Did so well last week, but my body feels so tired. And I did a complete derail this weekend with my food and drink, which stressed my body out even more. And I got proof if it when I woke up this morning with a big, fat cold sore. AGAIN! 2nd one in a month. Thankfully I've got some Aciclovir tablets and cream to treat it with, but still no fun. Especially not since today, I've got my 3rd interview at one of the companies I'm really interested in working with and on top of it a BodyPump release later on tonight. Anxiety!

Write what you know

by noreply@blogger.com (Carissa) @ my bod, my temple

I went to a corporate communications offsite last week in Vancouver and am just now dusting off the last of the family guilt from being away. Two things getting together with a bunch of professional communicators will do to you:

  1. Inpire you to write more.
  2. Make you feel guilty for not writing enough.
When I was off work for a year, I exercised my word muscle almost every day and it was glorious. It was more than a habit, it was the stuff of survival. Since going back to work my muscle has atrophied.

I write for work, yes, every hour of every day, but the creative process is a little different. And it all makes me feel like not writing anymore when it's late at night and I'm spent. I feel like Jerry's masseuse girlfriend who would rather do anything than rub another god damn back after a day in the parlour. So stop trying to force my hands on your shoulders, dude!

But if you ask me what it is I'm supposed to be doing, it starts and ends with writing. Not because I'm the next Margaret Atwood but because I don't know how to do anything else. I have no other special skills. This vegan thing has me in the kitchen more than ever, but I ain't no natural at it. I'm a slave to the recipe and an idiot at improvising. I'm raising daughters, but by the skin of my teeth. I can run 5k in a pinch, but still hate 75% of the experience and can't seem to make it stick. Not that I could actually make a living out of any of those things if I were half good at them, but at least they involve honing some kind of skill or making use of experience.

So the writing is because I suck at the other 9,999,999 things that humans can do.

Tonight I signed up for a 5-day webinar in December with a woman I've been reading for as long as the intertubes have been around: Penelope Trunk. She'll be teaching me how to find the thing in my life to write about, how not to be boring at it, and how to make money from it. I've read so much of her shizz over the years for free, that the $150 I'm spending on the webinar seems like chump change.

If it gets me nothing else than an excuse to quit work at 6 pm for a few nights, then I'll be golden. And it might just help me figure out what the hell I'm supposed to be writing about for the rest of my life.

It does a body bad

by noreply@blogger.com (Carissa) @ my bod, my temple

The thing I find most interesting about the wellness conversation in general is that most people are quite willing to adopt new things that "studies have shown" have health benefits, like green tea, kale and the gazillion other superfoods touted by all and sundry. But when it comes to really questioning some of the stuff we've been putting in our bods since babies that similar "studies have shown" are detrimental to our health, the willingness to change goes in the toilet.

The culture (or cult) of milk falls squarely into this category. Like cigarettes before it, cow's milk is gaining a bit of a bad rep and it's only a matter of time before it gets really bad, and not just according to the granola circles. But unlike cigarettes, we give the stuff to kids and to speak ill of it is still considered blasphemous, odd or just plain annoying. Most of us have fond memories (from our childhood or from just this morning) of drinking milk, eating yogurt, smothering cheese over every damn thing under the sun. It's tasty. It's calcium. It's just not something you need to mess with, thank you.

But more than meat, more than chemicals on my bod and in my house, more than the running and the guitar playing and the meditating to the Ramones, eliminating dairy consumption from my family is the number one priority. Have I done it completely? Shit, no. It IS hard to get it right out. It's everywhere and although I may not eat it myself anymore, getting it away from my kids has been a brutal challenge.

Other than the fact that we're the only mammals who drink another mammal's milk, here's why milk is messing up our lives:

  • Cow's milk is meant to fatten up calves - it has more than three times as much protein as breast milk
  • Beyond childhood, most of us stop producing lactase which we need to digest lactose
  • The protein in cow's milk is difficult for all humans to digest - most of us can't digest it at all
  • A high animal protein diet, particularly protein containing casein, is linked to cancer, Crohn's, allergies, eczema, asthma and arthritis
The other thing that dairy consumption gives you is mucus. Yeah, I said it. If you get sinus infections or have a regular date with other headcold symptoms every time you get sick, chuck the dairy and see what happens. I've got a man living in my house who's a walking advertisement for tossing the cow.

But where do I get my calcium? Because most of us can't digest milk, we're not getting all that lovely calcium we're promised. Also, there's a problem with us and calcium - it's not necessarily that we don't get enough intake, it's that we don't retain it properly, either because other things in our diets cancel it out (cola and caffeine are big culprits here) or we don't get enough vitamin D, which helps calcium absorption. There are plenty of things that have natural calcium, including dark, leafy greens and beans, and if you can pump a little iron, you're helping your bones and muscles out even more. Non-dairy milk is often calcium fortified, so you're covered there, too, yo!

Okay, okay, I rant. I know I do. We've all lived next to, grown up on or seen pictures of beautiful farms with dairy cows grazing peacefully in the meadow. Two things on that little image: the multi-billion dollar dairy industry and its agenda, and growth hormones. See where that cigarettes = dairy thing lines up on part one? And if you're happy getting an extra shot of hormones in your morning cereal, fill your boots. If you're happy with this additive, but are dead set against changing your milky ways, at least consider organic.

If you're ready to ditch the milk mustache, coconut, rice, hemp or almond milk are peachy keen. You can learn to live with black coffee. I know it's hard. I still have a block of parmesan in my fridge. I still buy yogurt for kids' lunches and give them ice cream for a treat. But we've switched to almond milk for everyone, Tofutti cream cheese for the girls, and I'm still experimenting with soy and coconut yogurt. The fake cheeses are atrocious, so don't waste your money.

I know it's everywhere, in everything and on every bloody food surface. But you won't regret weaning yourself.

TODAYS' NEWS: PETTY THIEF GETS ATTACKED BY RAGING SWEDISH GIRL

by noreply@blogger.com (Jax) @ Jeacline

I got robbed today! Yes, proper, for real robbed. You know, thief sneaking his hand into my bag taking my wallet scenario, but that's not the end of the story...

I'm still a bit shaken by the incidence that occurred today. I was browsing some socks in a store, engrossed in my own world of stripes, colours or dots. All of a sudden I felt a tug on my handbag, like someone had walked into me from the side and accidentally gotten something caught in my bag. I turned around and saw a small man in his mid 30's standing behind me, looking dumbstruck at me. Actually, he looked very surprised. So I looked down at my bag as a precaution and saw it had been opened. Me being absolutely meticulous with checking my handbag is safe and seeing this suspicious man behind me, standing awfully near to me, I connected the dots and realised what had happened. And I couldn't believe it. So I said in a very as-a-matter-of-a-fact voice:
"You just took my wallet!"
He looked so shocked and perplexed at me, like I had just caught him doing something red-handed, which I had. I quickly looked down at his hand furthest away from me and there it was, my beautiful, faux-crocodile, deep vine coloured wallet... clenched in his hand. I reached down and snatched it back from him, now clutching it hard in my own hand. I stared at him angrily and then said boomingly so everyone in the store could hear:
"He just took my wallet!"
The thief's eyes widened as I raised my voice again:
"I can't believe it. He just took my wallet!"
Obviously I must've been in shock, otherwise I wouldn't be stating the fact over and over, but it was true. I couldn't believe it. I had been roobed. The cheek of him to rob me. ME!
He started backing away as I attacked him loudly with my words once again while walking towards him:
"You just took my wallet!"
At this point he panicked, threw the clothes he held in his arms and legged it out the door, with me, the angry customer behind him shouting:
"Stop him. Stop him!"

And so it goes... he vanished onto the busy street. I turned around, walked back into the store and started shaking. Adrenalin hit me full force! I was shocked. And in disbelief. And then angry. I wanted to strangle the thief. And had he given me resistance to give my wallet back, I think I would've kickboxed the pulp out of him. But I'm fine. I have my wallet back and I have a story to tell as well as be extra thankful for life today.

Could be interesting if I see him again though... I'll keep you posted.
But for now, TOODLES!

YOGA

by noreply@blogger.com (Jax) @ Jeacline

This morning my whole body screamed NOOO when the alarm rang. And I noticed I was so tired. Not just sleepy tired, but drained physically and mentally. Something I have learnt over the years is to TRY to listen to my body. Yes, I try to push it as hard as I can, the same I do with those I train, but this morning my body said no. So I only went for a 30 min run and then I tried some yoga. Yes. Me. Doing yoga. And it was only 20-something minutes but it was actually a good session. I wasn't feeling as restless as I usually do when I do yoga.

Have no idea how I got the video on my computer, but from the looks of the clothes, I think it must be about 20 years old. Hahaha! Oh well, maybe it's much better than all the new, trendy yoga videos. I liked it anyway! :)

WISHFUL THINKING

by noreply@blogger.com (Jax) @ Jeacline

As I was thinking "Oh, I wish it was easier to blog..." and logging into my blogger, they announced a new, easier interface. Wishful thinking sometimes works! :)) And so I hope the rest of my life right now will as well. A lot of changes lately for me and I'm a tad tired. Want some structure. Want some stability. Want some grounding. Still though... Sick of counting my calories right now. Sick of weighing every single ham or cheese slice. Sick of not feeling motivated. And then it hits me, sometimes even I need those "I've had it up to HERE" days. So I linger in it... for about a couple of hours and then I get bored and want to dash to the gym for a good workout session. Beat my PB in 5K. Take my Kettlebell license. You get my drift.

Got this question at a superb interview: "What stresses you out?" My answer after a short thinking process: "Waiting, that stresses me out. But I'm working on it." ;))

Have a fab day y'all!

LATEST RESEARCH ON STRETCHING

by noreply@blogger.com (Jax) @ Jeacline

I have been saying for years now that static stretching before exercise isn't as good as we have previously thought. After a hard workout though, I feel there is nothing better than a stretch. Read this interesting article and see how you feel about stretching in general.

Latest research into stretching

There’s increasing evidence that stretching before exercise doesn’t improve performance or reduce injury risk

There’s increasing evidence that stretching before exercise doesn’t improve performance or reduce injury risk. And the most comprehensive review of its kind concluded that flexibility training has no known health benefits(1). Gary O’Donovan presents the evidence to help you decide if stretching is a waste of time.

I recently searched an electronic database for studies about static stretching, ballistic stretching and dynamic stretching (www.pubmed.com). In these studies, torque, 1-repetition maximum (using free weights), maximal voluntary contraction (on a machine), jump height and sprint time were the most common measures of strength and power. Unfortunately, many of the studies included a small number of participants (and had little chance of detecting differences in performance) and some used dodgy statistics(2).

Static stretching

Static stretching involves passive elongation of a muscle or group of muscles(3). I found 61 studies investigating the acute effects of static stretching on strength and power and the conclusions on performance were as follows:

•One study found an improvement in performance(4);

•Thirty-eight studies found reductions in performance(5-42);

•Twenty-two studies found no statistically significant differences in performance between stretching and non-stretching groups(43-64).

Two 15-second stretches or three 30-second stretches were sufficient to reduce performance and more demanding protocols reduced performance for 60-120 minutes following stretching(22,31). Several studies also found that static stretching reduced the elasticity and electrical activity of muscles (see figure 1 and box 1).

It’s unclear if a second warm up can reduce the detrimental effects of static stretching on strength and power(13,65) but what’s undeniable is that the available evidence suggests that static stretching is a waste of time or, worse, is detrimental to performance!

Ballistic stretching

Ballistic stretching involves swinging, bouncing or bobbing movements and the final position is not held (3). I found six studies about the acute effects of ballistic stretching on strength and power: there were no reports of improved performance, one report of decreased performance (62) and five inconclusive reports (10, 38, 40, 56, 63). There were only 14 to 24 participants in each study and elasticity and electrical activity were not assessed. Thus, there is insufficient evidence to recommend ballistic stretching before exercise.

Dynamic stretching

Ballistic stretching and dynamic stretching are given the same definition in the latest American College of Sports Medicine manual(3); however, the prevailing definition of dynamic stretching in the UK is ‘flexibility in action’ and dynamic stretches include ankle flicks, buttock flicks, knee lifts, the ‘Russian walk’, the ‘walking lunge’ and the ‘walking hamstring’(66).

I found 10 studies about the acute effects of dynamic stretching on strength and power: six of these studies found improvements in performance(7,17,54,55,63,64), no studies found decrements in performance and three studies found no statistically significant differences in performance between stretching and non-stretching groups(45,47,49).

One study concluded that dynamic stretching was beneficial, but the authors compared changes in performance in the dynamic stretching and static stretching groups instead of the dynamic stretching and non-stretching groups(25). The available evidence suggests that dynamic stretching is beneficial; however, warming up probably improves performance and it is impossible to distinguish the effects of warming up and stretching in many dynamic stretches.

Stretching and endurance performance

The effects of stretching before exercise and flexibility training on endurance performance are not well documented. Static stretching did not significantly reduce endurance performance in a study of 11 physically active students(67), but it did reduce running economy and endurance performance in a study of 10 trained distance runners(68). US scientists found that a stretching programme did not reduce running economy, but the intervention only lasted 10 weeks(69). Cross-sectional studies can reflect years of exposure to stretching and a study of 34 international-standard distance runners found that the least flexible runners were also the most economical(70).

Stretching after exercise

Although no longer recommended before exercise, static stretching is still recommended during the cool-down(3). The advantages of stretching after exercise might include an increase in range of movement and a decrease in the risk of lower limb injury in those with tight muscles(78,84). The disadvantages of stretching after exercise might include a decrease in running economy(70) and an increase in the risk of lower limb injury in those with loose muscles(78).

Some people say that stretching increases their sense of wellbeing and some also stretch to reduce muscle soreness(82), but there is little evidence that stretching reduces soreness in the days after novel or unusually demanding exercise(85,86). Given limited and conflicting evidence, athletes and coaches should consider if any advantages are likely to be greater than any disadvantages before stretching after exercise.

Summary and conclusions

Large, robust RCTs help ensure that the healthcare budget is spent on interventions that actually work. Anecdotal evidence and testimonials are worthless. The existing evidence suggests that flexibility training has no known health benefits(1); however, ongoing trials may improve our understanding of the effects of stretching and yoga on back pain(87,88). In the meantime, the practical implications box, right, provides some recommendations on stretching for athletes seeking maximum performance.

The kids are barely alright

by noreply@blogger.com (Carissa) @ my bod, my temple

I feel pretty good sometimes with the shizz I've figured out for my own bod and can even claim a few bragging rights to some changes in Master Pete. But when it comes to my offspring, I'm clueless. Hopeless sometimes. Frustrated almost always.

Ok, I can fess up to helping them make a fairly smooth transition from cow to almond milk (we called it snowflake water one Christmas - against my anti-cringeworthy law, but egads, it worked). And now even when Stella goes to friends' houses, she says a quiet no thanks to dairy in her cereal and eats it dry. Gets me all verklempt.

The other victory I wave the flag for is the switch from sugared cereals (even though is was only the classic 1g o' sugar Cheerios) to sugar-free cereal and oatmeal only in the mornings. This one took a long build up and multi-coloured warning system, but here they are now, every morning pouring quinoa puffs into a bowl and dropping handfuls of homemade granola into it. I seriously thought this was going to be a dealbreaker and I'd see them with stick and bandana hitching to nana's house for some frosted flakes.

And admittedly one more. My staunchly anti-whole grain bread seven-year old now loves the stuff. No more begging for baguettes. No more lunches arriving back home with untouched sandwich. Tres amazing.

But this is where the transition ends for my girls. I get the daily pre-dinner declaration of "eating vegetables makes you healthy and strong, right, mommy?" paired later with the equally fervent declaration of "I'm not a vegetarian so I don't eat vegetables!"

As lovely as the little ladies are at breaky, at dinner time, the performance is far from stellar.

"We like lots of stuff! Pizza, pasta and sushi." Well, let's call the diversity council and get you a medal. And when you're trying to go cheese, gluten and generally white stuff free, pizza, pasta and sushi become sad imitations of themselves.

I've tried to get help. I now have practically every kids cookbook under the sun - they get excited about cooking with me and following a recipe, but they want to pick all the sweet stuff in the book to try. And trying to find a vegan or even non-cheese based vegetarian cookbook for kids is impossible.

I've gone through stages of saying, what the hell, I'll just let them choose whatever recipe they want. So we've made pesto pasta (not a hit), eggs baked in ham cups (not a hit) and even something called pretend soup, with yogurt and fruit (a huge hit), but I want them to get excited about dairy-free stuff. I've also gone the Jessica Seinfeld route of hiding purees in brownies and such, but it's a lot of bloody work and doesn't really get me to a place of acceptance with these miniature people.

And if I see or hear about another kid happily eating salad for dinner every night, I may kick a puppy. I get a bite of broccoli on a good night.

So this is where I need help. Have you figured this out? Know people how have? I'll try anything once and thank you a million times.

PIZZA DOUGH NEW RECIPE

by noreply@blogger.com (Jax) @ Jeacline

So, I gave it another try to make the pizza dough a little more authentic to a real one. No, it will never be like the REAL one but this one is so much better than my first few tries. I suppose it's all about trial and error.

This is what I did for my new recipe:

I used oat bran this time, 2 dl in a glass bowl then poured in 4 dl lukewarm water, gave it a stir and then added salt, garlic powder and 1 sachet of dry yeast. Stir it up and microwave it for about 6 minutes so it's proper boiling. Then add 1 eggwhite. Stir. Lastly add 1 coffeespoon of psyllium husks. Stir. Oil a pan or aluminium foil so it doesn't stick. Pour the "dough" onto the foil and flatten it out with a spoon. Bake it in 200 degrees for about 20 minutes. Take it out and flatten it a little bit more. Then bake it until it goes a bit darker brown on the edges. Add your toppings and bake until the toppings take colour. YUU-UU-UU-UUM!!! :))

TRUTHS AND FALSEHOODS ABOUT FAT LOSS

by noreply@blogger.com (Jax) @ Jeacline

Before Embarking On a Fat Loss Programme You Should Read This:

Daily energy expenditure consists of 3 components:

1. Resting metabolic rate (energy required for basic living) total of 60-70%

2. Diet induced Thermogenesis (energy required to breakdown food) 10% of total

3. Energy cost of physical activity 20-30% of the total.

Question:
If we create a caloric deficit of “X” amount – we will lose “Y” amount of fat? (i.e. the calorie deficit = fat loss, a 3500 calorie deficit = 1 pound)
True or False?

False!

In a study of meal frequency, it has been show that a group eating 6 meals per day lost more fat than a group eating 2 meals a day, despite the calories being equal. The study showed that adults who were accustomed to eating 4 meals per day switched to 3 meals a day actually gained body fat and weight despite the calories remaining the same.

Question:
A calorie is a calorie. With the same meal frequency, as long as we adjust the “calories in v. the calories out” we will see the same fat loss; that is proteins, carbohydrates and fat (macronutrients) do not really matter.
True or False?

False!

At the same calorie intake a low carbohydrate diet resulted in significantly greater fat loss than a low fat diet.

Summary:
Low carbohydrate, high protein diets favourably affect mass and composition independent of energy intake

So what Should We Be Doing?

• Increase meal frequency

• Eat meals at regular times

• Lower carbohydrate intake/increase protein

• Moderately reduce calories.

Question:
The addition of aerobic (jogging/gentle running) exercise to a caloric deficit (through diet) will increase calories burned and therefore increase fat lost.
True or False?

False!

In a 6 month study of 2 groups: 1 on diet only and 1 on diet plus aerobic exercise (50 minutes 5 days per week) There was No additional effect of aerobic exercise on body composition that is to say, adding aerobic exercise had no effect over dieting alone.

Question:
If diet (total caloric and macronutrient intake) is a constant, then the more calories you burn during training, the more fat you will lose.
True or False?

False!

A group was divided into 2 smaller groups:

• Group 1 exercised for 15 weeks doing 20 minutes of interval training per session 3 times per week

• Group 2 did 15 weeks of 40 minutes steady state aerobic (jogging) exercise per session 3 times per week

• Both groups burned the same calories over the 15 weeks and ate the same diet.

• The steady state group actually gained on average 1lb of fat.

• The interval training group lost 5.5lb of fat and increased lean mass.

• The interval group also increased aerobic capacity more than the steady state group.

So NOW What Should We Be Doing?

• Increase meal frequency.

• Reduced carbohydrate diet

• Interval training – this should only become part of your training programme once you have developed a foundation of steady state running.

• Resistance training – introduce a controlled well planned weight training programme.

Life as a 95% veg-head

by noreply@blogger.com (Carissa) @ my bod, my temple

Almost two months after the last post and about six weeks into the plant parade and I would say we're about 95% vegilicious. It's been an adventure.

Having already gone through the cheese and meat withdrawal helped big time. Introducing soy into our lives in a big way while we discover how to veganize recipes or just try what's out there has made me uncomfortable. The jury's still out on the lovely green bean's love affair with breast cancer but most docs seem to think the stuff in its purest/fermented form has health benefits (tempeh, miso, tofu, edamame) and to steer clear of the processed stuff that mimics meat or sneaks into other packaged foods. After six weeks of experimentation, I think we're done with the schmeat and cheeze products, but it had to be done.

Four foods that have saved me

Despite the growing knowledge that soy is a frenemy, with great experimentation has also come great rewards. These little suckers have made the experience worth it:

  • Field roast sausages - no soy, only veg and grains and perfect for a Sunday morning fry-up
  • Coconut milk - we have been feasting on the flesh of the coconut for awhile now, but I have a renewed appreciation for the good fat of coconut oil for high-heat cooking, coconut manna for frosting, and coconut milk for whipped cream, smoothies and ice cream
  • Beans - chock full of antioxidants, fibre and vitamins, we're trying our damndest to get these into our diet several times a week
  • Mushrooms - they give good bite when you're looking for something meaty and they boost your immunity in a big way, especially if you buy the non-button variety
Four habits/situations that have saved me

I could not have gone this far without a few rock-hard things in my life:
  • Juicing - I still do it every weekday for breakfast and still spend an hour every Sunday afternoon washing and bagging for the week. I couldn't live without it and it gets the green stuff into my blood at least once a day.
  • Meal planning - I have a shiteload of cookbooks now and I spend an hour every Saturday poring over them and planning every dinner for the week. My girls like about 5% of what I cook, but they get variety and they'll eventually appreciate all this, right? Ballz.
  • Living where we do - our local grocery store has everything, the best veg shop in the city is less than 10 mins away and there's a veg lunch place next door to my work. Opportunities to be good abound.
  • Ma famiglia - Pete and the girls have been soldiers. They're interested in the weekly menus, they try stuff and they're on board this crazy train with me no matter where we stop.
I've been less hardcore about gluten and various sugars during this experimental phase. I didn't want to scare my squirrelly self away. I've also been relaxed about eating out. There is egg pasta, the occasional parmesan lovefest and a titch of chicken, especially with the last month of psychotic travelling for work. But 95% of the time, I'm trying to be conscious of what I eat and our kitchen (save a chicken wing or two in the freezer) is vegan. I'm pretty proud of that. There's still more experimentation to do, especially with grains. At our last Whole Foods trip in Vancouver, we stocked up on things like farro and spelt berries and I haven't broken those babies out yet.

I'm still not sure where we'll end on the veg continuum, but I like figuring this shizz out. If I'm fighting off  reocurrence along the way, then blammo.

In brief: The food was off the hook and the city was madness. Plus, I'm 40 now.

by noreply@blogger.com (Joss and Brent) @ Brent and Jossy in Aussie

Sorry! Forgot to post this one...

Today was my final exam of the semester! It was a lot harder than our other exams have been and I think it’s because they are trying to scare us all into studying hard for our Barrier Exams in October.

I can’t believe I only have 5 more months of school on campus before I move out to the hospital. I can’t wait! I also finally got my schedule for the next 2 years- and it turns out that I will be doing my GP/community rotation next March-May (probably in Ontario).

Brent has also recently put in another visa application to Australian Immigration, hoping that they will change their mind this time. Jamie helped us write a really amazing letter which I hope will make the difference!

I’m also really looking forward to going home TOMORROW!! This past month has been really busy, so the next 10 days at home will hopefully give me a chance to relax a little.

I don’t have much else to report as far as school goes. I’ve been busy studying and learning about gastroenterology (failure to thrive, peptic ulcers, Crohn’s, celiac’s, IBS, etc…). At the hospital this week we had to do our first PR exams on ‘volunteers’ who were being paid $50/hour. Not my most favourite thing this year, to say the least.

Well on that note, I think I better go. This is going to be a short blog since I’ve got lots of packing to do. Hope to see lots of you on the weekend! xo

On the street where you live

by noreply@blogger.com (Carissa) @ my bod, my temple

Call the police, yo, two posts in two nights!

Ok, this one my brain can't quite process yet. When I was in my chemo fog, back in the cancer dancing days, I drove down my little street to drop the girls off at school one rainy morning and in a car coming the other way I swore I saw my oncologist, Dr. A. But the red syringe of death plays tricks on your mind, y'all, so I chalked it up to diminishing brain cells.

Then a few months ago, Pete said he swore he saw Dr. A. on our street, near this house at the end of the road with a gigantic yard and fruit trees galore that Pete steals from regularly to get some bona fide organic apples for juicing. Dr. A has a pretty distinctive look - jutting eye teeth, Olive Oyl height and weight and that tight, short Victoria perm of a certain vintage - so I was inclined to believe him, but not quite prepared to.

Then just this past Saturday we were driving the girls to swimming and there she was, standing on the edge of the street where I live, near the place where I saw her driving and across from the house that Pete suspected she lived in. She was grinning like an idiot at us as we drove by but I just stared at her all Invasion of the Body Snatchers-like.

I mean, seriously? My onc lives on my street? I die.

I have this back story about why we moved to Victoria... my mom had been seriously sick a couple of times and I wanted my kids to be closer to my parents while they were still young old people. But two years after we moved, I got sick and my mom and dad took care of me and my kids while the intake board at the Cancer Agency read out my diagnosis and Dr. A, who could serenade me from her balcony, put up her hand to take my file and save my ever-loving life.

I am the least religious, spiritual, kismet, karma, fatalistic gal you'll ever meet, but goddess if that ain't somethin' else.
