Why do we run diagnostic tests?

by Katie Daniel @ Veterinary Practice News

The purpose of any diagnostic test should be to improve the outcome for our patients. Tests should be selected so that they give us information that leads to reduced morbidity and mortality. Testing has risks, as well as benefits, so if the results of a test will not meaningfully affect our clinical decisions or the wellbeing of our patients, then it should not be run.

Electronic Bookkeeping in Financial & Accounting Services

by @ OVC Bulletin

A project team has been hard at work for many months developing and implementing a new order entry process and QuickBooks accounting system for financial record keeping at OVC in Shared Administrative Services. The team consists of Bohan Jiang, Andrew Ford, Justin Sheba and Jiasu Chen (a CBE student). They are located in the Dean’s Office project space in VMI room 219.

Karla De Uslar, Frances Graziotto and Lucy Schenk have been tremendous partners during the purchasing and payment services “Go-Live” phase over the last week. Change of this type is difficult and disruptive and they have shown true determination and adaptability. Others will be trained in using the system and process in the coming weeks.

All involved deserve tremendous credit for their great work and successes along the way.

Though this project is not immediately visible to many members of the college it improves our audit compliance and provides tremendous value in the areas of Accounts Receivable and Purchasing/Accounts Payable, critical functions in the operations of OVC.

Scott Moccia (project manager), Judy Tack (project sponsor) and Holly Illman (key stakeholder) have also been heavily involved throughout this process and have worked diligently to ensure the project’s success, all the while continuing with their daily responsibilities. We also appreciate the assistance received from the HSC financial services (accounting) team who provided consultation during the design, development and testing phases.

BODYSENSE: Advice and words of wisdom from one dietitian

by @ [BCDairy] News or Article

Learn why one dietitian uses BODYSENSE in her outpatient practice.

BODYSENSE is a life skills program to help people understand and meet their own needs for food, activity, relaxation and peace of mind. Unlike dieting, BODYSENSE focuses on the whole person. And unlike dieting, it is aimed at making people feel better rather than deprived.

In this article, we catch up with dietitian Sharron O’Brien, who has used the BODYSENSE workbook as part of her practice for many years.

What do you like about using BODYSENSE in your practice?

Sharron O’Brien (S.O.):

Everything.

  • It's perfect for the outpatient dietitian, as so many of our patients are overweight along with other issues.
  • It does not include any "dieting."
  • It's an amazing self-learning module and it is better than anything like it I've looked at in Canada or U.S.
  • It's lots of fun, and people get to know and support each other [in group sessions].
  • It's very well written, with lots of down-to-earth sayings and information.
  • It's very simple—often people think too good to be true—then they are surprised, as I was, to lose weight on the BODYSENSE Day Schedule alone (my preferred calendar).
  • It relieves the dietitian from having to say the same old thing one-on-one to people who want the dietitian to do all the work.
  • BODYSENSE puts the responsibility on the clients, who are often pleasantly surprised that change is easier than they thought, as long as it's gradual.
  • It concentrates on positive reinforcement.
  • It concentrates on lifestyle for the rest of your life—for permanent weight change.
  • It solves the mystery for many people who feel and state they are doing everything "right": they have to figure out themselves where the weight is coming from.

What do your clients get out of using this resource?

S.O.

  • A lifetime of getting away from yo-yo dieting with all its risks.
  • Vastly improved nutrition and activity.
  • True nutrition information provided by a dietitian.
  • Lots of fun once we get to know each other.
  • A book that they can go through several times on their own after taking the class, which helps to change habits permanently.
  • A lot more self-esteem, from positive reinforcement, group support and introducing topics like stress management.
  • Understanding that small changes result in permanent weight loss, and they don't have to suffer.
  • Group support is paramount, so I try not to talk too much after the first few classes

What would your advice be to outpatient or private practice dietitians about using this resource?

S.O.

  • If you are dealing with overweight people, this is so much better for them [than other programs aimed to help people lose weight].
  • You don't have to spend mind-numbing hours talking one-on-one with people who don't really want to change. (At least half of my clients started one-on-one, so they do get personalized suggestions, but the real work is for them to do, not the dietitian.)
  • We only charged $25 for the whole course, as Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) covered it. But, I think more private practice dietitians should offer this and charge more, based on competitive pricing.
  • It's really lots of fun. It really helps people in the long run, even if it gets them away from the dieting industry.
  • Many of our patients went on after BODYSENSE to take more courses on self-improvement or activity—it really inspired them!!
  • It's really simple to run, just concentrate on the workbook, and try to discourage people going off topic. It's easy to get distracted by clients who are trying to get more attention, or to avoid the work. Just keep going back to the book.
  • People who are struggling should be encouraged to come for a one-on-one session.

Interested in using BODYSENSE in your practice? Check out Top Tips for Running Group Sessions. Contact a nutrition educator at nutrition@bcdairy.ca to learn more.

Make your own Outdoor Bug Spray

by bodyofhealth @ Body of Health

‘Tis the season for camping, swimming, boating, biking, hiking and BUGS! Don’t let these little pests ruin your fun. Make your own natural bug repellent that you can feel safe using on your whole family! We all know that bug bites can be a real pain, yet itchy bumps or even viruses spread by blood-sucking pests are not the end of our worries when fighting off summer bugs. Beware of DEET; the compound originally created for military use that is present in most insect repellents, and has the potential for many negative and toxic effects. There have been medical cases linking DEET to dermal and neurological problems, as well as brain damage and generalized seizures. Some even believe that insect repellents with less, but still present amounts of DEET can be even more harmful. These repellents contain more alcohol, which subsequently allows the DEET that is present to be more easily absorbed by the skin. Children are especially at risk and can more easily come to harm from DEET. Their skin is more susceptible to absorbing chemicals, and their nervous systems are still developing. Almost all reported cases of significant toxicity and side effects from DEET have been in children. Accidental ingestion of DEET is also very dangerous, and an accident that young children are more susceptible to. Regardless of the number and severity of reported cases regarding DEET, it is inherently harmful to the human body. We therefore suggest fighting summer pests the natural way by creating your own natural bug repellent. Lemon-scented oils, conifer oils, and aromatics such as basil and lavender all have repellent properties when it comes to insects. However, they need to be combined in the proper quantities with a base. Therefore we have simplified things for you and have created a highly effective and simple to make home-made bug repellent recipe! Outdoor Spray Recipe Directions In a spray bottle combine: 1 cup witch hazel 15 drops citronella oil 15 drops lemongrass oil 10 drops lavender oil *Shake Well Before Use   Visit Body of Health to pick up all of the ingredients you need to make your own insect repellent. When you purchase all of the ingredients listed, you will receive 10% off. View our promotions page

    Sunscreen Safety

by bodyofhealth @ Body of Health

Stock up for summer, the cottage and camping; use safe sunscreen to protect your family.                 It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when it comes to selecting a safe, ecofriendly, healthy sunscreen that will protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays and not leave you looking like you’re eager for Halloween to get here!  In your search, it’s important to note that there are two different types of sunscreen:  “Physical Barrier” or mineral sunscreens, and “Chemical Barrier” sunscreens.  Physical Barrier sunscreens create a reflective surface on the skin that disperses the UV light off of the skin’s surface.  Chemical Barrier sunscreens contain chemicals that can absorb the UV light before it damages the skin. When you see a “Broad Spectrum” sunscreen it means that there are multiple active chemical ingredients working synergistically to absorb the UV light.  This however, means that there are multiple health hazards associated with this chemical exposure. Here are some ingredients to avoid when selecting a sunscreen: Retinyl Palmitate – when exposed to sunlight this ingredient may actually accelerate skin damage and tumour growth Oxybenzone – a hormone disrupter that has also been linked to lower birth weights Octinoxate (a.k.a. OCM and octyl methoxycinnamate) – another hormone disrupter and estrogen mimicker linked to changes in thyroid functioning Diethanolamine and Triethanolamine (DEA, TEA) – reacts with preservatives to cause nitrosamine, a known carcinogen Benzophenone – highly allergenic Homosalate – along with being a hormone disrupter this chemical can break down into more toxic products Parabens – estrogen mimicker along with interference of male reproductive functions   When picking a sunscreen there are two safe and effective ingredients that you need to look for: Zinc oxide and Titanium oxide.  These are the “active” ingredients contained in physical barrier/mineral sunscreens.  These contain nanoparticles that cannot absorb through the skin, but if inhaled they can enter the bloodstream through the lungs.  Inhalation of these nanoparticles happens when you use a sunscreen that is in the form of a spray or aerosol.  Nanoparticles are what result when you break down zinc oxide and titanium oxide into small particles that will not be seen on the body, giving you a sunscreen that does not appear white on the skin.  At Body of Health we have spray mineral sunscreens that are nanoparticle free such as The Green Beaver Company’s Mineral Sunscreen Spray, which is not white and does not leave a sticky pasty residue on the skin. Remember that your skin is a permeable barrier that absorbs whatever you put on it.  If it is chemicals, these chemicals end up circulating through your bloodstream and eventually require detoxification/filtering by your liver and kidneys, but not before they have access to your cells causing alterations to your body’s natural chemistry. Whenever in doubt about any of your body care products refer to EWG.org.  They have a very comprehensive database where you can check out the safety of your body products for both your body and the environment. All that said, don’t forget that you also need adequate amounts of Vitamin D to stay healthy, so before you lather on your sunscreen spend a few minutes soaking up this sunshine vitamin! Impact of Bill 148 - Important information for Supervisors of Staff

    by @ OVC Bulletin

One of the many changes arising from Bill 148 is a new requirement for employers who schedule employees to work on a paid public holiday. The new requirement is that an employer who directs an employee to work on a paid public holiday needs to notify the employee in advance, and immediately identify the substitute day that they will receive for working on the day. This arrangement must be documented and the documentation must be retained by the employer as part of its record keeping requirements. This has the effect of changing the University’s practice which previously allowed for employees to effectively “bank their time” to be used at a later date. When such a request is made and an alternate day identified, the documentation must be submitted to ovcsas@uoguelph.ca immediately for record keeping.

In order to comply with these new provisions, the University has created a form to assist supervisors and employees who are, from time to time, required to work on a paid public holiday.

For ease of use, the form is fillable, however it can also be printed off and completed manually.

The form will eventually be posted on the HR website and is currently posted on the OVC Shared Administrative Services website however we are circulating it now given that Family Day will quickly be upon us.

If there are any questions, please refer to HR Policy 502 or email ovcsas@uoguelph.ca

BODYSENSE: Top tips for running group sessions

by @ [BCDairy] News or Article

Learn how one dietitian has successfully incorporated BODYSENSE into her practice

BODYSENSE is a life skills program to help people understand and meet their own needs for food, activity, relaxation and peace of mind. Unlike dieting, BODYSENSE focuses on the whole person. And unlike dieting, it is aimed at making people feel better rather than deprived.

The workbook includes 12 modules to practice new skills, such as regular eating, stress management and establishing an exercise routine.

In this article, we catch up with Sharron O’Brien, RD, who has used the BODYSENSE workbook as the basis for group sessions.

How many sessions do you usually run for your groups? How long are your sessions?

     Sharron O’Brien (S.O)

    • I suggest 12 sessions over three months, so that people can miss a session without worry, and have time to make and talk about many changes.
    • I advise them that this is a self-determined work book, that they should go through many times, first with the dietitian.
    • Each session is one hour. About half of the time is used to share how the last week went, and half to talk about the "homework" for the coming week.
    • I think it's really important to have the Entry Phase [workbook section] as one class and the Regular Eating [module] as a separate class.
    • I also break the Action Against Overeating and the Hunger Exercise into two sessions since they are both so great. (Note: these two exercises are in one module, but Sharron is suggesting they are worth separating.)
    • I offer one-on-one counselling at no extra charge and allow people to repeat BODYSENSE at no extra charge within the same 12 months.
    • I send an email to those who give me their contact info after each class. I include e-copies of handouts and updates on the class, as a reminder, and especially for anyone who missed the class.

How many people do you find is ideal for a group session?

    S.O.

    • The ideal group size is about 12 to 15 people. It’s always good to register more to start with to account for any attrition.
    • We only charge for the class after the first night, since the no-shows still demand a refund if you try to charge them ahead of time.
    • People who repeat the class found it really helped.
    • Once we offered evening classes, the most popular time was 5:30 to 6:30

Interested in teaching BODYSENSE? Check out BODYSENSE: Advice and Words of Wisdom, where we learn about the benefits to clients and dietetic practice by using this resource. Contact a nutrition educator at nutrition@bcdairy.ca to learn more.

Recombinant production of omega-3 fatty acids by probiotic E scherichia coli Nissle 1917 | FEMS Microbiology Letters | Oxford Academic

    OUP Academic

Omega-3 fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have beneficial effects on human health. The probiotic bacterium Escherichia coli Nissle is unable to produce either EPA or DHA. Escherichia coli Nissle was transformed with the pfBS-PS plasmid carrying the EPA/DHA gene cluster, previously isolated from a marine bacterium. The transgenic E. coli Nissle produced EPA when grown at 10ºC (16.52 ± 1.4 mg g−1 cell dry weight), 15ºC (31.36 ± 0.25 mg g−1 cell dry weight), 20ºC (13.71 ± 2.8 mg g−1 cell dry weight), 25ºC (11.33 ± 0.44 mg g−1 cell dry weight) or 30ºC (0.668 ± 0.073 mg g−1 cell dry weight). Although DHA was also produced at all these temperatures, it comprised less than 0.2% of total extracted fatty acids. Transcriptomic analysis using Reverse Transcription qPCR showed upregulation of the entire gene cluster in E. coli Nissle. Among EPA/DHA genes, pfaB, pfaC and pfaD were overexpressed (expression ratio of 181.9, 39.86 and 131.61, respectively) as compared to pfaA (expression ratio of 3.40) and pfaE (expression ratio of 4.05). The EPA/DHA-producing probiotic E. coli Nissle may be used as a safe, alternative and economic source for the industrial and pharmaceutical production of EPA and DHA.
