Scientists Believe These Natural Substances Could Reduce Depression

by Angela Vuckovic @ RateMDs Health News

Since this is a condition that annually affects circa 16 million individuals across the United States, there is an urgent need for new treatments for depression. Compounds found in grape seeds could offer an answer. Currently available pharmacological treatments for depression and anxiety produce results that are far from ideal. It is estimated that these drugs lead to temporary remission in less than 50 percent of the cases, and, usually, come with a set of severe side-effects. These disheartening statistics, as well as the fact that this condition affects so many people, are a neverending motivation for scientists to try

It seems that omega-3 in supplements doesn’t pack the same punch as the essential fatty acids found in fish. Fish oil is one of the most commonly used supplements: millions of people consume it daily in the form of softgels, capsules, or tablets, believing that it will lower their risk of developing cardiovascular issues. Even the American Heart Association advises people with a history of heart conditions to supplement omega-3 in their diets. But a new study by British scientists reveals that, sadly, these supplements have very little to do with your heart’s health. Up until now, doctors advised anyone

Study: A Glass of Wine A Day Keeps Brain Diseases Away

by Angela Vuckovic @ RateMDs Health News

A new scientific study shows that drinking low doses of alcohol can help your brain clear away toxins linked to serious diseases, like dementia and Alzheimer’s. It seems that “everything in moderation” rule works: at least when it comes to booze. If you like to unwind with a glass of Cabernet and a good book after work, you might be, inadvertently, improving your brain’s health. How’s that for serendipity? A team of researchers from the University of Rochester’s Center for Translational Neuromedicine recently revealed the results of their study that brings new findings about the way alcohol impacts our brains.

Here’s how changing your diet could alter your life, by looking to the past. The first week of February marks African Heritage and Health Week, annually across the United States. The celebration makes for a great way to kick off Black History Month, which happens throughout the second month of the year annually and celebrates the achievements and accomplishments of African Americans throughout history. It’s the perfect time to broaden your knowledge and be inspired. And one of my favorite ways of doing this is through a good meal. But what to eat? To date, I have a limited, maybe

Are You Getting Enough Vitamin A and Vitamin D? This is Why It Matters

by Alex Kozovski @ RateMDs Health News

A diet that’s limited in vitamin A and vitamin D exposes the body to a variety of potential health issues in the future. According to Statistics Canada, these nutrients are two of the top three – the other being calcium – that Canadians lack the most, with vitamin D the front runner. And while a dearth of these essential nutrients don’t guarantee or automatically point to health deficiencies and complications down the road, it leaves the door open for them. So just what makes vitamin A and vitamin D so essential to our bodies? Registered dietitian Andrea D’Ambrosio breaks down

Effect of milk fermented with a Lactobacillus helveticus R389(+) proteolytic strain on the immune system and on the growth of 4T1 breast cancer cells in mice | FEMS Immunology & Medical Microbiology | Oxford Academic

OUP Academic

Previous studies on a murine model have demonstrated that the administration of Lactobacillus helveticus and Lactobacillus casei inhibits the development of fibrosarcoma and colon carcinoma, respectively. The aim of this work was to study the beneficial effects of the consumption of milk fermented by L. helveticus on a murine model for mammary carcinoma. Female BALB/c mice were challenged by a single subcutaneous injection of tumoral cells (American Type Culture Collection 4T1) in the left mammary gland. Prior to tumour injection, mice were fed for two, five or seven consecutive days with fermented milk. The following factors were monitored for 2 months: rate of tumour development, histological studies, apoptosis, phagocytic index, peritoneal macrophages, determination of β-glucuronidase enzyme in peritoneal macrophages, determination of γ-interferon (INFγ) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in blood serum, determination of CD4+, CD8+, interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10, TNF-α and INFγ by immunoperoxidase, and measurement of β-glucuronidase activity in intestinal fluid. The administration of L. helveticus delayed the development of the tumour in all cases, a 2- or 7-day feeding period being most effective. This work demonstrates that milk fermented with L. helveticus decreases the growth rate of mammary tumours. The effect was mediated by increased apoptosis and decreased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, in particular IL-6, implicated in oestrogen synthesis.
