VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS FOR A VIBRANT AND HEALTHY PREGNANCY PART 2: Supplement Recommendations
by admin @ Dr. Briana Peddle BSc. ND
Wed May 11 10:13:15 PDT 2016
Safe and effective supplement choices in pregnancy are so important so that mom and the growing baby get all the nutrients they need. In Part 1 of this post I discussed how to choose good quality supplements. In Part 2 I will now discuss my first few supplement recommendations for a healthy and vibrant pregnancy. Prenatal Vitamin Prenatal Vitamins provide a well-rounded source of vitamins and minerals. I recommend choosing a prenatal with the active form of vitamins. A great example of this is folic acid. Folate, or 5-methyl folate (5MTHF) is the active form of folic acid. It is important to have this form because a significant portion of the population have a genetic mutation of the MTHFR gene that prevents them from metabolizing folic acid and other vitamins, which could lead to deficiencies and conditions like cleft lip or palate, spina bifida or a host of many other chronic conditions. I’ll talk more about this MTHFR mutation in a future blog post. It is also important to choose a prenatal that is free of dyes, binders and fillers (ie ensuring that short non-medicinal ingredients I talked about in Part 1). I also recommend avoiding 1-A-Day type vitamins as the body can only absorb so much at a time and there is a bigger chance that the digestive tract may struggle to break down the tablet. I recommend a Professional Grade product like Thorne Basic Prenatal. Fish Oils Fish oils are a rich source of EPA and DHA. These are essential fatty acids that serve MANY functions such as a) reducing inflammation: think tissue healing post-labour and delivery b) promoting healthy neurological development in the baby: the brain and nervous system are largely made of fat c) supporting mom’s brain: did you know that a pregnant woman’s brain can shrink by 1% during pregnancy (don’t worry, it returns to normal after birth). “Pregnancy brain”, followed by “baby brain” is real! During pregnancy I recommend having a higher proportion of DHA to EPA because DHA is preferentially used to support nervous system and brain development, whereas EPA is preferentially […]

Can Chiropractors Turn Breech Babies?

It is important to define these terms, as their very names mislead and confuse. Organic: “Not everything it’s cracked up to be.” This label merely states that the

Glucosamine is a naturally occuring chemical produced by our bodies. It is in the fluids around our joints, and helps create the other chemicals that build ligaments, tendon, and cartilage. Hormone imbalances can affect women of all ages, not just women approaching menopause. This is why taking a proactive approach to health, including hormone health is so important. Before we can address balancing hormones, let’s look at 3 of the more common hormone imbalances and their associated symptoms. Keep in mind that these represent just a fraction of the hormones that are evaluated when assessing for hormonal imbalances. Estrogen Dominance: This is something that I see often in my patients. Exogenous sources of estrogens like the birth control pill, as well as xenoestrogens (chemicals which are able to mimic estrogens in our bodies) are common in today’s environment. Things like pesticides, plastics, cosmetics and even soy act as xenoestrogens. A progesterone deficiency typically accompanies estrogen dominance. Conditions associated with estrogen dominance include endometriosis, fibroids, breast cancer and ovarian cysts. Symptoms of estrogen dominance can include cyclical migraines, irregular and/or heavy periods, mood swings and breast tenderness. Low Estrogen: This is more typically seen leading up to and after menopause. Symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, recurring urinary tract infections, vaginal dryness and depression. Low Progesterone: I see women with low progesterone in my practice almost every day. Symptoms of low progesterone can include PMS, irregular menstrual cycles, spotting before your period, insomnia, mood swings and anxiety. Progesterone deficiency is seen in menstruating women as well as in peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women. There are several ways to assess for hormonal imbalance including clinical symptoms, using blood tests, saliva tests or urine tests. My preference is to use saliva if a smaller number of hormones need to be […]

Bringing an End to the Cold and Flu Season
by admin @ Dr. Briana Peddle BSc. ND
Thu Jan 29 14:27:50 PST 2015
You’ve made it through the holidays (Happy New Year!), hopefully without falling victim to the nasty cold and flu bugs that were going around. But the CDC is reporting that another spike in flu cases is on the way and that the flu vaccine is not well matched to the viral strains circulating this year. Good thing you know that there are so many more important health saving measures you can take, other than the vaccine! Here are my Top 5 Ways to Beat the Flu and come out on top this year: 1) Wash your hands often with warm water and soap and skip the hand sanitizer. The friction from washing your hands, in combination with the warm soapy water does all you need to kill off the cold and flu bugs. Alcohol based hand sanitizers are very drying and can damage the integrity of your skin, which is your first line of defense against the cold and flu viruses. I wash my hands before I eat anything, every time I enter the house/work, and between patients. Finding a great natural moisturizer like coconut oil helps keep your skin hydrated. 2) Drink at least 8 cups of water/day. Proper hydration keeps your mucus membranes moist and flushes out your system. Plain water, herbal decaf tea and smoothies all count towards your fluid intake. Avoid juice and pop as these are high in sugar and can suppress your immune system and provide food for viruses. Limit caffeinated beverages like coffee, black tea and green tea as these are diuretics and can be dehydrating. 3) Focus your diet on vegetables (can be fresh or frozen) and lean proteins. Vegetables are high in antioxidants which boost your immune system. Try to include a wide variety of colourful vegetables. Choose clean proteins like wild salmon, turkey, legumes and chicken to support a healthy immune system. For bonus points, try making your own bone broth from beef or chicken/turkey bones plus vegetables like onion and garlic- this is GREAT for fuel your immune system. Find a recipe here: http://www.drfranklipman.com/5-reasons-to-add-bone-broth-to-your-diet/ 4) Have an Immune Boosting Injection. I suggest having this […]

Dear Magie,
So sorry about your husband. It certainly is hard to explain to people!!! I also have people telling me to "get out more"!
My sister has a very bad condition of EM with extra complications. She moved to a wheel chair many years ago and gets herself to the swimming pool a lot. She is lucky that the pool she goes to has minimal chlorine and is salt water mainly. She mainly does treading water in the deep end and is now up to spending over an hour in the pool. We lived in Australia many years and will always love your country. I have also the EM very clearly last summer and fall. I am going through a great period right now where I think it is clearning up. I am doing many things to help. Deep breathing excercises (pranayama Yoga). I am eating all evening meals vegetarian with legumes and mainly animal proteins at lunch. I am trying to eat several forms of probiotics, a capsule, soya yogurt and will soon try another. My big problems started 7 yrs ago when I had a terrible sinusitus and this required several months of antibiotic treatment!!!. I did not know at the time that I was supposed to re establish a healthy stomach flora (known as your immune system). Since then my feet and other problems got worse and worse. Plantar facciitis turned into EM plus more...
Recently I found a doctor willing to do deeper tests and I showed her the photos of my feet and the EM photos from this site. Here in France she is a general practictioner doing homeopathy. In any case I had some immune systeme blood work she ordered for me that was not covered by insurance but showed high levels in my blood of dangerous bacterias (mononucleosis, past, and micoplasma pulmonary) and not enough of good bacteria. I am taking her prescritions methodically and no longer have pain keeping me up until 5 am and I am no longer taking pain killers. I am still hot in my feet but not as intense. I am also following the advice of a shiatsu practitioner and doing a helbal treatment to repair nerve tissues.
I know this is a lot of changes for most people but please give it a try. It will take 3 months to see results and must be continued for a while. The pain killers can be eased off later as you get more confidence.
I hope this helps some what and thanks for posting!!

Prolotherapy has been used for roughly a hundred years, and was formally described and systematized by a surgeon in the 1950’s. Prolotherapy has […]

By Dr Jyoti Mistry and Dr Lucas MacMillan Curcumin appears to have a number of positive effects relating to the heart and blood vessels. For example, HDL (the “good” kind of cholesterol) appears to improve in both quantity and quality with curcumin intake. (Ganjali et al., 2017). Further to this, curcumin works to improve antioxidant […]

VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS FOR A VIBRANT AND HEALTHY PREGNANCY PART 3: Supplement Recommendations and Alternatives for Smaller Budgets
by admin @ Dr. Briana Peddle BSc. ND
Wed May 11 10:16:10 PDT 2016
In Parts 1 and 2 I discussed how to choose a good quality supplement and three of the most important supplements to take during pregnancy: a prenatal vitamin, fish oils and probiotics. Here I will discuss my last 2 supplements for pregnancy recommendations and where to focus if money is tight. Calcium Magnesium I recommend that pregnant women start taking a liquid CalMag before bed in their 2nd trimester. The second trimester is when baby’s bones start to develop, and the baby gets first dibs on mom’s nutrients. This means that if it’s not getting enough calcium and magnesium that these minerals will actually be pulled from mom’s bones in order to supply enough for baby. Calcium and Magnesium are also necessary for proper contraction and relaxation of muscles, making it a great supplement to help support the work of the uterus. I recommend a liquid because it is more easily absorbed than a tablet or capsule. I recommend taking it before bed because it can help with sleep and leg cramps that many women start to experience in their 2nd trimester. It is common for supplement makers to “cheap out” on calcium supplements by using the cheapest form (calcium carbonate). Unfortunately, this form isn’t well absorbed by the body. It is ok for calcium carbonate to be one of the forms found in the supplement, but there should be other forms as well (preferably calcium citrate). I recommend a professional grade product like Cytomatrix Cal-Mag +1000IU Vit D3 Liquid. Health store brands like Calcium and Magnesium Citrate by SISU (I like the blueberry flavour) are acceptable. Vitamin D It seems as though a new benefit from optimal vitamin D levels is discovered every day! Vitamin D helps maintain healthy immune function, mood, bone health and more. Studies have shown that women who take “high” doses of vitamin D during pregnancy reduce their risk of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, infection and pre term birth. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which means that it is best absorbed if it is emulsified (my preference is a liquid vitamin D as opposed […]

Weight Loss 101: Mind-Body Connection
by admin @ Dr. Briana Peddle BSc. ND
Wed May 21 07:16:34 PDT 2014
Weight loss should be easy, right? We are told that if we burn more calories than we take in, exercise several times per week and eliminate junk food and sugar that the pounds should just melt away. So why is it never that easy? It is because making change takes so much more than just gathering information. This is why working with your ND is the best way to lose weight- because we take the time to get to know you and to understand what makes you tick so that we can support you from every angle IN ADDITION to giving all the information that you need for a successful weight loss program. Here are 7 simple steps (in order of importance!) to get you started on your weight loss journey: 1) Identify and Address Physical Barriers to Weight Loss Have basic lab work run to determine if there are any barriers like poor thyroid function, hormonal imbalances, poor blood sugar control or food sensitivities. These barriers can contribute to slow metabolism, inflammation, water retention, increased cravings and poor detoxification. 2) Identify and Address Emotional Barriers to Weight Loss Ask yourself, how did you get to where you are now? What isn’t working for you in your life? How are you not fulfilled in your life? Do you have effective stress management skills? Do you have a creative outlet? Who is your support system? What is your motivation for change? True change can only come when you know that you MUST change, not that you SHOULD change (check out Anthony Robbins’ work for more information about making lasting change). 3) Re-define Markers of Success Weight loss is a welcomed side effect to achieving better health. Tracking changes on the scale can be motivational for some, but is not a mandatory marker of success. Here are some other markers to consider: Waist: Hip ratio Cholesterol levels Blood sugar levels Hormone levels Energy Mood How your clothes are fitting 4) Establish Healthy Sleep Patterns Sleep is where the body regenerates itself. It is also when many hormones are […]

Regardless of how the loss of cartilage and bone occurred, the symptoms of pain and stiffness, […]

Digestion and the Ageing Process
by admin @ Dr. Briana Peddle BSc. ND
Thu May 01 12:44:07 PDT 2014
Originally posted on March 31st, 2014 at Semperviva Yoga This month’s blog question from a Sun Studio Semperviva yogi is about how ageing affects the digestive tract. There are a number of anatomical and physiological changes in the digestive tract of an older adult. Today I will discuss a few of these changes and offer tips to help combat the effects of the ageing digestive tract. The Esophagus, the Stomach and the Small Intestine Ageing: With age, the strength of the lower esophageal sphincter (or LES, the valve that connects the bottom of your esophagus to your stomach) decreases, as does the amount of stomach acid produced. This is an excellent recipe for acid reflux and explains why close to 30% of adults over the age of 50 experience acid reflux. There is a common misconception that acid reflux is caused by too much stomach acid when in reality it is more common for the cause to be low stomach acid. This is because during digestion, the rising stomach acid signals the LES to close. If stomach acid is too low, then the LES doesn’t close properly and allows stomach contents and acid to splash up and irritate the esophagus causing heart burn. Mature adults also tend to be taking multiple medications, many of which can weaken the LES. These include nitrates, calcium channel blockers, benzodiazepines, anticholinergic agents, and antidepressants. As we age, lactase levels in the small intestine decrease, leading to dairy intolerance. There may also be an overgrowth of bacteria that can cause gas, bloating and bowel habit changes. The small intestine also becomes less able to absorb nutrients such as B12, Iron, Calcium and Vitamin D. Tip #1: Apple cider vinegar is a great digestive aid: 1 tbsp in a cup of warm water 15 minutes before meals. The bitter taste and acidity stimulate the release of saliva, stomach acid and enzymes to help optimize digestion and increase absorption of minerals in your food. Tip #2: Avoid foods that weaken the esophageal sphincter like peppermint, coffee, chocolate, onions and alcohol. Tip #3: Consider taking a probiotic or […]

Musings for a Monday night

I have too many busy thoughts to keep updating my status on facebook every hour.
Five and six years ago when I would feel this way, I'd write a blog post, so why not now?
Maybe you will engage with me and comment on the following:
* I am living this strange life where I am learning and doing and learning and doing, and sometimes it seems that I am triping over myself.
* To that end, I go on facebook and see what all my nutrition/health/food people are doing and my thoughts range from inspiration to jealousy. The thing is, as I am trying to undertake the most challenging undergrad program I know of, I simply don't have the same time and energy that I did in my non-student life.
* My old therapist told me that a person can only really do two things well at a time and feel good about it. I think this is true. I can be a midwifery student, write a cookbook, promote myself as a cookbook author, develop a relationship, study Non-Violent Communication, heal myself physically/mentally/emotionally, develop and maintain a regular and frequent yoga and/or meditation practice, sew a new quilt, finish an older quilt, become an expert at herbal healing in pregnancy, find a way to have an income... but I can't manage them all at once to a satisfying degree. I am doing one of these things actively, given that I'm well into the academic semester, and the other... well, it's more of a tie between a few focuses (foci?) and it's really no surprise that I'm not getting a great sense of satisfaction. I need to get on this.
* Here are the questions tho: 1) How do I pick that 2nd place to focus? 2) Can I let some of the other interests and to-dos go until the school semester ends in May? 3) Can you be income-less and still wish for a personal assistant?
Now here's a non sequitur:
* Are you watching Portlandia? Are you thinking, if you haven't yet, that maybe you ought to? If you are from Portland or living there right now I especially want to hear what you think of it.
Please, do decide to engage with me. It'll save me from watching bad tv in order to keep my city girl brain active while I'm living this small town life.
