Get Your Day Off to an Organic Start
by Desiree Nielsen RD @ Nature’s Path - General
Mon Sep 21 00:00:00 PDT 2015
I love mornings…particularly on the rare occasion I get to wake up before anyone else in the house.
At their best, mornings are filled with promise and good intentions. It’s easier to make better choices when your mind is clear of the accumulated clutter of the day. Which is why it makes sense to start your morning in the healthiest way possible – it sets the tone for a day filled with better choices. A day where you put your health first.
Why Breakfast
It’s an old adage, that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Scientifically, the jury is still out - but practically, it makes a lot of sense. From the science perspective, breakfast eaters seem to have better regulated blood sugars1 than breakfast abstainers but the effect on overall weight has been mixed.
From a real world perspective, eating a good breakfast allows you to fill your belly at a time of day when you are less likely to be driven by cravings. It refills your energy tank after a long overnight fast so that you can start the day alert and energized. Eating breakfast also helps you avoid the ravenous hunger later in the morning that will almost certainly lead to poor choices at snack time or lunch.
If you want your body to perform well, you need to nourish it well. Trying to get everything you need for your day out of just two meals is a bit tough. Breakfast provides another opportunity to make smart, plant-centered choices that keep you strong and healthy.
Why Organic
When eating organic is important to you, breakfast is also an easy time to make this happen. Why go organic? The evidence base is building to show that there is a significant difference in the composition of organic and conventional foods. One 2014 meta-analysis2 found that conventional foods have four times the rate of pesticide residues; this same review found increased levels of antioxidant vitamins and anti-inflammatory phenols and flavonols in organic foods.
Evidence is clear that eating organic helps eaters avoid residues of potentially harmful pesticides such as glyphosate3, a chemical pesticide that recently the World Health Organization has declared “probably carcinogenic”4. Early associations between health outcomes and eating organic are also emerging. A Norwegian study found an association between eating organic vegetables and lower risk of pre-eclampsia in pregnant women5.
At their worst, mornings can be frantic and stressful but a healthy breakfast is probably the quickest meal of the day to pull off. Organic whole grain cereals, fresh or frozen fruit, raw nuts & seeds, topped off with milk or vegetarian alternatives like organic soy or quinoa are easy and inexpensive to have on hand. And if things really get too crazy, you can pack up the whole meal to eat at your desk without too much fuss.
September is the new January, or so they say. If you are ready to jump back to health this fall, perhaps don’t go for the all-or-nothing approach. Commit to better self-care by making yourself a healthy, organic start to the day. Let health bloom organically, one meal at a time!

Miessence in BC Canada
by noreply@blogger.com (J.G.) @ Beautiful. Natural. Organic.
Thu Jan 21 20:48:00 PST 2010
I am an independent rep for Miessence, located in Terrace BC. There are only a handful of Miessence reps in the Northwest, and as one, I am looking forward to educating this area of BC about these beautiful, natural, organic products.
I decided to join Miessence because of the obvious unavailability of natural personal care products within Terrace, and all of Northern BC for that matter. I know how hard it can be to find great quality. I mean true quality. Not just a fancy package with a high price. What I am talking about is quality ingredients. Unadulturated, pure, organic ingredients, that I am not worried about putting on myself or my children. Miessence gives me exactly that. Quality, organic products at a fair price that I use on my entire family.
I have replaced all of my personal care products with Miessence pro ductsbecause I am sure that it is 100% safe and free of toxins. I use the shampoo and body wash on my 2, 4 and 6 year old, my husband, and myself. It is that mild, and smells wonderful. Im not left wondering if there are dangerous chemicals sitting on there skin after they are washed, dried and dressed. They also use the mint toothpaste that is flouride free, so I dont worry if someone swallows any. They dont mind that it doesnt taste like bubble gum :) My husband and I use the shaving lotion, deoderant, moisturizers, cleansers, hand soap, and just about everything else. Everyone also gets a glass of juice every morning with Inliven, a certified organic probiotic superfood powder. We rarely get sick, and I think it has alot to do with not just what we put into our body, but what we put ON our body.
Our skin absorbs anything we put on it. If we suffocate it with silicones, and lather it in Sodium Laurel Sulfate, and spray it with methylparabens we are likely to experience excema, headaches, psoriasis, coughing, wheezing, and any number of allergic responses. Its not because we have sensitive skin, its because we are putting toxic substances on our skin, and our skin is screaming STOP!
On the flip side, if we nurture our skin with organic ingredients like Aloe Vera, chamomile, calendula, and marshmallow, our skin will become soft, smooth and radiant. Our hair will shine. Our body will detoxify and purify and rid itself of all the garbage its had to deal with in the past. It wont be long before you notice a change and wonder how you ever used the "other" stuff.
Whether you live in Norhern BC, Eastern Canada, the US, or anywhere in the world, you can browse my online store here. You will find facts about toxic chemicals, information on how Miessence is different, browse or buy products, or even ask me a question. Id love to hear from you! Shipping is very fast and free for orders over $100. Under $100 is still very affordable at less that $10.
Let Miessence show you what true quality is. Your body will thank you for it!
Study Proves Fish Oil Supplements Don’t Protect You From Heart Disease

It seems that omega-3 in supplements doesn’t pack the same punch as the essential fatty acids found in fish. Fish oil is one of the most commonly used supplements: millions of people consume it daily in the form of softgels, capsules, or tablets, believing that it will lower their risk of developing cardiovascular issues. Even the American Heart Association advises people with a history of heart conditions to supplement omega-3 in their diets. But a new study by British scientists reveals that, sadly, these supplements have very little to do with your heart’s health. Up until now, doctors advised anyone

How Healthy Probiotics Can Better Your Breakfast
by Kelly Liston @ Nature’s Path - General
Tue Sep 08 11:55:07 PDT 2015
I think it is fair to say that yogurt is a staple in many homes. I grew up eating it and now I make it for my family. People eat yogurt is not only because it’s delicious, but because it offers the benefit of probiotics. Yogurt contains live cultures (or, ‘probiotics’) that populate the human gut (or intestinal tract) with good bacteria. We all know that eating live foods or taking a probiotic supplement is good for our gut health, but do we know why? What do those bugs in our belly actually do?
Did you know that our bodies contain more than 100 trillion bacteria and our gut contains between 2 ½ and 4 pounds of bacteria at any given time? These bacteria are comprised of both “good” or ‘probiotic’ bacteria (such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium) and “bad” or ‘pathogenic’ bacteria. In order for our gut to be in proper balance, the ratio of bacteria should be 80% “good” to 20% “bad”. Not only that, but eighty percent of our immune system lies in the gut. So, keeping that gut nice and healthy keeps our immune systems in tip-top shape!
So, what do bacteria do for us?
Why do we want to support our gut with healthy bacteria? I have heard people say that they eat yogurt because it helps their digestion. That’s true! But that’s not all…
- Bacteria digest food and in that process they produce vitamins – namely B and K.
- Bacteria regulate our hormones, get rid of toxins, and help us absorb nutrients.
- Good bacteria crowd out invading pathogens and maintain a healthy immune system.
- Bacteria balance intestinal pH and protect and heal the intestinal walls.
Gosh! So many responsibilities for these little bacteria! Can you see why it is so important to keep a healthy and vibrant population of good bacteria in your gut?
How do you do that? I like to keep it simple. Eat real, whole foods. This will allow the beneficial bacteria to flourish. And eat fermented or cultured foods. A bite of traditionally prepared foods like sauerkraut, dilly carrots, and yogurt can provide trillions of units of bacteria that are ready and willing to report for duty inside of your gut.
Yogurt is a great food to add to your diet, if you need to get your gut bacteria into balance! Yogurt is a well-known food and easy to find at your local grocery store. When sorting through all of your yogurt options, go through a Good/Better/Best checklist.
Your good/ better/ best yogurt checklist
- A GOOD yogurt option: whole fat yogurt with no sugar added*.
- A BETTER yogurt option: an organic whole fat yogurt with no sugar added*
- The BEST yogurt option: an organic milk yogurt with no added sugar, OR – homemade yogurt!
*Low-fat yogurts with added sugar are highly processed and these two factors work against the mission of the healthy bacteria.
Did you know that making your own yogurt at home is incredibly simple – not to mention super affordable and healthy? All you need is whole milk and some yogurt for a starter. Try my easy method for homemade yogurt, top it off with your favorite organic granola and serve a delicious, nutritious breakfast to your family.

Supercharge Your Summer Snacks with Fermented Fruits
by Tamara Mannelly @ Nature’s Path - General
Tue Jul 21 16:08:25 PDT 2015
If you’re anything like me, summer is all about healthy, on the go snacks. After riding bikes, playing outside with friends, even doing chores around the house, my daughter is always begging for something to snack on. I love being able to give her (and myself!) something that is nourishing, filling and tastes delicious. And on hot days at the beach, having a nice cooling snack is a bonus.
When a snack has healthy fats, protein, and whole grains and seeds, I definitely know it’s one I can feel good about. I know that a snack packed with superfoods will provide long-lasting energy.
However, I like to add a nutrient dense boost to our snacks. You know what can take a snack to the next level? Fermented foods! Yep, that is right! I love a snack that has fermented goodness in there too, for my whole family.
Why are fermented foods so great?
Fermentation is an ancient form of preservation that comes with a lot of benefits:
- Fermented foods help maintain a healthy digestive tract.
- Fermented foods are easier to digest.
- Fermented foods offer more vitamins, particularly B-vitamins and vitamin K2.
- Fermented foods are chock full of good bacteria. 1/3 cup serving can contain over 10 trillion units of bacteria!
- The lactic acid in fermented foods helps balance the pH level of our gut…encouraging the growth of healthy bacteria.
- Fermented foods help boost the immune system.
One of my favorite types of fermented foods to eat, particularly in the summer, is fermented fruit. Almost any fruit can be fermented: berries, applesauce, peach chutney, lemonade, orange juice, bananas…anything!
Due to the sugar content naturally occurring in fruit, the fermentation process happens very quickly (12-48 hours depending on temperature in your kitchen). Fermented fruits do not last as long as fermented vegetables in the refrigerator, but generally they will last 3-4 weeks. That usually isn’t a problem, though, as we eat them faster than that!
You can add fermented fruits and juices to cereals and oatmeal, yogurt, and smoothies, or just enjoy on their own. Puree them up and dehydrate at a low temperature for a probiotic fruit leather. Add them to homemade popsicles and use the fermented liquid as a flavored vinegar for salad dressing or as a delicious drink.
How do you ferment fruits? Easy!
Here is our Quick Start Guide to Fermenting Fruit:
- Gather the fruit you want to ferment. Wash. Slice.
- Put fruit in a clean quart size Mason jar.
- Add ½ tsp sea salt (you don’t want your fruit to be salty but sea salt helps keep pathogenic bacteria at bay).
- Add ½ tsp culture starter or 2 tbsp liquid whey.
- Fill the jar with filtered water, leaving about 1 ½ inch headspace.
- Be sure the fruit is below the liquid level, using a weight if necessary.
- Tighten lid and leave at room temperature for 12-48 hours. Fruit tends to ferment very quickly.
- Taste (with a clean spoon) to see if you like it and transfer to the refrigerator.
- Fruit ferments should be enjoyed within a month.
My new favorite fruit ferment this summer has been fermented bananas. I just slice the bananas up, follow the directions above and end up with a delicious, probiotic rich treat. We have been adding them to smoothies, topping our granola and oatmeal and adding them to yogurt, but my favorite recipe for an on the go snack has been our Frozen Granola Bars – check out the recipe here.
