Giving your cat a pill

by LifeLearn Admin @ Veterinarians Port Alberni, BC | Alberni Veterinary Clinic

The easiest way to give your cat a pill is to hide the pill in food. This usually works best if the pill is hidden in a small amount of tuna or cream cheese. To ensure that the pill is actually taken, it is best to give a small amount of food that the cat is certain to eat rather than a large portion that the cat may not complete. Some cats may spit out the pill, so it is important to monitor this activity. If your cat persists in spitting out the pills or if dietary restrictions prevent you from hiding the pills in an appealing treat, you will need to administer the pill directly into the cat’s mouth.

Some cats may be unwilling to eat the food or may have dietary restrictions that prevent you from using this technique. If this is the case, you will need to administer the medication directly into the cat’s mouth.

Recipe: Holiday Energy Bites

by noreply@blogger.com (Sarah Stark) @ Sarah Stark, Nutritionist & Certified Fitness Professional

It's the end of October, we've gotten over the Thanksgiving feasts (in Canada), and the next 2 months are scattered with more gatherings, holiday markets & celebrations, harvest foods....and health kicks? Yup, health kicks. November is one of the busiest months in the health & fitness industry. It's a massive "Transformation" and "Detox" month. So here is a great solution for you; Holiday Energy Bittes.

Holiday Energy Bites are loaded with protein, healthy fats, fibre and joint-supporting omegas!

I made these with warming spices, seasonal foods and also a couple of tasty twists. Both versions are made from the same batch; you'll get variety. Make a big batch, get creative and freeze some up. It’ll be a huge time and money saver for you; stop buying those packaged, high sugar energy bars.

I made these using one of my favourite harvest foods; Sweet Potatoes. Then made them to taste like my two favourite fall & winter flavour combos; Chai and Chocolate-Peppermint. They’re high in protein, healthy fats and fibre. They keep in the fridge for about 3 days, and you can freeze them.  The Chai version also has added calcium, from the sesame seeds.

Sarah Stark’s Holiday Energy Bites

To begin, you start it all as one batch. You’ll divide the batch up later.  Preheat the oven to 350F. Then slice sweet potatoes in half, place face (cut side) down on baking sheet.

  1. Bake for 20 minutes, turn over and coat the upper (cut) side with cinnamon. Bake another 10 minutes, or until soft.
  2. Remove from oven, allow to cool for 20 minutes.
  3. Remove from peels and place the sweet potatoes in a mixing bowl.
  4. Add to mixing bowl:
2 tbsp Creamed Coconut (Grace brand)
2 tbsp hemp seeds, hulled
1 tsp organic, cold-pressed coconut oil
1/2 tsp ceylon cinnamon (Cha’s brand)
1 - 2 pinches of himalayan salt
  1. Mash it all together very well, with a fork or potato masher.
  2. SPLIT the batch into two bowls. Now you’re going to flavour them.

Chai Holiday Energy Bites
Add to bowl:
½ tsp ceylon cinnamon
¼ tsp ground cardamom
¼  tsp ground nutmeg
⅛ tsp ground cloves
Pinch of himalayan salt
Mash it all together. Use a tablespoon to spoon out ball, roll in your hands and then coat in sesame seeds. Roll once more. Place in glass container to store in fridge.

Chocolate-Peppermint Energy Bites
Add to bowl:
2 tbsp raw cacao powder
1 tbsp hemp seeds
1 tsp creamed coconut, crumbled with a fork
2 - 3 drops of pure peppermint oil (Simply Organics brand)
2 pinces of himalayan salt
Mash it all together. Use a tablespoon to spoon out ball, roll in your hands and then coat in sesame seeds. Roll once more. Place in glass container to store in fridge.
