Steroid free Day 10

by noreply@blogger.com (Kevin Eugene) @ Escaping Topical Steroid Addiction

Greetings to all your beautiful people out there. The beer blog will be taking a temporary hiatus as I will be focusing this blog on my hopeful recovery of pseudo eczema.

Now most of you know I suffer from what I'd always believed was eczema. At work, people have seen me tape my fingers. In jitsu, it wouldn't be uncommon place for me to breakfall a couple time and have my hand open up with sores and cuts. And in general, all of you have seen me scratch. No lie it's true.

In my never ending search for something to avail me of this living hell I had search and visited anyone that would listen.

Western Medicine has me on topical steroids in addition to PUVA, Protopic Ointment and Oral Prednisone along the way.

The naturopath said I might have leaky gut syndrome and should take lots of Omega 3s, probiotics and ACESe + Zn to help sort it out. They also mentioned I might have food sensitivities to Dairy, Eggs, Soy and a bunch of other stuff.

Recently, the food sensitivities thing proved true with more and more food causing flares. Removing dairy, whey, eggs, soy, chicken, tomatoes and strawberries would cause minimal cracking in the hands. This never made sense to me though since I would eat all these things as a child and none of the current symptoms had ever shown. It's almost as if the eczema had evolved.

Even with that though my eczema didn't subside and most recently I had the worst flare up ever seen post grading season and move. During the move, I watched my hands crack and bleed beyond control and even remember seeing the healthy skin fall off a small portion of my hand as I washed it causing an open sore. My immediate response to this was to add polysporin and of course steroid creams to tame the flare.

But, for all my efforts, the chronic swelling and cracking did not go away. Seeing how my right hand wouldn't even close for about two weeks straight, I once again turned to the internet.

A few recommended the candida diet to help ease overgrowth of candida in the gut. I have been observing this diet in some form for a couple weeks now and seeing some mild aid. Moreover though, in my internet search, I found one individual who had tried candida and now trying Topical Steroid Withdrawl and was seeing skin healing.

What is TSW? The short answer is that TSW is an acknowledgement that Topical Steroids are actually the cause of eczema like symptoms after chronic use. Years of use has caused the subdermal layers to thin beyond functional use which results in the epidermal thickening and resulting eczema look. Additionally, the adrenals start to misbehave as the steroids start to go systemic with changes.

The simple answer recommended by ITSAN? Cease and desist all topical steroids immediately. The result? Full recovery of pseudo eczema (termed Red Skin Syndrome) over the course of months and years.

Now considering my hand was falling apart with mere skin washing, I am more than happy to give this a try. I am currently 10 days in and have already seen a marked reduction in hand swelling. My natural itch has gone up but that's normal since the systemic steroids have been removed since they are no longer bleeding in through the skin. Over time many TSW bloggers have now seen relief of RSS/TSW and I'm throwing my hat into the fold in hopes that if this works, someone may find this and find the inspiration to endure TSW to find their own relief.

Let the battle begin!

Curcumin Supplementation May Impart Long-Term Cognitive Benefits

Story at-a-glance
  • Curcumin, a bioactive ingredient in the spice turmeric, has over 160 potentially therapeutic activities, including anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and anticancer benefits
  • Recent research suggests curcumin may have long-term effects on your cognitive function by protecting against brain inflammation. By boosting mood, it may also help prevent depression
  • Compared to controls, patients who took 90 mg of curcumin for 18 months experienced a 28 percent improvement in memory; brain scans also show they had less brain plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease
  • Research also suggests curcumin may offer potent protection against cancer, and it’s been shown to enhance conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy
  • Consumed alone in its raw form, bioavailability of curcumin is poor; however, there are formulas and methods that improve absorption. The addition of piperine can increase absorption of curcumin by 2,000 percent
By Dr. Mercola
Turmeric, a yellow curry spice used in Indian cuisine, has a long history of medicinal use in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine. Modern science has confirmed many of its ancient claims, and curcumin alone — one of the most well studied bioactive ingredients in turmeric — has been shown to have over 160 potentially therapeutic activities.
Studies suggest it can be a powerful ally in the treatment of depression, cancer, inflammatory bowel diseases and rheumatoid arthritis, for example. Many of curcumin's benefits are attributed to its ability to quench inflammation, which is a hallmark of most chronic diseases, from obesity and metabolic syndrome to heart disease and dementia.
Importantly, it has the ability to cross your blood-brain barrier and exhibits potent neuroprotective properties, suggesting it may be useful for neurodegenerative disorders. Researchers at the University of California recently demonstrated it may have long-term effects on your cognitive function by protecting against brain inflammation.1
Curcumin May Protect Against Dementia
The double-blind, placebo-controlled study, published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry,2 included 40 adults between the ages of 50 and 90 who reported mild memory lapses. None had a diagnosis of dementia at the time of their enrollment. Participants randomly received either 90 milligrams (mg) of curcumin (Theracurmin supplement) twice a day for 18 months, or a placebo.
A standardized cognitive assessment was administered at the start of the study and at six-month intervals thereafter, and the level of curcumin in their blood was measured at the beginning and end of the study. Thirty of the participants also underwent positron emission tomography (PET) scans to assess their level of amyloid and tau deposits before and after treatment, which are strongly associated with Alzheimer's risk.
Those who received curcumin saw significant improvements in memory and concentration, while the control group experienced no improvement. The treatment group also reported better mood, and PET scans confirmed they had significantly less amyloid and tau buildup in areas of the brain that control memory and emotion, compared to controls. Overall, the curcumin group improved their memory by 28 percent over the year-and-a-half-long treatment period. As reported by Science Daily:3
"The researchers plan to conduct a follow-up study with a larger number of people. That study will include some people with mild depression so the scientists can explore whether curcumin also has antidepressant effects. The larger sample also would allow them to analyze whether curcumin's memory-enhancing effects vary according to people's genetic risk for Alzheimer's, their age or the extent of their cognitive problems.
'These results suggest that taking this relatively safe form of curcumin could provide meaningful cognitive benefits over the years,' said Small, UCLA's Parlow-Solomon professor on aging."
Curcumin — A Powerful Neuroprotectant
Curcumin has also been shown to increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)4 and this may be yet another mechanism that can help explain its neuroprotective effects.5 Reduced levels of BDNF has been linked to both depression and Alzheimer's disease.
Researchers have also discovered that curcumin has an effect on several pathways in your body that may reverse insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia and other symptoms associated with metabolic syndrome and obesity,6 and this too can lower your risk of dementia and Alzheimer's. Autopsies reveal people with high blood sugar tend to have greater amounts of amyloid plaque in their brains, and diabetics have a 65 percent higher risk of Alzheimer's disease than nondiabetics.7,8
Curcumin Shown to Relieve Symptoms of Depression
As in the featured study, earlier research has also demonstrated curcumin's mood-boosting effect, suggesting it may be helpful against depression. A 2017 meta-analysis9 of six short-term, placebo-controlled clinical trials concluded curcumin "appears to be safe, well-tolerated and efficacious among depressed patients," and could serve as a "novel antidepressant." Three of the trials also reported significant anti-anxiety effects.
Another recent study10,11 evaluating curcumin's effect on depression was done in Australia. A total of 123 people diagnosed with major depressive disorder were included in the double-blind, randomized study, receiving either 250 or 500 mg of curcumin extract, 250 mg of curcumin with 15 mg of saffron, or a placebo, for three months.
Compared to placebo, all three treatment groups experienced improvement in their symptoms. Curcumin was particularly effective for those with atypical depression. Interestingly, there was no significant difference in efficacy between the dosages. (On a side note, saffron has also been shown to have antidepressant effects in a number of studies,12,13,14,15 which is why it was included in one of the treatment groups here.)
A second scientific review16 — also published last year — concluded curcumin may be beneficial not only for depression but also on a number of other psychiatric disorders, thanks to its anti-inflammatory effects. According to the authors:
"[C]urcumin can influence an array of biological activities. Many of these, such as its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective and monoaminergic effects are dysregulated in several neuropsychiatric disorders …
[I]n vitro, animal and human studies investigating … curcumin as a treatment for neuropsychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder … and autism are reviewed … It is concluded that curcumin is a promising, natural agent for many of these conditions …"

In addition to its neuroprotective effects, research also suggests curcumin may offer potent protection against cancer, and has been shown to enhance conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy.17 These effects have been demonstrated in animal models treating head and neck tumors,18 and in culture of human breast, esophageal and colon cancers.19,20
For example, curcumin appears to reduce side effects of Mitomycin C — a potent antineoplastic drug that can cause kidney and bone marrow damage with long-term use, as well as secondary tumor growth — while simultaneously improving the effectiveness of the drug.21
Patients treated for chronic myeloid leukemia with chemotherapy also had a reduction in cancer growth factor when curcumin was added to the treatment.22 Protection against radiation therapy was demonstrated in a study using breast cancer patients receiving radiation therapy.23 At the end of the study those taking curcumin had less radiation damage to their skin.
In the video above, Dr. William LaValley explains how curcumin affects cancer growth. Tumors typically take years to develop, and the progression of a cell from normal growth to cancer happens through several stages. Deregulation of physiological and mechanical processes that initiate and promote the growth of cancer cells makes use of hundreds of genes and signaling routes, which is why a multitargeted approach is needed for successful prevention and treatment.
Curcumin has been shown to affect multiple cellular targets,24 triggering a variety of actions that affect the growth, replication25 and death of cancer cells. This multifaceted action of curcumin has made it useful in the treatments of several different types of cancer, including colon cancer,26 pancreatic cancer27 and amyloidosis.28
Importantly, curcumin has been shown to activate the apoptosis (cell death) signaling pathway, enabling the cells to die within a natural time span.29 Cancer cells lose the ability to die naturally, which plays a significant role in the hyperproliferation of cells that eventually end up forming into a tumor.
Cancer cells thrive in an inflammatory environment, and curcumin is able to block the pro-inflammatory response at several points, reducing the levels of inflammatory cytokines in your body.30 The anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin have even been shown to match the effect of some drugs.31 Curcumin also helps support your immune system, which is capable of seeking out and destroying early cancer cells naturally.
How to Optimize Absorption of Curcumin
Since curcumin makes up only 3 percent of turmeric's weight, simply cooking with turmeric will not be enough to produce clinical benefits. To achieve the kinds of results found in studies such as the ones mentioned here, you have to use a supplement that has been optimized for bioavailability. Even in its raw form, curcumin has a very poor absorption rate.
As a general rule, only 1 percent of the product will be absorbed by your body; even supplements that have a 95 percent concentration are absorbed at 1 percent. Researchers have investigated a variety of different delivery methods, including oral, intravenous, subcutaneous and intraperitoneal delivery, as well as a variety of formulations, to optimize bioavailability. The following methods were all found to improve the absorption rate of curcumin:32
  • When delivered as a nanoparticle
  • Combined with polylactic-co-glycolic acid
  • Liposomal encapsulation
  • Taken orally with piperine, the active ingredient in black pepper.33 In one study, the addition of piperine increased absorption of curcumin by 2,000 percent34
Anticancer doses typically range between 1,200 and 3,000 grams of bioavailable curcumin extract. Since curcumin is fat-soluble, you might be able to further increase absorption by making a microemulsion. Simply combine 1 tablespoon of curcumin powder with one or two egg yolks and 1 to 2 teaspoons of melted coconut oil, then use a hand blender on high speed to emulsify the powder.
Absorption may also be increased through boiling. Add 1 tablespoon into a quart of water that is already boiling. (If you add it to room temperature water and then boil, it doesn't work as well.) After boiling it for 10 minutes, you will have created a 12 percent solution. Drink once it has sufficiently cooled.
The curcumin will gradually fall out of the solution over time and in about six hours it will be a 6 percent solution, so it is best to drink the water within four hours. However it is far easier and more convenient to obtain curcumin that has already been modified to be more available, such as microactive curcumin.
Curcumin May Be a Valuable Supplement for the Prevention of Many Chronic Ailments
Researchers have demonstrated curcumin may affect more than 100 different cellular pathways, thereby helping prevent and/or treat a number of chronic diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and cancer. By quenching inflammation, curcumin definitely has great medicinal potential.
In addition to being a potent antioxidant in its own right,35 curcumin also boosts the function of your body's own antioxidant enzymes.36 Some studies suggest it may even work as well as some anti-inflammatory medications to treat arthritic conditions.37
Several studies have demonstrated an impact on transcription factors and signaling pathways, and have reviewed the molecular mechanisms curcumin uses to regulate and modulate gene expression.38,39,40 Overall, curcumin is powerful, cost-effective and has a low toxicity profile.41 As such, it may be a valuable supplement for many — especially for the aging population, which has not only heart disease and cancer to contend with, but also the looming threat of dementia.
For younger people, curcumin's beneficial impact on pathways that help reverse insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and obesity42 are well worth noting. In all, I believe curcumin is one of the more valuable nutritional supplements worthy of consideration for all-around good health, as inflammation drives so many different disease processes. Importantly, its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, thereby lowering inflammation in the brain, may be of particular benefit to a lot of people.

The Health Benefits of Cilantro

Cilantro and coriander are the names used in the United States to describe two different parts of the same plant, Coriandrum sativum. It’s an annual herb, which means it blooms and must be replanted yearly. Cilantro is used to describe the green, citrus-flavored leaves. Coriander is the common name for the plant’s light brown seeds, which are dried and used as a cooking spice. Exactly what you call, or how you use, this amazing plant varies depending on where you live in the world, but its health benefits remain the same. Cilantro can help cleanse the body of toxic metals, it’s an incredible source of antioxidants, it’s loaded with vitamins and minerals, and it has a long history of culinary and therapeutic use.

Cilantro Nutritional Facts
A great source of vitamins and minerals, cilantro should be considered a superfood, or at least a “superherb.” A small amount delivers the full daily value of vitamin A and K and is rich in vitamin C, potassium, and manganese. Cilantro is a great, low-calorie option for those who want to add more nutrients and flavor to their diet. Below is the full nutritional breakdown for 3.5 oz. of raw cilantro leaves.[1]

Cilantro and Toxic Metal Cleansing
Beyond its nutritional benefits, cilantro is a powerful, cleansing agent that specifically targets toxic metals. We are constantly exposed to toxic metals like aluminum, arsenic, and cadmium. Toxic metals tend to accumulate in the endocrine system, muscle tissue, and even deep within the bones. Once these metals reach dangerous levels, many serious health problems occur. Common side effects of toxic metal exposure include hormone imbalance, oxidative stress from free radicals, and, in extreme cases, impaired organ function. Don’t wait to experience harsh side effects before cleansing your body.
blog_the_health_benefits_of_cilantro_1

Mercury, for example, can have a devastating effect on your health. Many people who suffer from mercury exposure report feeling more clear headed after consuming large amounts of cilantro over an extended period.[2]
Exposure to lead is also far more common than many people realize and has many adverse effects on the body. In animal studies, cilantro has been observed to protect against lead-induced oxidative stress.[3]
Cilantro helps cleanse the body of toxic metals by supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes. Compounds in cilantro leaf bind to toxic metals and loosen them from affected tissue. This process allows metals to be released from the body naturally. You can access these benefits by consuming the raw leaves or ingesting concentrated extracts. Unfortunately, fresh cilantro goes bad very quickly. If you want to be sure to always have access to its detoxification power, supplements may be a good alternative. Supplements are an excellent choice when fresh cilantro isn’t available or if you find its taste unpalatable. I recommend Global Healing Center’s own Zeotrex™. Zeotrex is a blend of powerful herbs, including cilantro, which help promote overall health by encouraging detoxification of harmful chemicals and toxic metals. On that note, it’s a good time to mention that not everyone appreciates the distinctive flavor of cilantro. One explanation for the difference in flavor perception is the absence of a particular gene called OR6A2. The lack of this gene seems to be common in those who report a foul taste.
Additional Benefits of Cilantro
Antioxidant Support
Cilantro has strong antioxidant activity.[4]
Promotes Heart Health
Cilantro may help prevent cardiovascular damage.[5]
Provides a Mood Boost
Cilantro has been shown to promote calm feelings.[6]
Promotes Normal Blood Sugar Levels
Some studies report that cilantro encourages normal blood sugar levels.[7]
Supports Restful Sleep
Cilantro may help improve sleep quality.[8]
Supports Healthy Cells
Coriander seed oil possesses antioxidant properties that may reduce oxidative stress.[9]
Encourages Fungal Balance
Research conducted by The Dental School of Piracicaba in Brazil reported that cilantro oil has potential against an oral form of the candida fungus.[10]
Fights Harmful Organisms
Cilantro has demonstrated neutralizing activity against several types of harmful organisms.[11, 12]
Encourages Brain Health
Cilantro may help support neurological health by discouraging oxidative stress.[13]
Promotes Normal Fluid Balance
Coriander seed encourages normal fluid balance and urine flow.[14]
Supports Bone Health
Vitamin K supports healthy bones, and eating even a small amount of cilantro provides the recommended daily serving of vitamin K.
Nutritional Support for Eye Health
Cilantro contains nutrients, including vitamin A, which support eye health.
Natural Food Preservative
Cilantro leaves and coriander seed are used to produce essential oils that act as natural food preservatives.[15]
Digestive Support
James A. Duke, Ph.D., a former botanist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and author of “The CRC Handbook of Medicinal Herbs,” has praised cilantro for the way it supports the digestive system. He recommends drinking tea made from the leaves for any form of stomach discomfort. Additionally, cilantro may encourage normal bowel movements.[16]

Tips for Growing Cilantro
Cilantro is easy to grow, and it’s convenient to have fresh cilantro ready to use. Cilantro grows quickly and does not always transfer well, so plan on growing your cilantro from seed. Cilantro leaves stop growing and become bitter after the plant flowers. That is why it’s best to plant your cilantro in spring and fall, avoiding the longer, hotter summer days in-between.
Plant cilantro seeds in well-drained, well-fertilized soil. Choose a spot that gets full sun. Sow several seeds together one-quarter inch into the soil and six to eight inches apart. Water after planting and when the soil is dry to the touch.
Expect to wait three to four weeks before harvesting the cilantro leaves. Leaves can be harvested anytime during the growing process, but you should wait until the plant is at least six inches in height. If you want to harvest the leaves continually, sow new seeds every two to three weeks. Unlike other herbs, cilantro leaves lose most of their flavor when dried, so it’s better to use them fresh. If you need to preserve them, freezing is the best option. The seeds of the cilantro plant—coriander—require a different approach. The seeds can be used for planting or can be dried and used in a culinary capacity. Wait to harvest the seeds until most have turned brown on the plant. Cut off the stalk a few inches below the seeds. Tie the stalks in bunches and hang them upside down in a brown paper bag. After about five days, the dried seeds should fall from the stalks into the bottom of the bag. You can store the seeds in an airtight, glass container for up to a year. To release the flavors, dry-roast or grind before use.
How to Use Your Cilantro
Cilantro has been used in a variety of ways throughout recorded history. Ancient Greeks used cilantro essential oil as a component of perfume. During medieval times, the Romans used cilantro to mask the smell of rotten meat. Cilantro was also one of the first herbs to come to North America from the British colonies back in 1670. Today, cilantro leaves and coriander seeds are used in many types of cuisine.
The popularity of cilantro is owed to its fantastic flavor and versatility. For those who love cilantro, the possibilities are endless. From salsa and soup to meat or vegan curry, cilantro is a delicious ingredient, garnish, and flavor enhancer. For healthy, vegan recipes with cilantro, check out our organic guacamole or Indian-inspired green lentil salad with spiced carrots.

7 Simple Ways to Unclog Your Arteries Naturally

Posted on: Monday, June 23rd 2014 at 5:15 pm
Written By: Sayer Ji, Founder
This article is copyrighted by GreenMedInfo LLC, 2014

We all want to live a long life, but did you know eating these simple foods has been proven scientifically to prevent and in some cases reverse the #1 cause of death in the modern world?
Statistically, atherosclerosis (the progressive clogging of the arteries) is the #1 killer on the planet.  A complex process, involving autoimmunity, infection, dietary incompatibilities, and many known and unknown factors, it is – despite conventional medical opinion – entirely preventable, and in some cases reversible.
Here is the peer-reviewed, published research proving the fact:
  • B Vitamins – yes, something as simple as adding a source of B-complex to your regimen can prevent the juggernaut of heart disease from taking your life prematurely. A doubled-blind, randomized study, published in 2005, in the journal Atherosclerosis found that a simple intervention using 2.5 mg folic acid, 25 mg Vitamin B6, and 0.5mg Vitamin B12 for 1 year, resulted in significant reductions in arterial thickness (as measured by intima media thickeness).[1] Even niacin[2]-[3]or folic acid[4]-[5] alone has been show to have this effect in patients. [Note: Always opt for natural sources of the B-group vitamins, including probiotic supplementation (which produce the entire complement for you), or a whole food extract, versus synthetic or semi-synthetic vitamins which, sadly, predominate on the market today].
  • Garlic – as we have documented extensively previously, garlic can save your life. It has been found to regress plaque buildup in the arteries, among many other potentially life-saving health benefits.[6]
  • Pomegranate – this super healing fruit has been found to regress plaque buildup in the arteries,[7]-[8] as well as being demonstrated to provide dozens of validated health benefits, including replacing the function of the mammalian ovary!
  • Fermented CabbageKimchi, a Korean recipe, which includes fermented cabbage, hot pepper, and various other ingredients, including fermented fish, appears to stall the atherosclerotic process in the animal model.[9] Additionally, strains of good bacteria in kimchi have been found capable of degrading toxic chemicals that can additional bodily harm.
  • L-Arginine: This amino acid is capable of preventing arterial thickening – up to 24% reduction! -- in the animal model.[10]-[11]We have done an extensive literature review on arginine supplementation and have found that in over 30 studies demonstrating this fact addition to 150 known health benefits, it is capable of addressing the underlying dysfunction associated with cardiovascular disease: endothelial dysfunction, with no less than 20 studies proving this fact.
  • Turmeric (curcumin): the primary polyphenol in the Indian spice turmeric known as curcumin has been found to be an excellent cardioprotective, with over 30 studies demonstrating this fact. One study found that curcumin prevented damage to the arteries associated with blockage (neointima formation).[12]
  • Sesame Seed: probably one of the most underappreciated super foods on the planet, sesame seed, which we have shown is as effective as Tylenol for arthritic pain, may be an excellent cardioprotective substance, ideally suited for preventing the progression of atherosclerosis. One animal study found it was capable of preventing atherosclerosis lesion formation.[13]
This is a small sample of evidence-based natural interventions for cardiovascular disease prevention and/or regression. We have a much larger set of studies on over 200 natural substances capable of reducing the risk of heart attack and related heart disease related conditions.
Remember, heart disease is not a natural process, that we must accept as inevitable based on family history of an outdated gene-based model of human disease risk. Our daily decisions, especially regarding what we decide we are going to eat or do not eat, are first and foremost. We can use food as medicine, sloughing off the pharmaceutical industry meme that we need statins to stave off the 'inevitable.' Take back control of your health with nutrition, and realize that food is the only medicine that will both nourish us and heal our bodies in a way that will produce lasting health.

Come check out how the new space feels, and enjoy our new home.
