Keeping Older Pets Healthy - A Holistic Approach

by @ Holistic Pet Info: Blog Posts

How to Improve and Maintain the Health of Older Pets

The ASPCA announced that the incidents of cancer and other diseases are becoming more common in older dogs and cats. Many health innovations allow pets to live longer but their likelihood for contracting debilitating diseases also increases as they age.

A holistic approach to pet health care suggests you:
• Feed pets a well balanced, high quality diet to ensure they are getting essential nutrients.
• Exercise your pets as part of an active lifestyle
• Actively maintain emotional well-being in your pet by offering a loving environment

The effect of these steps is to increase the longevity of your pet. These are also steps to ensure your pet’s elder years are good ones.

Exercise for Senior Dogs

Exercise is important for older dogs to prevent obesity and arthritis. However, you need to recognize your dog is not a puppy anymore. What was once a vigorous 2 or 3 mile walk may become a leisurely 2 or 3 loops around the block. Try to maintain a routine for walking senior dogs. Go at a time of day when your dog is loose and mobile, and at a distance and pace that seems comfortable. Your dog may be the last to realize he is not a puppy anymore, so you have to control the level of exertion to avoid injury.

Preventing Cancer in Dogs and Cats

Throughout your pet’s lifecycle, there are steps you can to help avoid the development of cancer in older dogs and cats:
• Have your pet neutered or spayed. This helps prevent mammary tumors and ovarian, uterine and testicular cancers.
• Avoid toxins such as pesticides and other chemical lawn-products.
• Use pet-approved sunscreen on fair skinned animals with thin coats.
• Use natural supplements and herbs to support the immune system.
• Take your pet to the vet at the first sign of any mass or lump.

Diet for older Dogs and Cats

As older animals become less active, they need food lower in protein and carbohydrates to avoid weight gain. Choose a food formulated for senior animals and avoid the temptation to give them unhealthy table scraps. Older animals have trouble absorbing nutrients from food. Supplements with digestive enzymes can help as can a daily multivitamin. Antioxidants help to slow down the effects of aging.

Joint Health

Like obesity, your pet can avoid joint pain and arthritis problems with preventative health care. Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements can be used to maintain joint and cartilage health before problems become pronounced. These supplements also help relieve pain and restore mobility in older animals that tend to stiffen up, particularly after napping.

The real key to having a healthy senior pet is a holistic lifestyle that prevents disease from developing. You might be surprised how active and happy an older dog or cat can be when they have had the proper diet, exercise, and attention.

How To Prepare Your Pet For Colder Weather

by Cassie Younginer @ Superfoods for Super Pets | Solid Gold Pet Food

I don’t know about you, but the only time I like hearing the words “colder” and “weather” together are when sung by Zac Brown. As your typical Southerner, it hits 60 degrees and we pull out our heaviest jackets and bibs and crank up the fires. Signs of Cushings Disease in Dogs

by @ Holistic Pet Info: Blog Posts

Cushings Disease in dogs is not a condition that improves on its own without treatment. The most common cause is a microscopic, benign pituitary tumor, which oversecretes a hormone that causes the adrenals to produce cortisol. Alternatively the adrenals can have a primary tumor that secretes too much cortisol. Half of these tumors are benign and the other half malignant that tend to spread to the lungs and liver.

The result of either of these two tumors is a chronic excess of blood cortisol. In effect, the dog is poisoned with too much cortisol and cannot rely on its own feedback mechanism to regulate the blood cortisol level.

Top ten signs of cushings syndrome are: increased thirst, increased urination, increased appetitie, abdominal enlargement, hair loss/thinning, inflamed skin, panting, muscle weakness, thin skin and lethargy. Left untreated, cushings disease will progress. As excess cortisol is immunosuppressive, these dogs are prone to various infections. They are also predisposed to developing hypothyroidism, pancreatitis, diabetes, seizures, hypertension, congestive heart failure, blood clots, liver and kidney failure.

It is always advised to get a definitive diagnosis before starting either conventional therapy or using a more holistic approach. For more information, visit our webpage Canine Cushings Disease.

Fireworks and Dogs - Tips to Keep Pets Calm

by @ Holistic Pet Info: Blog Posts

Fireworks & Dogs - Tips to Keep Pets Calm

Thunderstorms, fireworks, New Years and other loud celebrations can be a scary time for dogs and cats. The loud booming noises that accompany fireworks causes anxiety and stress in pets.

An animal's sense of hearing is more acute than ours and so the noises are much more intense for them. Adding to that their lack of understanding as to what is going on and BANG! You have a scared little pet on your hands.

When a pet becomes afraid, they may display unwanted or dangerous behavior such as:

  • Fleeing the yard or house
  • Biting, hissing or showing other signs of aggression
  • Chewing or destroying furniture and other property
  • Shaking, howling, whining or loosing control of their bladder.

Tips for Reducing Pet's Fear of Fireworks

Here are some tips for helping your pet cope with fireworks, thunderstorms, and other loud noises:

  • Don't take your pets to outdoor celebrations. The loud noises can cause dogs to flee or hide and this can be dangerous. A scared dog, running through crowds and/or traffic in the dark is a recipe for disaster.
  • Ideally, leave them at home with a human companion. If you must leave them alone, place them in a secure room or crate. Cover the crate with a blanket to help reduce the noise. Shut the curtains and drapes and turn on lights to lessen the flash of the fireworks.
  • Leave on a TV or music to drown out the noise from the fireworks. (This works during thunderstorm season as well.)
  • Make sure that they are wearing their identification tags and that the information is current.
  • Exercise them before the festivities begin -- tire them out with a rigorous game of fetch or a long walk. Be sure to do this an hour or two before you leave them to give them time to calm down and enter a restful state.

National Holistic Pet Day

by @ Holistic Pet Info: Blog Posts

Celebrate Holistic Pet Day Everyday!

August 30 is National Holistic Pet Day. Why limit it to one day? Follow these simple steps to incorporate a holistic approach to pet health every day.

  • Exercise: Walk your dog, play with your cat, get active! Lack of activity cascades into a host of physical and emotional health problems for dogs and cats (and humans).
  • Diet: Overfeeding your pet leads to obesity which leads to health issues. Provide your pet the best diet you can afford. Processed foods are convenient, but the more natural diet you can provide the better. Avoid foods with chemical preservatives and animal by-products.
  • Nutritional Supplements: Supplements are one way to ensure your pet is getting the necessary nutrients it needs. Vitamins, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids given regularly support the immune system and help to prevent disease. Glucosamine supports joint health. Herbal remedies can calm nervous, easily agitated dogs and cats.
  • Find a Good Vet: Choose a vet that does not dismiss the holistic health approach This means appointments are about how to prevent disease rather than only treating existing symptoms. A good resource to find a vet is the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association.
  • Avoid Exposure to Toxins: Dogs and cats lie on furniture, carpets and grass. Avoid using chemical lawn products (pesticides) and try to use natural home cleaning products.

Make your pet an important part of your life. This is what makes for truly holistic health. The affection you show your pet supports their physical health, and yours.

Holistic Health Care Tips for Dogs

by @ Holistic Pet Info: Blog Posts

Ten Holistic Health Tips for Dogs
There is anecdotal evidence that suggests caring for a dog makes you healthier. Dogs don’t complicate things, and they remind us not to. Healthy dogs express joy with ease, which is actually an enlightened trait. And loyalty? Don’t even bother to compare dogs with most people.
Dogs are hearty animals, but ultimately you control your pet’s health. Here are ten tips that use the holistic approach to raising a healthy dog:
  1. Exercise: Walk your dog, play fetch, and take her anywhere she is welcome to sniff around. For all the unconditional love your dog brings you, the number one thing you can give back is to provide your dog with an active lifestyle. Lack of activity cascades into a host of physical and emotional health problems.
  2. Diet: People control what domestic dogs eat. Processed foods are convenient, but the more natural diet you can provide the better. Avoid foods with chemical preservatives and animal by-products. Inexpensive cuts of meat and fresh vegetables can be less expensive than prepared food, so prepare something fresh when you can.
  3. Don’t overfeed your dog: Nearly 40% of dogs in the U.S. are considered obese. Do your dog a favor and cut back on the extra meals and non-nutritious treats. Also, do Tip #1.
  4. Nutritional Supplements: Supplements are one way to ensure your dog is getting the necessary nutrients it needs. Vitamins, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids given regularly support the immune system and help to prevent disease. Glucosamine supports joint health. Herbal remedies can calm nervous, easily agitated dogs.
  5. Find a good Vet: Choose a vet that does not dismiss the holistic health approach -- This means appointments are about how to prevent disease rather than only treating existing symptoms.
  6. Take care of dental health: We often overlook dental care with dogs, but bad teeth lead to a range of other health problems. Not enough owners follow recommendations to brush their dog’s teeth daily. If you don’t brush, give her teeth cleaning treats and chew toys. Inspect your dog’s teeth for signs of periodontal disease.
  7. Avoid exposure to toxins: Dogs get into things they shouldn’t—and it may just be the sewer water in front of the house. Avoid using chemical lawn care products and use natural home cleaning products.
  8. Control fleas and ticks: Look for non-chemical control and cleaning products.
  9. Stay informed about health issues: Know how to look for early signs of disease so you can take preventative action.
  10. Make your dog part of your life: This is what makes truly holistic health. The affection you show for your dog supports physical health. And best of all, this is a health benefit your dog will return to you.

Dog with Allergies and Mange

by @ Holistic Pet Info: Blog Posts

Question: I am interested in one of your product, Kelp Help for my pet Pekingese who is suffering from allergies and demodectic mange. He bites his tail frequently. I wonder if this product suitable for pets with such problems. Does it contains ingredients that should be avoided by pets with allergy problems? Thank you for your prompt reply.
Response: Hello, Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. There are 3 components to allergies: fleas, food and environmental. If he has demodectic mange, is he being treated for this condition? This is not an allergy but rather an external parasite that can cause itching. Also, what allergies has he been diagnosed with? If it’s fleas, then the proper topical can help tremendously with the tail biting. Have you placed your dog on a food elimination trial to rule out any food allergies? If it’s environmental such as grasses or trees, then supplements will be of great help. The itching will not resolve without finding out the primary cause of the itchiness.
I strongly recommend you take your dog into your vet or holistic vet to help determine the source of the allergy. Immugen and Moducare by Thorne, are excellent supplements to support the skin and immune system. Kelp Help by Naturvet and Super EPA by Thorne are good for the skin especially if there are deficiencies in the diet. Unless your dog has an allergy to beef, Kelp Help should not be a problem. Best of luck. Sincerely, Colleen Smith DVM, CVA

Herbs and Supplements to Calm Dogs and Cats

by @ Holistic Pet Info: Blog Posts

Trips to the vet or groomers, separation anxiety, thunderstorms and new additions to the family can all bring on stress and anxiety to dogs and cats. This stress can lead to unwanted behavior such as excessive barking, destructive chewing or scratching, marking and aggression.

In many cases, you can correct the bad behavior by eliminating the cause or changing the environment.
  • If a dog is digging holes or barking excessively, he may be telling you he’s bored and needs more stimulation or exercise.
  • If your cat suddenly begins urinating outside the litter box, she may be suffering from a urinary tract infection.
Address any medical issues first and then look at trying to change bad behavior with behavior modification techniques. Natural calming aids can be used along with behavior modification training. Like many people, a pet is more receptive to learning when they are in a calm state.

The following herbs, amino acids, vitamins and other nutrients can have a calming effect on dogs and cats:
  • Thiamine (Vitamin B1) is considered an "anti-stress" vitamin because of its ability to enhance the activity of the immune system and improve the body's ability to withstand stressful conditions.
  • Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that has been found to increase brain levels of serotonin, a calming neurotransmitter and/or melatonin, a sleep-inducing hormone. Studies with humans and animals have shown that serotonin nerve circuits promote feelings of well-being, calm, personal security, relaxation, confidence and concentration.
  • Valerian is known for its calming effect and is frequently used in connection with nervousness, anxiety, nervous restlessness, anxiety-induced illness or upset stomach.
  • L-Theanine is an amino acid found in green tea and has been extensively researched for its ability to reduce stress, anxiety and unwanted behavior. It helps the body to produce other calming amino acids such as Dopamine, GABA and Tryptophan. Studies done on L-Theanine showed that dogs had reduced anxiety-related behavior without adverse effects or drowsiness.
  • Colostrum has a calming effect on animals by supporting cognitive function and promoting relaxation.
  • Chamomile has a wide variety of uses including for pets with nervousness and anxiety. Chamomile's high content of the amino acid tryptophan has been used for sleeplessness and insomnia for hundreds of years. It is commonly used to calm the nerves, reduce anxiety and induce a state of pleasant relaxation without disrupting normal function or interfering with motor coordination. It is also an anti-inflammatory herb that has antimicrobial properties (for pets with skin infections) and for its ability to heal wounds.
  • Passion Flower contains several flavonoids that exhibit a sedative effect on the central nervous system. Chrysin, a monoflavonoid, affects the central receptors of the brain and the combination of flavonoids act as an anxiolytic which helps to promote relaxation, soothe tension and relieve occasional anxiety and panic caused by emotional stress.

Look for one or more of these ingredients when you are considering a natural calming aid for your pet.

Calcium Supplement for Dogs and Cats

by @ Holistic Pet Info: Blog Posts

Many pet parents choose to prepare a home-made diet for their four-legged friends because they want to avoid all the preservatives, by-products and fillers that are common in commercial pet food. But sometimes, a home-prepared diet may lack the necessary vitamins and minerals that a pet needs and this is where supplementation may be beneficial.

Calcium is one of the most challenging minerals for the animal body to utilize. Calcium from bone meal can be difficult for animals to fully digest. This is because the nutritional values of bone meal, which is typically in the range of 24% calcium and 12% phosphorus, are locked within relatively large particles. These particles are very slow to digest and most will likely pass through the body before much of their calcium can be absorbed into the body.

Animal Essentials Seaweed Calcium on the other hand, is 34% pure calcium that is contained in very small, porous particles. This porosity allows digestive acids to permeate the particles so they can dissolve quickly in the stomach for more thorough digestion. Animal Essentials Seaweed Calcium also contains magnesium which is necessary for calcium absorption into the bone.

Here are two books I often recommend for people interested in feeding their dog or cat a home-made diet:

"Home-Prepared Dog and Cat Diets: The Healthful Alternative," by Donald R. Strombeck, DVM
"Dr. Petcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats," by Richard Pitcairn, DVM

Not all “clinical studies” are created equal

by Barb Murphy @ inClover

It’s not hard to find a pet supplement claiming to be “vet tested,” “clinically tested,” “clinical proven,” has “clinical results” or some other variation, but not all “clinical studies” are created equal. Survey studies: Some companies play fast and loose with their testing claims, while there was nothing “clinical” or “scientific” about their “study.” Many of […]

Enzyme Supplements for Dogs and Cats - Does your pet need them?

by @ Holistic Pet Info: Blog Posts

People and pets produce enzymes by the saliva glands, stomach, and pancreas. Enzymes are also present in raw and unprocessed foods and these active enzymes work together with digestive enzymes to break down food during the digestive process.

When foods are cooked at high temperatures, as most commercial pet foods are, the enzymes are destroyed and so pets must rely on their own limited supply of enzymes to break down the food. Also, as dogs and cats age, their production of digestive enzymes decreases either because of the slowing of their metabolism or from conditions affecting the pancreas.

This deficiency in enzyme levels can lead to a host of digestive problems including:
  • Undigested food which can ferment in the stomach
  • Bloating and gas
  • Malnutrition or vitamin deficiency because nutrients aren't absorbed
  • Coprophagia (when a cat or dog eats its own stool)
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Low energy levels or sluggishness

Some of these digestive disorders can also be linked to an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Probiotics are often used with digestive enzymes to promote healthy digestion and restore balance in the gastrointestinal tract. By giving your pet a digestive boost and keeping his intestinal microflora in balance, you can be assured that your favorite friend is getting the maximum nutritional benefit from his food. Best of all, with improved digestion, your pet’s energy will rebound, giving him the quality of his life he deserves.

What is the difference between prebiotics and probiotics?

by Barb Murphy @ inClover

Probiotics are “good” or “friendly” bacteria that reside within the gut (intestines) of mammals, including humans, dogs and cats. Probiotics are living organisms that act as little “factories” that produce essential nutrients the body needs to function. Each animal has his or her own unique, preferred strain of probiotics.
