Xiringuito Escriba, Barcelona – Beachfront Paella

by Foodnut.com @ Foodnut.com

Xiringuito Escriba is a beachfront paella restaurant that several people recommended to us. The Yelp reviews are not good, so we were worried. To its credit, the restaurant was pretty full by 8pm, while others nearby where not. The posted hours show that it opens at 7pm, but we found people eating there before this. (No doubt foreigners like us!) Any restaurant that has such a good view is always red flagged by us. Can’t beat the beach view and people watching.. In the end, the paella was very good, service was not great but the servers were friendly. Menu: was in English and mid sized with lots of starters, many paellas, and several other dishes. Service: was not great, we had to flag people down to order, get the bill. We did finally get someone that was friendly. They speak enough English to take care of you. Verdict:  Food was very good but you can find far less touristy spots with better food.  Try Somostrro Food Picks: Complimentary olives Sangria 3/4 de cava (16e) was very friuit with mint and ice in it. A great value and perfect drink on a hot day. L’amanida del Xiringu salad (13e) was […]

San Sebastian, Spain Pintxos Reviews

by Foodnut.com @ Foodnut.com

We visited San Sebastian (Donostia), Spain in 2017 and have some reviews for more casual restaurants in this review. If you are a foodie, you definitely need to visit this beautiful area. Also checkout our reviews of legendary gastronomy temples: Arzak Martín Berasategui What are Pintxos? San Sebastian is notorious for this fun way to eat! Think of it as a buffet spread that you can pick from. Pintxos are small snacks eaten in bars or taverns. One of the ‘novelties’ of pintxos is that you don’t order, you take it from the counter. It’s a bit of fun to order wine or beer and just start nibbling at what you see on the bar. You then normally just tell them at the end how many you’ve had and the barman will charge you accordingly. Some use toothpicks to tally the bill. A typical snack of the Basque Country, “pinchos” consist of small slices of bread upon which an ingredient or mixture of ingredients is placed and fastened with a toothpick, which gives the food its name “pincho”, meaning “spike.” Places to get Pintxos and other food in San Sebastian   atari gastroteka Calle Mayor, 18 20013 San Sebastián Guipúzcoa, Spain TripAdvisor 4.5 out of 5 […]

Bodega 1900, Barcelona

by Foodnut.com @ Foodnut.com

Rated 4.5 on Trip Advisor Bodega 1900 is part of the hot Albert Adria’s group of restaurants, across the street from his legendary restaurant Tickets. (We dined at Tickets a couple days later) It focuses on creating a place were friends meet for a drink and small tapas. This is not a large restaurant and has sidewalk tables, a front room with 3 tables and chef cooking stations, plus a back area. They have a prix fix menu plus a la carte. We had more fun and saved money ordering on our own. Reserve well ahead of time, we saw many people turned away at the door without reservations. Menu: Changes from time to time and includes a chalk board with today’s specials. There are a good number of starters and small plates. Most are in the seafood or cured meats space. Service: The waitress was very helpful. She assisted us in navigating the menu and ordering the top dishes. Her English was just fine. Food Picks: Olives – Gordal and Piparra Oliva-S (1.90e) is a fun must get dish here. They are converted to a gelatinous mound which you put on your tongue to burst in your mouth. Percebes […]

Arzak Review, San Sebastian, Spain

by Foodnut.com @ Foodnut.com

Some call this place the Best in the world! San Sebastian is teeming with Michelin Stars, some of the higher number in one area.  We chose two 3 star restaurants for our trip, Arzak and Martín Berasategui. This was primarily driven from research and recommendations from others.  Mugaritz was one 3 star restaurant that many people discouraged us from dining at. Arzak is a legendary 3 Michelin star foodie outpost run by a Father – Daughter team.  Just outside of San Sebastian, about 10 minutes from city center.  Elena Arzak was very cordial, welcoming us during the meal and said goodbye as we were leaving. Keep in mind: you need to reserve well in advance and probably build your plans around the booking! Decor More on the modern side with lots of abstract pictures and glasses in the dining rooms. The restaurant was clearly filled with well-heeled foodies and wine fans. We did not have enough time for the tasting menu, instead we opted for 3-4 half sided courses.  These do come with several Amuse Bouches and a round of Petit Fours. The food at Arzak was definitely deserving of 3 stars.  The food was innovative, cooked well, and […]

Una Pizza Napoletana, San Francisco

by Foodnut.com @ Foodnut.com

They are moving back to NYC and closing 12/30/2017! They will be missed. Long lines before they even opened. Una Pizza Napoletana is a new legendary pizza place in San Francisco’s Soma District. Pizzaiolo Anthony Mangieri closed up his New York shop last year and headed westward with his wife to open this restaurant in 2010, aka shrine to pizza making. Our last visit was in December 2017. Be sure to read our review of Pizzeria Starita and Da Michele in Naples Italy. The real deal. Starita has an outpost in NYC. All pizzas are 12 inch round and not pre-sliced. They feature 100% handmade Neapolitan pizza, from a wood-fired brick oven baked that dominates the room. This is Magnieri’s passion and it shows. Naturally Leavened, no condiments available, no substitutions, no alterations, just a salt shaker on the table. The dough takes 3 days work. Get what you get and you don’t make a fit. They close when he runs out of dough, usually about 930pm. Our last visit was in late 2017 right before they closed. Would you believe that Magnieri is allergic to flour? He has to take care as flour is one of his staples. Cuisine – […]

Montesacro Pinseria-Enoteca, San Francisco

by Foodnut.com @ Foodnut.com

Why did we dine here? – Montesacro is a hidden Italian gem, located in an alley right off a hardcore scary block of 6th Street in downtown San Francisco. The name comes from a neighborhood in Roma. We were tipped off about this place from a friend. Gianluca Legrottaglie, who runs nearby 54 Mint, opened this stylish restaurant, that transports you back to Rome, in 2015. Pinsa’s are a flatbread that was once prepared by peasants living outside the imperial walls during the Roman empire. Montesacro is the first “Pinseria” in the United States. It presents a modern take on Pinsa that is made with a blend of rice, soy and wheat flour imported directly from Rome, All GMO-free. Insider Tip – Enter from 7th street, walking down Stevenson. Check out the bathroom Cuisine – Italian Location – Downtown San Francisco Opened – 2015 Service – Montesacro had friendly service that was adequate. They did forget to tell us about dessert. Verdict – Montesacro will transport you back to Rome. A hidden restaurant, that while not cheap, has decent food and is pretty cool. Is this restaurant worth a 5 minute drive? Yes. 30 minute? Yes. 1 Hour? Maybe. Montesacro […]

Martín Berasategui Review, San Sebastian, Spain

by Foodnut.com @ Foodnut.com

One of the Best Meals We’ve ever had! In Lasarte-Oria(Gipuzkoa) about 15 minutes from foodie heaven San Sebastian, Spain, Martín Berasategui has been awarded three Michelin stars since 2001. Most people think about Arzak or Mugaritz, but you need to dine HERE! The chef holds eight stars in total, more than any other Spanish chef with many restaurants around the world.  He has 3 stars at this restaurant, 3 stars in Barcelona at Restaurante Lasarte, and 2 stars in the Canary Islands. Martín Berasategui’s decor was modern, elegant and understated.  The tables are well spaced to give a sense of privacy and decorated with beautiful orchids.  They even have handbag pedestals at each table. You can make reservations online in English.  You confirm the reservations by clicking on a link in email. Really easy! Menu: The Great Tasting Menu is priced pretty reasonably at 225€ for a 3 Michelin star restaurant. Several places are more expensive in the San Francisco area. This changes from time to time, with the menu showing the year that many items were added, an interesting detail we have not seen before. You can order 1/2 portions of the fish courses and meat entrees, very handy because this are […]

Prepare to book months in advance, otherwise you’ll have to pay up for the special Tickets Experience at (250e per person) which includes a prix fixe menu, dessert, and a gift. All in all this fun experience was better than we expected. The food was innovative and unique. A great place for every foodie to visit when in Barcelona. Menu: We could not secure reservations, so we purchased their experience. The menu is pretty wide ranging and is not very expensive surprisingly. Service: Was surprisingly fantastic. They understood English well and took care of our every need. No need to ask for items. Servers are constantly scanning the table, making sure everything is ok. Empty plates are cleared quickly. Food Picks: Mojito (9e) was filled with crushed ice but done well. Strong and hidden potency. Agua Valencia (8e) is a classic Spanish […]

Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers, San Francisco

by Foodnut.com @ Foodnut.com

Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers Post St, San Francisco Best Burger in San Francisco? Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers is a nondescript burger joint using natural beef. You can get buffalo, beef, chicken, turkey, and veggie burgers. They also have hot dogs and salads, but frankly you come here for burgers, fries, shakes, etc. Pearl’s uses Niman ranch meat. They used to have several locations including Pearl’s Phat Burgers in Mill Valley’s, that has since closed.  Our last visit was in the Winter of 2018. Several new regional chains have appeared in San Francisco, Roam Artisan burgers and Super Duper.  We think Pearl’s is not only better, its cheaper! Decor, Vibe – Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers is a small cramped interior, clean. Not a lot of tables.  Families, couples, small groups crowding into the place. Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers Menu pics (Click to zoom in on any picture) Pearls Deluxe Burgers has several different burgers and vary in size and allow customization. They also have specially named burgers that are pre-configured. Pearls Deluxe Burgers Picks: Deluxe Bacon Cheeseburger The half pound Deluxe Burger ($7.49) with bacon and cheddar cheese was of pretty good size. We should order the 1/4 pound Mini burger next time! When our […]
