a location as a destination. You’ve likely walked or driven by Instagrammable Walls but wouldn’t notice it’s ‘Instagrammable’ unless someone pointed it out. Or, maybe you note ‘that’s pretty’ but keep going. If you’re from out of town, watching for and photographing Instagrammable Walls is a really great way to explore a new place, and in today’s social media world, it gives you […]

Edmonton Chinatown Dining Week Jan 20-28, 2018 – King Noodle House

by Linda Hoang @ LINDA HOANG | EDMONTON BLOG

I’m happy to share that my parents’ Vietnamese restaurant King Noodle House Pho Hoang will be one of five participating restaurants at the first-ever Edmonton Chinatown Dining Week running Jan. 20-28, 2018!  Mom and dad will be serving up a $15 two-course dinner featuring your choice of a large size bowl of pho + a spring rolls & grilled pork balls platter! (Note: the image above is not what you would get — but close, pork balls and spring rolls will be on the same plate!)  King Noodle House Pho Hoang, 10615 97 Street (cash only) Hours: Wednesday-Sunday 10am-7:30pm. Closed Mondays & Tuesdays Appetizer: Spring rolls & grilled pork balls platter  Main: Your choice of a large size bowl of pho! I know it says they formally close at 7:30 but I wouldn’t recommend popping in after 7 just in case they decide to shutter down earlier, as they’ve done in past (lol, sorry. The perks of being the owners of a small business). I also wouldn’t advise you go on Saturday, Jan 20 any later than 3 p.m. as they’re closing early for a pre-scheduled event, but still wanted to be part of the rest of Chinatown Dining Week […]

Tips To Get Fit: Workout Motivation for the ‘Lazy Human’

by Linda Hoang @ LINDA HOANG | EDMONTON BLOG

Generally, I’m real motivated. I like to think I have a lot of ambition and drive, and am always looking for the next project to keep me busy. My motivation though, seems to end when it comes to fitness and exercise.  I just get real lazy, and I know I’m not the only one.  If I don’t have someone telling me to work out, I probably won’t.  This can be problematic considering how much I LOVE to eat, lol! With it being a new year (new you!), I thought it would be timely to blog about how to stick with your fitness goals, whether you’ve set it as a 2018 resolution, or whether you just regularly contemplate incorporating more exercise into your life, and then give up—as I have done countless times.  But why would you want fitness advice from lazy me? I figured it would be better to get some insights from the pros. Thanks to personal fitness trainer Nicole Lark, of Breathe Fitness, I’ve been on probably my longest fitness stretch ever (since August!) I am proud to say that I’ve been consistently going for a workout once a week.  Now, that might not sound like much, but remember, I’m […]

Contest: “Make My Donut” with The Rec Room (Jan. 15-29, 2018)

by Linda Hoang @ LINDA HOANG | EDMONTON BLOG

“Build your own” is a pretty cool concept. Selecting ingredients and toppings that come together to create a dish that’s perfect for my tastes? Sounds great to me.  That’s why when The Rec Room Canada asked if I wanted to partner to help spread the word about their new ‘Make My Donut’ contest, I was pretty excited to say yes!  You DONUT want to miss this contest! The Rec Room’s ‘Make My Donut’ Contest calls on you to build your own donut creation! What flavours would you put in your dream donut? Is each bite amazing? How many ingredients would you choose? Are you going for something pretty simple, or something more complex? Would it also have mass appeal? And finally, what would you call your perfect donut?  Enter the Make My Donut Contest on The Rec Room West Edmonton Mall’s Facebook Page Enter the Make My Donut Contest on The Rec Room South Edmonton Common’s Facebook Page For instance, Mike’s ideal donut— simply one covered in maple, with maple oozing from the inside. For me? I think a matcha green-tea flavoured donut with a lychee glaze would be of interest. Alternatively, if there’s a way to infuse potato chips with donuts, […]

DIY: Make Your Own Super Bowl Snack Stadium

by Linda Hoang @ LINDA HOANG | EDMONTON BLOG

I’m not what you’d call an avid football fan, but I do enjoy cheering on my local team from time to time (#GoEsksGo!) and I also love cheering on a team if there’s game day food involved.  That’s why earlier this month I was really excited about the Super Bowl—not necessarily because of the underdog Eagles (though it was great to see them win!)—but because it meant I could take the opportunity to finally cross off something that’s been on my food bucket list for quite some time:  Making a Super Bowl Snack Stadium!  Now, I remember in the early days of Pinterest (that’s how long I’ve been wanting to do a Super Bowl Snack Stadium lol), when photos of these impressive football stadiums built out of and featuring snacks, first caught my eye. They were a sight to behold. There were savoury stadiums, dessert stadiums, sandwich stadiums.  Now, if you think about it… a stadium built out of food and sitting out for hours, with tons of people picking at it, is kind of gross. So it’s probably a good thing that I kept missing the Super Bowl over the years—never getting the chance to create that Snack Stadium—because now, […]

Review: El Fogón Latino: Authentic Venezuela Cuisine

by Linda Hoang @ LINDA HOANG | EDMONTON BLOG

Some of my favourite restaurants often end up being hole-in-the-wall types. Small, family-run, serving quality, delicious food at affordable prices, but maybe isn’t the slickest or hippest looking spot—and that’s okay, because everything else is wonderful.  I’d say El Fogón Latino: Comida Venezolana, an authentic, Venezuelan restaurant located at 8026 118 Avenue, is exactly that.  El Fogón has been open for about eight months. Interestingly, it opened around the same time as the other Venezuelan arepas restaurant in Edmonton— Avila Arepas on Whyte Ave. I had never had an arepas before I tried Avila in November (see my review here) but now I’d like to have them all the time! And thankfully have even more options, with El Fogón now too.  My friend Sharon (of Only Here for the Food) first introduced me to El Fogón just before Christmas. My pal Sharman (of This Piggy’s Tale) also recently visited El Fogón, and raved about it too. (Arepas, corn buns that are sort of like tacos, are gluten-free because they are made of corn flour, so people who have celiac disease, like Sharman, can totally gorge.) Eager to return after my first visit, I brought my friend Gina to El Fogón this […]

Giveaway: Alberta Ballet Presents: Travis Wall’s Shaping Sound

by Linda Hoang @ LINDA HOANG | EDMONTON BLOG

Something more recent followers of this blog or my social media may not know about me is I used to be a huge So You Think You Can Dance fan. In its initial seasons (specifically, seasons 1-4 from about 2005 to 2009), I basically lived and breathed all things SYTYCD. Connecting to the dancers on the show was actually the reason I started using Twitter back in 2006!  I was such a fan of this show, and its incredibly talented dancers, that back then, I even took trips to L.A. and Portland for the live tours, and I started and managed what ended up being very popular fan sites for two of my favourite SYTYCD dancers — Travis Wall (S2) and Mark Kanemura (S4). (Sadly, the fan sites no longer exist).  Dancers like Travis, Mark, and the rest of SYTYCD’s talented contestants, led me to love watching dance performances. I even took a few dance classes as a result!    Despite seeing a lot of the SYTYCD dancers on stage over the years, something I never got to do was watch Travis perform live. When the Alberta Ballet recently reached out to see if I wanted to attend one of their shows and share […]
