Welcome to My Kitchen
by Kyla Gallant-Sova @ Crave Health and Nutrition Inc. - My Kitchen Blog
Tue Sep 06 10:00:26 PDT 2016
Welcome to my kitchen! I am so excited for you to be here! To me, the kitchen is the centre of every home. Growing up it was always a hubbub of activity and excitement, providing nourishment both physical and emotional. In the kitchen is where I learned to make my first ever balanced meal (pork chops in a mushroom sauce with rice and some vegetable I cannot remember, which I think is pretty good for a 12 year old!), and where my family would support me through both my successes and my challenges. To me, the kitchen should be a supportive area in the home, where people are able to open up, try new things, and overcome barriers. That is why I want to open my kitchen up to you!

t the latest evidence regarding the use of these agents in children with AGE in developed countries.Recent findings Single-dose oral ondansetron is effective and safe in reducing hospital admissions and the use of intravenous rehydration in children with AGE in emergency-department-based trials. Ondansetron use has increased significantly; however, ‘real-world’ studies of effectiveness have documented less impressive clinical impacts. Similarly, probiotic consumption is growing rapidly. Although several strains appear to reduce the duration of diarrhea in hospitalized children, current data are insufficient to support the routine use of probiotics in outpatient pediatric AGE.Summary Ondansetron and probiotics may improve patient outcomes in pediatric AGE. Appropriate strategies are needed to optimally integrate oral ondansetron into clinical practice to maximize its potential benefits. Although probiotics remain a promising option, there are challenges in generalizing the data available to patients presenting for outpatient care. GUEST POST - The Pros of Probiotics

Wed May 24 14:51:17 PDT 2017
Hi! I'm Taylor. I am a Nutrition student at the University of Alberta, as well as an aspiring Registered Dietitian! I love cooking up new healthy recipes, or trying new sporting activities such as yoga, kickboxing, or spin classes. I believe that healthy living should be exciting and fun, not something that makes people feel deprived of the good things in life. When you realize that food has the power to improve mental health, enhance your energy, change your mood, and increase your overall happiness, the way you think about the contents of your diet changes and this is something that I aspire to instill in others! The Pros of Probiotics Probiotics are the latest rage in the nutrition world right now, popping up in magazines, books, and the news, but many people do not actually know what they are or how they impact health. When I started to learn about probiotics and their benefits in some of my classes, I decided that I wanted to share the information that I learned with the rest of you as probiotics can have many positive benefits for our health! I also wanted to share some of the yummy probiotic products that I have found.

Using murine colitis models to analyze probiotics–host interactions | FEMS Microbiology Reviews | Oxford Academic
OUP Academic
Probiotics are defined as ‘live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host’. So, to consider a microorganism as a probiotic, a demonstrable beneficial effect on the health host should be shown as well as an adequate defined safety status and the capacity to survive transit through the gastrointestinal tract and to storage conditions. In this review, we present an overview of the murine colitis models currently employed to test the beneficial effect of the probiotic strains as well as an overview of the probiotics already tested. Our aim is to highlight both the importance of the adequate selection of the animal model to test the potential probiotic strains and of the value of the knowledge generated by these in vivo tests.

Maternal perspectives on the use of probiotics in infants: a cross-sectional survey
BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Probiotic products that may modify the intestinal microbiota are becoming increasingly available and known to consumers due to their potential to prevent or treat many pediatric health conditions. As scientific knowledge of the health benefits of probiotics increases, it is important to identify factors that may prevent their successful integration into patient care as well as to ensure effective translation of research findings. The aim of this study was to describe maternal perspectives on probiotics and their use in infants. Mothers with a child aged two years or younger enrolled in the Alberta Pregnancy Outcomes and Nutrition (APrON) study were invited by email to complete a 29 item self-administered web-based questionnaire. A total of 413 mothers of the 1327 contacted completed the questionnaire. The majority (99.3%) of respondents had heard of probiotics and were aware that they contained live bacteria (87.0%); 89.3% had used a product containing probiotics themselves but only 50.8% had given one to their infant. Most mothers indicated they believed that probiotics were beneficial (73.1%) and none thought they were harmful. Over a third of mothers did not feel informed enough to make a decision on whether probiotics were safe to use in infants (36.6%). The study demonstrates that awareness and understanding of probiotics is high among mothers in Alberta, Canada. However, there is still uncertainty regarding the benefit of probiotics as well as safety in infants which could be important factors determining therapeutic use in the future. Further studies that demonstrate beneficial effects and safety of probiotics in healthy infants as well as targeted knowledge translation should help to address these potential concerns.

Winter Salad
by Kyla Gallant-Sova @ Crave Health and Nutrition Inc. - My Kitchen Blog
Sat Sep 24 11:15:07 PDT 2016
I am the first person to admit that I am not a huge salad fan. Yes, even though I am a dietitian, I do not like traditional salads. Raw leafy greens are always super awkward to eat, and all of that chewing takes me FOREVER to finish eating. I do however enjoy what I think of as chunky salads... where the vegetables are in bitesize pieces that I can easily eat without having pieces of spinach sticking out of my mouth. I also thoroughly enjoy fall/winter veggies (think squash, beets, all manners of root veggies). It is starting to get cold outside and I find the warmth of squash, beets, etc comforting. This recipe is a mash-up of chunky, easy-to-eat salad style and comforting, delicious winter vegetables. My favourite thing about this recipe is that it is versatile. I have one version that I create just as a vegetable side for meals, and I have a second version that is more of a main course. Although it does take a good chunk of time to make, it is easy to double the recipe and save the extras for leftovers throughout the week. I hope you enjoy!

Because I set realistic goals that I know I can achieve and I make a plan that involves baby steps that extend past the month of January. Do you want 2017 to be the year that you actually achieve your New Year's resolutions?
