Josh and Ellen Biemond and their four children have been farming on their family’s organic dairy operation in Iroquois, Ontario, since 2005.
In 1989 Josh’s parents Pieter and Maria eliminated all use of chemicals and transitioned their farm to organic. Ten years later in 1999 they started shipping milk to Organic Meadow. Wanting to raise a family in a lifestyle that supported healthy living and family involvement, Josh and Ellen returned to the family farm in the spring of 2005 to work alongside Josh’s parents.
Josh and Ellen milk approximately 36 cross-bred cows and produce some cash crops. In 2010, they partnered with Josh’s brother Rudi and his partner Jennifer to take over the farm, allowing Pieter and Maria to retire. In addition to their involvement with the Organic Meadow Co-operative, the Biemonds have recently opened Upper Canada Creamery, where they are producing their own organic yogurt.

Ferme Aux Pleines Saveurs
Chantale Vaillancourt and Martin Turcot began producing on Ferme Aux Pleines Saveurs in 2003. This young farm has seen significant growth and development in it’s short life of 12 years! In it’s humble beginnings, Ferme Aux Pleines Saveurs started production with the intention of producing 35 CSA baskets per week. By the end of their first year, they had surpassed this goal and were producing 75 baskets per week. Today, the farm produces for over 320 weekly baskets, as well as local restaurants, markets, and retailers like Ottawa Organics! Chantale and Martin have been very ambitious with on-site projects to improve the farm. They have built an irrigation pond, cold storage facilities, a washing and packing room, and even a greenhouse for starting seedlings and extending the growing season for vegetables. Chantale and Martin live on their farm in St-Andre-Avellin, QC, with their two children, Alexia and Nathaël.

Happy Days Dairy
Happy Days Dairy was founded in 1993 by Donat Koller and his family. Donat grew up in rural Switzerland, and spent his youth farming. After graduating from agricultural college, Donat found work farming in Australia, and eventually returned to Switzerland working on a dairy farm. It was at this farm that he began experimenting with cheese-making, and discovered his passion. He decided to go to cheese-making college, and graduated in 1993. After graduation, he and his wife, Jasmine, immigrated to Canada to pursue Donat’s career in cheese-making. The market for an artisan Swiss cheese-maker was much larger in Canada than in tiny Switzerland, so they decided to make the move, and it turned out to be the right choice for them. They moved to Salmon Arm, BC, and started up their business with a herd of 70 goats. Today, Happy Days Dairy has grown to include other dairy farmers with herds in Salmon Arm, BC, Chilliwack, BC, and Ponoka, AB, and a dairy-processing plant in Chilliwack, BC. Pinehedge Farms is owned and operated by Josef Heinzle in St. Eugene, Ontario, but it’s roots began in Austria. Josef’s father, Anton Heinzle Sr., started a biodynamic farm in a small town in Austria back in 1972. This was Josef’s first exposure to alternative methods of farming, and a passion for continuing this work grew. After farming in Austria for 10 years, Josef’s father decided to emigrate the entire family to Canada, which had been a life-long dream for him. The family relocated to St. Eugene in 1982, and Pinehedge Farms began. Josef went on to study at an agricultural college, graduated in 1988 and gradually began to take over the business. In 1994, Josef started production on Ontario’s first on-farm processing plant!
