It’s hard to put exact numbers on it — but Alberta’s carbon tax is taking its toll, say farmers. And that toll increased at the start of the year, when the carbon tax increased to $30 a tonne — a 50 per cent jump from the initial $20-a-tonne tax implemented a year ago. Read more: […] Read more

Calf health closely tied to cow nutrition

Many cows came home in 2017 from pastures parched by drought for much of the grazing season. DAVID ELLEFSON Calls DAVE MUSTAINE His 'Big Brother', Says 'We're Lifetime Buddies'
by @ BLABBERMOUTH.NET
Mon Feb 12 12:37:12 PST 2018
During an interview with Metal Injection conducted at last month's NAMM show in Anaheim, California, MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson was asked to say something nice about his bandmate, Dave Mustaine, to counter all the negative stuff about the MEGADETH leader floating around online. Ellefson said (see video below): "Well, look, Dave is a very bold person. When he thinks something, he says it — for better or for worse. And that does come back to bite him once in a while. But for the most part, he's a very honest and a he's a very genuine guy, and that's always one of the things I appreciated about him. The first day I met him, it was, like, 'Okay, this guy is a real rock star. There's guys outside walking down the street that look like Vince Neil and there's the David Lee Roth wannabes hanging around Hollywood. Dave is the real guy.' He's a real artist, and there's a real simplicity to him. "As complex as Dave sometimes seems, he's a pretty simple guy," he continued. "When he'll pick up a guitar and just start playing something, he'll come up with a riff and you're, like, 'That wasn't that hard. I could have come up with that.' But I didn't — he did. And that's kind of the beauty. As his friend, and as a bandmate with him, that's been one of the kind of smile-inside moments that I get when we're standing there working on things together. And that he's really in the moment. Dave is not a guy who's kind of over there or over there — he's really in the moment. And his music is very authentic, it's very true. And one thing I really learned from him is that this whole deal is about charisma, and Dave's not afraid to just put himself out there for who he really is, and that takes a lot of balls. And so I think that's kind of been nice with our partnership — I'm kind of like the 'Minnesota nice guy,' as they call it in Minnesota, and that, I think, has benefited Dave, and who Dave is has certainly benefited me. "When I moved here in '83, Dave showed me the ropes of L.A." he added. "I was the only guy with a set of wheels in my band, so we would drive around and that's how I learned how to drive these gnarly streets of L.A. and the freeways. And Dave, having had experience on the streets, he taught me how to grow up in L.A. He's been a big brother to me as much as anything. "So those are things about Dave that are just… That's kind of what makes our friendship and our bond so… You know, we're lifetime buddies; that's just how it is between me and Dave." Ellefson was in MEGADETH from the band's inception in 1983 to 2002, when the group briefly broke up because Mustaine suffered severe nerve damage that left him unable to play. After Mustaine reformed MEGADETH with an all-new lineup in 2004, Ellefson sued his former bandmate for $18.5 million, alleging that Mustaine still owed him substantial merchandise and publishing royalties. In January 2005, the case was dismissed in court, and five years later, Ellefson rejoined MEGADETH. In a January 2016 interview with the Cape Girardeau, Missouri radio station Real Rock 99.3, Mustaine implied that Ellefson was not a founding member of the band because, he said, "MEGADETH was already in its formative phase long before I even knew David Ellefson." The bassist later said that he was "technically" a founding member of MEGADETH because he was "in the room" the day MEGADETH decided to change its name from the previous working moniker of FALLEN ANGEL at the suggestion of the band's then-guitarist Greg Handevidt. In addition to Mustaine and Ellefson, MEGADETH's current lineup includes former SOILWORK drummer Dirk Verbeuren and Brazilian guitarist Kiko Loureiro, who was previously best known for his work with ANGRA. MEGADETH's latest album, "Dystopia", was released in January 2016.
SMASHING PUMPKINS Explain D'ARCY WRETZKY's Absence From Rumored Reunion
by @ BLABBERMOUTH.NET
Mon Feb 12 13:13:43 PST 2018
SMASHING PUMPKINS have denied claims by original bassist D'arcy Wretzky that an invite for her to join the reunited band was later rescinded. D'arcy alleged in an interview with BlastEcho that SMASHING PUMPKINS leader Billy Corgan sent her a contract that was agreed upon, but a month later, he told her "that wasn't a real offer." She said: "My apologies to all of the SMASHING PUMPKINS fans out there who are excited about this oncoming reunion tour of the original members of the band. I know this is a huge disappointment for me, as well, but it's not going to happen." Earlier today, SMASHING PUMPKINS released a statement explaining why Wretzky won't be taking part in the band's reunion. "In reuniting THE SMASHING PUMPKINS, the band's dedication remains to its fans and its music," the statement reads. "To that, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin and William Corgan haven't played a show with D'arcy Wretzky for over 18 years. But it's not for a lack of trying. For despite reports, Ms. Wretzky has repeatedly been invited out to play with the group, participate in demo sessions, or at the very least, meet face-to-face, and in each and every instance, she always deferred. We wish her all the best, and look forward to reconnecting with you all very soon." THE SMASHING PUMPKINS have not yet officially confirmed their reunion, but the band's web site was updated over the weekend with a countdown clock set to expire on Thursday, which will likely coincide with the announcement. Earlier in the month, the SMASHING PUMPKINS did a new photo shoot in Los Angeles, featuring frontman Billy Corgan, original guitarist James Iha, founding drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and latter-era guitarist Jeff Schroeder. Corgan, Iha and Chamberlin make up three-quarters of the PUMPKINS' charter lineup, with only Wretzky missing. It's unclear if Schroeder will be taking over on the bass for the alleged reunion or if he will stay on as third guitarist while the group recruits a new bassist. Although Iha played a handful of shows with the PUMPKINS in 2016, this would mark the first time he's recorded and toured with the band since 2000. Chamberlin has toured with the PUMPKINS for the last couple of years but last recorded with the group in 2007. Corgan, Iha, Chamberlin and Schroeder have all been photographed in a Los Angeles studio recently, where the PUMPKINS are said to be working with producer Rick Rubin. Corgan even hinted at the possibility of a double album by writing that there were "26 songs currently in various states of completion, production, insanity."

METAL CHURCH Drummer STET HOWLAND's Cancer Is In Remission
by @ BLABBERMOUTH.NET
Mon Feb 12 12:57:44 PST 2018
Former W.A.S.P. and current METAL CHURCH drummer Stet Howland is in remission from Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), an aggressive type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that develops from the B-cells in the lymphatic system. Howland revealed the good news on his Facebook page, saying that results from last Friday's a positron emission tomography (PET) scan showed "no detectable cancer in my body." He added that when he received the report, "I nearly shit myself I was so happy. Needless to say, there were tears of joy here at my house." Last October, Howland began chemotherapy treatments, with each treatment consisting of Stet checking into the hospital as an inpatient and running continuously on chemo (16-hour drips, one right after the other) for just under five full days. On his days "off," he continued to go in for blood testing and received blood transfusions every couple of days. In his latest Facebook post, Howland said that he "lost six months of my life and every hair on my body to a dreadful disease that usually takes good people's lives. The financial doom that came with it will follow me for a while, but honestly, in my opinion, huge financial debt cannot be weighed against the value of life itself. So now I owe hundreds of thousands of dollars — big fucking deal. That's a gift when compared to the alternative." A GoFundMe page has been created to help Stet cover the cost of his medical expenses. Stet was named METAL CHURCH's permanent new drummer in July 2017. He stated at the time that he was "honored to be a member of such a group of people" and vowed to do his "best to deliver strong performances both live and in the studio." He added in a social media post: "I consider myself a very lucky man who has done many great things in my life. I have been blessed to play in several iconic bands in my career. But my current METAL CHURCH gig is the unrivaled pinnacle of it all."

The savage shredder knows what he likes in his guitars and was extremely hands-on with the development process, making sure that every detail lived up to his expectations. One of metal's most successful and revered players, Thomson's game changing, take-no-prisoners approach to metal guitar has influenced countless musicians worldwide, while his black hole-heavy de-tuned guitar sound has been an integral part of SLIPKNOT for more than two decades. Jackson pays tribute to Thomson with brand new sinister axes made to match the guitarist's fiendish disposition. Capable of handling his acclaimed aggressive technique and tone, the USA Signature Mick Thomson Soloist is loaded with premium features including genuine mahogany body wings coupled with a graphite reinforced through-body three-piece quartersawn maple neck, 12"-16" compound radius ebony fingerboard with 24 jumbo frets, a pair of beastly sounding Mick Thomson signature Seymour Duncan Blackouts pickups, single volume control and three-way blade switch, active electronics, Jackson MTB HT6 hardtail bridge, Schaller locking strap buttons, recessed barrel jack, Jackson-branded sealed die cast tuners, and matching reverse pointed 6-in-line headstock. With classic style, the USA Signature Mick Thomson Soloist is available in either Arctic White with black binding or in Black with white binding and comes with a SKB hardshell case. Similar to the USA model, the Pro Series Signature Mick Thomson Soloist SL2 comes in the same Arctic White and Black finishes with binding and also features his signature Seymour Duncan Blackouts pickups and the MTB HT6 hardtail bridge. The Pro SL2 has a mahogany body and a graphite reinforced through-body one-piece maple neck with a 12"-16" compound radius ebony fingerboard featuring 24 jumbo frets and block side dots. Other features include a single volume control, three-way blade switch, recessed barrel jack, Jackson-branded sealed die-cast tuners, standard strap buttons, and matching Jackson reverse pointed 6-in-line headstock. At last month's NAMM show in Anaheim, California, Thomson spoke to Thomann Music about his relationship with Jackson. "I was with B.C. Rich for a few years, but Bernie [Rico] Sr. died right when I first got with them," he said. "And my first two guitars were made with Bernie Sr., and that happened, and it really, obviously, put a damper on… how are you the same? But Bernie Jr. took over and he was doing his thing for a while, and things just changed and it just wasn't the same anymore. The company changed hands to a totally different company, so you see the guirar, but it's not even the Rico family anymore. People are always, like, 'You should never have left.' I'm, like, 'You don't know all the ins and outs of all the stuff that happens.' And I love 'em, and I still love 'em, and the guitars that they made for me are amazing; I still play 'em at home. They might pop in on tracks once in a while. It just depends on the right tool for the job, whatever. And Ibanez — nothing against them; they made some great stuff. I was there 13 years. But I'd always kind of thought, 'What if I would have just done Jackson off the bat anyway?' Because that was my baby, that was my guitar, but I just got talking to… I met the guys from B.C. Rich and they got some stuff to me and I was super impressed, and that was just kind of the way we went. 'Cause those guys were awesome. Opportunities come up. You're young and someone throws you some really well-made guitars, and you're, like, 'Dude, I'll take it.'" For more information and to find a dealer near you, visit www.jacksonguitars.com.

ROB HALFORD Says 'There's Been A Lot Of Emotion' Following GLENN TIPTON's Announcement He Will Step Back From Touring
by @ BLABBERMOUTH.NET
Mon Feb 12 07:22:46 PST 2018
Rob Halford wants to make it clear to fans that Glenn Tipton is still a member of JUDAS PRIEST. The guitarist announced earlier today that he will be sitting out the band's touring activities as a result of his battle with Parkinson's disease, with which he was diagnosed a decade ago. In an interview conducted several hours ago, the JUDAS PRIEST singer spoke to U.K.'s Kerrang! magazine about what Tipton's revelation means for the band. "There's been a lot of emotion today with the announcement, but we're very happy for Glenn, that he's been able to make a decision that's good for him and where he's at right now," Halford said. "Glenn's thing was that this was all about the band. It was the band, the band the band. And we said, 'No, it's about what's best for you,' and he said, 'No, I want what's best for the band.' Which just goes to show you where his heart is at." Tipton — who joined JUDAS PRIEST in 1974 prior to recording the band's debut album, "Rocka Rolla" — will be replaced on the road by Andy Sneap, who produced PRIEST's upcoming album, "Firepower", and who is an accomplished guitarist in his own right. "The most important thing is that Glenn is still in JUDAS PRIEST," Rob told Kerrang! "It's just that his role is going to be different. He can't tour, but it's going to be great for fans when he comes out every now and then to do 'Breaking The Law' or 'Living After Midnight'. The love that we've had already has been amazing, and I know when he walks onstage whenever we do that, it's going to be something special." "Firepower", the band's 18th album, will be released on March 9. The North American leg of the "Firepower" tour will kick off on March 13 in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania and will wrap on May 1 in San Antonio, Texas. Support on the trek will come from SAXON and BLACK STAR RIDERS.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD Singer Credits 'Ambition' And 'Luck' For Band's Commercial Success
by @ BLABBERMOUTH.NET
Mon Feb 12 08:54:08 PST 2018
M. Shadows spoke to Wichita's 89.1 KMUW about the fact that AVENGED SEVENFOLD is one of only a few newer bands that are able to fill arenas in North America. "I think that there's a lot of ambition that goes into it but also a lot of luck," the singer said. "We were around in a time when we were able to hit the tail end of MTV and we were able to hit the tail end of record sales. That set us on our path to be one of those last bands that had that kind of push that a lot of bands nowadays aren't going to be able to get. I think there's definitely some luck involved." He continued: "This [current North American headlining] tour has surprised me the most because we're 18 years into our career and these are the best ticket sales we've ever had. Most of these shows are selling out and they're selling out quick, so I think it has to do with an accumulation of time and if you continually put on a good show and try to do the right moves and try to put out good records. After a while, there's less and less bands at these big shows so the fans, when you come to their city, it's an event. I think that's important, that you make it an event for them so that every time you come through they want to come out." AVENGED SEVENFOLD skipped this year's Grammy Awards in apparent protest of the way the organization treats the rock and heavy metal genres. The band received its first-ever Grammy nomination this year in the "Best Rock Song" category for the song "The Stage", the title track from its latest LP. AVENGED SEVENFOLD recently released a deluxe edition of "The Stage" and began a North American headlining tour on January 12 in Nashville with special guests BREAKING BENJAMIN and BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE.
