Dear not so perfect but very real mom

by noreply@blogger.com (Gabrielle) @ Life's about the ride, not the destination

You are not alone.

If we got together and peeked at each other's lives you might discover that my life too is of that not so perfect caliber as well. Sure, I love Pinterest and pin a bunch of things, like, ahem, maybe close to one thousand, but the things that I really do? Honestly? I can't think of more than five. They're interesting, inspiring, and creative, but most days I find myself working to keep things on track that I don't have time to do those extras. Yeah, I share pictures on Facebook, but most often they're of the fabulous and cute and fun moments and not those moments where I'm fretting over the family room floor where the bag of chips was just spilled and crushed.

In fact, right now, I'm almost caught up on laundry. Almost, and I say it with a laugh because for the entire weekend I worked on getting caught up because I was so behind. I'm sure there is a pin or an article or an awesome system on laundry. Actually, I know of a site for just laundry written by a domestic goddess  Did she write it because she's perfect and has the system down? No. She wrote it because she, too, needed to develop a plan and a target for that pesky thing called laundry.

Right now, I have dishes in my sink waiting to be washed. And it's the afternoon, and in my ideal mind would have had them done before I went to bed, but last night I chose to watch Caillou with my boys versus spend the time in my kitchen. That, a wise choice? It's a choice that values them more than those dishes. Which, will get done in the next hour or so anyways. Yet, it's easy to look in the kitchen in these very wee hours of the morning and to think that I don't have it all together and miss that in that instant I chose to do the real important.

But this perfect mom thing? This superhero mom? The mom that never loses her cool? Well, she just doesn't exist. Ever. I've come to this realization about motherhood nowadays and how the phrase surviving motherhood has become one that you and I hear. What's interesting is that one thousand years ago we needed to simply survive, and now we need to survive and we're also surviving motherhood.

Why the extra? It's from the extras. The extra time, the media, the pressures of a culture where time can be emphasized on things beyond simply putting food on our table. Which, no matter what, is still very challenging for many and so now there is not only the real need to survive but also this unspoken of pressure of surviving and measuring up. But now, you and I, and the moms at preschool or in the line at Starbucks waiting to try the hazelnut macchiato and the moms at home with the newborns and the moms in the office working away and the moms driving and all of us moms together live in a time where we are being told you must be perfect and happy and creative and do every single thing you had to do in the past and now you must raise perfect kids and you the mother must not make a mistake. Ever.

And instead of thriving often it feels like surviving.

What about the difference that you're making in the world? Which you are, right now. I know that sometimes it doesn't feel like such a difference when you rinse those dishes and put them in the dishwasher and sweep the floor {again} and tie some shoes, fold some socks, teach math facts, hovel the driveway, vacuum the chips up, and drive to soccer. But, it's a difference. Those kids, who call you mother, watch you and know that you'll be there for them. That matters. They know that when they wake up and cry mom that you'll come. Will you always be chipper? No. If you're like me some mornings you'll simply say it's not morning go back to bed so you can get just five more minutes of sleep. But you'll get up, and you'll help them get dressed, and help them get to doing what they need to do. That is what matters.

Don't let the perfect mom ideal discourage. Remember those pins? If finishing those pinterest pins defined the mom that had it together than I wouldn't be sleeping. All of this excess information is just there as information that you and I can choose to do. Or not to do. It's not a requirement for motherhood success.  Instead I want you to embrace all you do accomplish each day. Start looking at your day and celebrating you, your family, and motherhood. Don't tell me it's just anything, because you know how I feel about adding just in front of anything. Don't qualify motherhood - embrace motherhood. If you could pin every single thing that you did in one day that made a difference you would have a board full. In one day. Think about that.

And you know what? Not liking it, having a hard day, struggling, wondering if you matter, and if you're making a difference are normal days. But so are the good days. Which you have - you just need to start recording them and remembering them. If you have a good day mark it down, write a friend, but remember. Start to look at your life with the lens that celebrates the good, the powerful, and the simple beautiful things as well.

You and I can be a generation of women that celebrates the power in motherhood. We can encourage each other to rise up, to begin again, and to finish well. We can push the myth of the perfect mom to the curb and instead embrace the real mom with all of her flaws but the tenacity and spirit of a fighter. Instead of spending time watching, judging, and comparing - we can be a culture that extends a hand, listens, encourages, and supports. You know why? Because our children watch. And our children are going to do life, and do this parenting thing together.

So dear not so perfect but very real mom, we are in this together. It's not a competition. It's a journey, a life that we're doing. This motherhood portion? It's part of our story - it's that part that makes us stronger, pushes us to our limits, sharpens our spirit, and unearths the hero in us that is so often forgotten. And it's for doing something absolutely amazing - it's for being the mom, the not so perfect mom, who loves her kids and knows she makes mistakes, but still keeps on going.

Do motherhood today. With your head held high, brushing off the mistakes, vacuuming the floor, loving on your kids, and celebrating the victories.

Cherrs!
From me.... a very unperfect and very real mom

My heart

by noreply@blogger.com (Gabrielle) @ Life's about the ride, not the destination

I'm not completely off the grid, just very busy living life.

Folks the theme this week is...I suck very much at achieving balance in my life. I do everything to the limit - working, loving, nurturing, teaching, listening....and then wear myself out and turn into a raving and ranting lunatic. I try to be positive here, but sometimes life is not a piece of cake with rose colored glasses.

What do I have to complain about....

Today I feel worn out by parenting. My children are the best really.... they are healthy, intelligent, sweet, understanding, social, open, inquisitive, loving little boys (I should have stopped at healthy and be thankful for that). But I feel like I am giving in all directions and not receiving. They are 3 and 4.... and I know I am a jerk nut job to expect that they will appreciate all that I do for them. Its just sometimes the noise it too much, the bickering is too much, the demands are too much. Momma needs a damn vacation!

But, as I was trying to calm down and reflect on today in my Savasana yoga pose... a blissful moment in all this craziness that is life came to mind that I am sure in my old age I will look back upon and want to smile and cry at the same time.

This morning, as I was waking up, Simon ran into my room, jumped in my bed and curled into my body, his nose pressed into the hollow space between my clavicle bones, his prickly head under my chin. He held a turquoise heart I had given each boy after a trip to Montreal between his thumb and forefinger. The tiny hearts were to remind them of how much I loved them, even when we are not together. I figured they had lost these as I had not seen them in a while. But no my boy held onto it, hiding it in his keepsake box. He told me he had a dream about going to school the night before. About what? I asked. He shrugged.

I asked him what he imagined when he thought about kindergarten. Well, I have lots of new friends. And my teacher is like SO nice. I told him I’d miss him and that I was excited for him . It is a new and exciting journey! He was squeezing the heart and shinned with joy. I said that the blue heart is my heart resting against his. And that if he ever felt sad or happy or afraid or proud or anything at all, he could touch that heart and know I was feeling those things too and to imagine me right beside him.

He looked up at me, into me.

Mom? I feel funny. When you said that, it made me feel so happy but I also feel like I might cry. It’s weird. Can you say it again?

Wow… the purity of the world through a child's eyes. What gorgeous words. What an amazing display of innocence when my little can beautifully describe his juxtaposing feelings without judgement or fear. I love that kids teach us to be parents.

I don't know what happens next... I wish I wouldn't feel like I'm pulled in all directions. I wish parenting didn't overwhelm me, scare me and turn me into a huffing and puffing (and sometimes sweating) green monster. But what I know is I am here for him, with him, by his side, because of him. I am relieved and happy to walk with my arm around his capable shoulders. I am so thankful for this day, everyday. I will listen, I will love. I will let myself feel sad and happy and thankful and I will take a deep, intentional gulp of today's joyful oxygen.

All my mistakes

by noreply@blogger.com (Gabrielle) @ Life's about the ride, not the destination

When I crawled out of bed, you were still sleeping; lashes flush across your cheeks and one arm thrown out across the bed as if you were claiming all of it as your own.  I was as silent as possible, slipping into the cold hallway, and gently closing the door behind me; you needed your sleep.  Once my green tea was made and I was curled and tucked feet over ankle onto the sofa, I pulled out my computer and skimmed the words I wrote.  My yearning felt palpable in the cool morning, the feeling of not quite being who or what I wanted to be, the feeling of needing to feel more, be more, have more.  I drew in a deep sigh and clicked down the lid, shutting out the memories.

I've made a lot of mistakes in my life.

I've loved and lost and loved and lost and loved again until I thought my heart would explode.  I've loved in secret, I've loved too loudly… I've loved the wrong and right sorts of men for the better part of twenty some odd years, if you discount elementary school … and I do.  I spent the better part of high school loving a boy who in the end didn't know how to love. I spent the better part of university doing the same. I fell in love with the first man who really loved me and spending many years loving him.

I've spent too many nights drinking, too many nights in tears over this or that friend or this or that experience. I've lost friends to drunk driving and to pride both theirs and mine.  I've woken up in places I should have never been, gone to sleep in places I should have never visited, and dated boys who should have never known my name…. and hell, they probably didn't anyways (don’t do that, please).

I’m not perfect…. I’m so very, very far from perfect.

Sometimes, I feel the weight of my imperfections pounding down around my ears.  I remember the fun I used to have, the life I used to live.  I’d like to run back to high school or college, or the years landing my first job and not having a care in the world… wanting to run far away from the person I've become… this responsible adult who pays the bills “on time” (well mostly), and who goes to bed at a reasonable hour unless I stay up to watch Revenge or Vampire Dairies.  I look at the grey hairs (you don’t see them cause Momma plucks them out!), the wrinkles who threaten to make their appearance, the stretch marks on my body and I wonder when this all happened.  I wonder if all that’s left for me is to just keep getting older and farther away from the person I wanted to be not so very long ago.

This morning, I was tired and life, all of it, felt like it was heavy with no purpose… with no rhyme or reason. Then, just after I poured my second cup of tea, I heard the door creak open and the slapping of both your feet in the hallway.  You rounded the corner into the living room and stood there for a moment, rubbing your eyes with your hair crooked in too many directions. Then you smiled your perfect gaping smile and your steps quickened until you threw yourself at me and tucked into the curve of my side, your head resting against my shoulder.  I kissed the top of your head and in that moment, everything shifted and turned and churned and then righted itself.

I've made a lot of mistakes in my life. I know I have many more to make. I have done careless and foolish and hurtful things but I've also done amazing and beautiful and wonderful things. Like you.

If it took hangovers like you wouldn't believe, loving until my heart wanted to shatter, loosing friends and losing sight of myself over and over and over again….. that’s okay.  Because all those mistakes, every single one of them, weave through the fabric of who I am today.  They pulse in and around me, reminding me that of all the people I've been in my life, this is the one I most need to be.  Who I am today is the best and most amazing version of me that I could ever be. Because who I am today is your mother. A confident, energetic, powerful, kind and loving mother.

When you get older and you wonder why I’m so hard on you, wonder why I think I have all the answers and all the truths… when you feel like I will never, ever, EVER understand what it’s like to be young or carefree… when you wonder if I even love you at all because (horror) I won’t let you have the car or drink beer or go to the beach with your friends… remember this truth: I have made mistakes in my life and I will make many more as I navigate this parenting gig.  But you, my wonderful boys? Who you are is 100% not one of them and never will be.  Even when it hurts you or me or both of us, every decision I make now is born out of my love for you… even the ones you “know” are wrong.  So be patient with me, as I am with you.  Because we will both make many mistakes before we leave this place.

The realest truth I've ever known of MY life is simply this:  if it took every second of hurt that I've experienced in my life to bring me to the point where I get the privilege of being your mother, of making these decisions… right and wrong?

Then, yes. It was, and is, all so very, very worth it… even all my mistakes.
