Naturopathic Support for Breast Cancer

by Dr. Belinda Capera, MD (Colombia), ND. @ Marine Drive Naturopathic

Breast cancer Breast cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer according to American Cancer Society. The chance of getting breast cancer increases with age as well as genetic mutations, which contribute to 5-10% of cases. Other risk factors include exposure to radiation, early onset of menstruation (due to the increased exposure to circulating estrogen), alcohol use, obesity and sedentary lifestyle. Smoking, eating charred red meat regularly, and exposure to pesticides, PCBs and other pollutants also increase the risk. In the early stages, breast cancer is typically asymptomatic. The first symptom usually is a lump noticed in the breast tissue. With time, other symptoms may be present such as breast discharge, nipple inversion, an “orange peel’ appearance to the skin of the breast, and fatigue. In advanced stages, the nipple may change in appearance, and bleeding and discharge may be present. The diagnosis is usually made through a screening mammogram, or an examination by a health-care practitioner, although a breast self-exam is often the first chance to recognize abnormal breast tissue. Suspicious areas need to be biopsied. The tumor is evaluated for its grade of differentiation, proliferative activity and status regarding estrogen receptors (ER), progesterone receptors (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptors. All of these factors are considered for treatment and prognosis. Conventional treatment usually includes surgery, followed by radiation. Chemotherapy and hormone therapy are used in metastatic or advanced breast cancer. As a Naturopathic Physician, my goal is to support all the above conventional treatments or offer options to the patient that are evidence-based, all by working along side their other healthcare providers. Some of the benefits of Naturopathic Medicine for Breast Cancer include: Naturopathic support before and after surgery helps to minimize complications and accelerate the recovery. Support may include dietary suggestions and recommendations for nutrient support.   During Chemotherapy, a Naturopathic Physician’s advice may prevent negative herb/nutrient-drug interactions, maintain nutritional status,  improve quality of life and minimize side effects and at the same time, improve efficacy, preventing discontinuation or cycle delays. There is a chance Naturopathic Medicine may reduce chemotherapy dose, increase chemosensitivity, prevent drug resistance and long-term sequelae.   Patients undergoing hormone therapy may need help managing adverse effect such as hot flashes, and preventing undesired interactions with herbs and supplements.   Naturopathic support is made through different personalized modalities such as acupuncture, biological medicine, gemmotherapy, herbal and botanical preparations, lifestyle counselling and hydrotherapy. There are many physical symptoms that patient’s experience during cancer treatment, such as changes in appetite, mood, sleep patterns and sense of well-being. As a Naturopathic Physician, my goal is to support you through current treatment practices and evidence-based approaches to that you may have the best outcome possible for you. Dr. Belinda Capera, MD (Colombia), ND. Call the clinic 604-929-5772 to book your appointment with Dr. Capera Belinda

5 Tips On Assisting Your Digestion Over The Holidays

by Dr. Elizabeth Miller @ Marine Drive Naturopathic

There is always a time for occasional indulgences, however over the holidays it is easy for these indulgences to quickly add up through multiple holiday parties and family dinners. Have you recently been diligently restoring your gut health, or excluding problematic foods from your diet? Don’t let the holidays derail your hard work! Here are 5 tips on keeping those holiday pants feeling good!   Digestive enzymes. You can always find this digestive aid tucked into my purse. Taken directly before a meal, digestive enzymes assist your body in breaking down food, preventing inflammation further down the digestive tract. This can be useful for a large meal, or when under stress as your body won’t be producing its own adequate digestive juices. Don’t want to take a supplement? Try finishing your meal with papaya or pineapple for a dessert option as they naturally contain digestive enzymes. Alternatively, you can start your meal with a bitter food, such as a bitter salad, that will help stimulate your body’s own digestive juices.   Bring your own favorite dessert. If you have been following an elimination diet it can be difficult to stay on track if there isn’t food compliant with your diet at an event. In such a case, bring your own favorite alternative recipe such as these black bean brownies (https://minimalistbaker.com/vegan-gluten-free-black-bean-brownies/https://minimalistbaker.com/vegan-gluten-free-black-bean-brownies/). It is likely that someone else at the dinner will be grateful for your alternative dish too!   Mindful eating. Mindful eating habits are inevitably at the root of healthy food choices. Take a quick moment of reflection before you fill your plate to start with the greens, proteins, fibers, and health fats. This will fill you up and balance your blood sugars to help prevent cravings throughout the evening.   Smart drinking. Holiday cheer quite often means an extra beer, or some heavy drinks such as eggnog or specialty coffees. Opt for lower sugar drink choices such as this cranberry lime vodka soda from Angela Liddon author of Oh She Glows. (http://ohsheglows.com/2013/11/29/my-go-to-holiday-cocktail-quick-easy-festive-and-low-in-sugar/). My all time favorite swap for alcohol is kombucha, or an evening digestive tea.   Get outside! You may not have time to hit the gym or your favorite class, but there is usually a way to find time for some activity. Family time can be enjoyed over a post-dinner neighborhood stroll. We are fortunate to have the mountains as our backyard, so getting out into them for a family activity like snowshoeing is not only good time, but will reduce stress and help get your digestion moving!   Find yourself feeling slow, bloated, achy, fatigued, or irritable? These are all common symptoms of an over taxed liver. January is just around the corner making it a perfect time to set up an appointment for a New Years reset!   Happy Holidays!   Elizabeth Miller, ND http://elizabethmiller.ca

Try a cupping treatment during this holiday season!

by Cathryn Coe, ND, owner, MDNC @ Marine Drive Naturopathic

The benefits of cupping treatment include local pain relief and muscle relaxation. Cupping improves overall health by removing the energy blockages that TCM practitioners identify as barriers to the flow of healthy energy or qi. For athletes, cupping may help increase blood flow to a particular muscle region or help reduce pain. Numerous athletes from the Olympics in Rio 2016 used cupping. This was easily seen by circular markings on some of the U.S. swim team members. A therapeutic cupping treatment involves warming and placing cups, usually made of glass, on the skin. By warming the air within the cup, a vacuum is created, and when it is applied to the skin, the tissue is drawn up into the cup. This increases the blood flow, loosens the fascia or connective tissue, and is thought to stimulate healing. It is similar to the way deep tissue massage can be used to break up scar tissue and reduce pain. Treat yourself a special gift in this holiday season. You will totally like and enjoy it! Acorn Squash Holidays Season Healthy Recipe

by Jessica Mosiuk @ Marine Drive Naturopathic

This warm and comforting Orange Roasted Acorn Squash with Bacon, Spinach and Pomegranate dish is the perfect balance of sweet and salty with an unexpected crunch from the pomegranate. It makes a great alternative to the usual potato or bread-laden dishes at Christmas dinner without sacrificing taste or enjoyment. Acorn squash, though still considered a starchy vegetable, have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, as well as anti-diabetic and insulin-regulating properties. Surprisingly, it is also a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids despite being a low in fat food. It is a vegetable that should be purchased as organic as much as possible as it is found to have a higher amount of pesticides than most vegetables that have a non-porous skin. Ingredients 1 acorn squash, peeled and cubed  salt to taste 4 butter 2 orange juice, fresh squeezed 8 slices bacon, thick-cut 2 large handfuls spinach pomegranate seeds Instructions Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Place cubed acorn squash in a mixing bowl. Put orange juice into a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer. Add butter. Melt butter, stirring to combine. Add orange zest and remove from heat. Toss squash with orange butter sauce. Distribute squash evenly onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt. Place in oven and bake for 20 minutes or until tender. While squash is roasting, cook bacon pieces in a skillet over medium heat. When bacon has finished cooking, pour out most of the grease but leave about 1 tbsp or less for wilting the spinach. Add spinach and stir until wilted. Remove from heat and place to the side until squash is ready. Place roasted squash back into the mixing bowl and toss with bacon and spinach. Sprinkle with pomegranate seeds. Jessica Mosiuk, joyfulbelly.ca

Healing Eczema with Food

by Jessica Mosiuk @ Marine Drive Naturopathic

Eczema is a very common skin condition that causes the skin to become inflamed, irritated, dry and itchy. The most common treatment is through topical steroid creams. This may provide temporary relief but does not address the root cause of eczema and flare-ups will continue to worsen as time goes on. Foods to avoid Because eczema is an inflammatory based condition, foods that promote inflammation should be avoided. Dairy Dairy, particularly from cow’s milk, contains large protein molecules that are difficult to digest. This is the first food group that should be eliminated for eczema as it is the most common culprit. Some people are able to reintroduce sheep and goat milk in small amounts after an elimination period but if your eczema is not clearing up dairy should be avoided completely. There are lots of choices available now for non-dairy milk and milk products that make dairy-free living easy. Almond, cashew and coconut milks make great replacements. Sugar Besides being pro-inflammatory, a high sugar diet contributes to dysbiosis of the gut microbiome. Dysbiosis is a catch-all term for an alteration of the gut microbiome. The gut is home to trillions of bacteria, collectively referred to as the “gut microbiome”. These microorganisms are essential for good health because they take care of the immune system, synthesize vitamins and minerals, convert inactive hormones to active hormones and keep your digestive system healthy. With a high sugar diet, a yeast organism called Candida Albicans can overgrow and cause eczema and digestive symptoms like gas and bloating. Up to 70% of people with eczema have Candida overgrowth. While alternative sweeteners to refined sugar like honey and maple syrup are a better choice, it is still important to not go overboard with them. Processed Foods Food dyes, additives or preservatives like BHA and BHT are found in processed foods like candy, margarine and junk food. Not only are they pro-inflammatory, they are also found to be carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting. Check out the Environmental Working Groups list of Dirty Dozen Additives to avoid. Fried Foods Fried foods (along with processed oils like soy, corn, cottonseed and canola) are not good for anyone’s health, not just eczema sufferers. It is important to consume healthy fats though. Keep reading to find out which fats you should be eating. Gluten Alongside dairy, gluten is a common allergen that is found to contribute to eczema symptoms. Gluten is a protein found in grains like wheat, rye, barley and spelt. Focus instead on non-glutinous grains like quinoa, millet, buckwheat and amaranth. Oats are technically gluten-free but there is a lot of cross contamination in the processing process so be sure to look for oats that are labelled “gluten-free”. Other Common Food Sensitivities Food sensitivities are problematic with eczema because they can result in a condition called “leaky gut”. When the integrity of the intestinal barrier is compromised from repeated exposure to food allergens or sensitivities, it becomes permeable meaning undigested food particles and proteins can pass through and leak into the blood stream. This provokes the immune system which considers these undigested food particles and proteins to be foreign invaders. So, every time we eat this same food the immune system is going to attack it. This results in a chronic inflammation cycle which can show up as eczema symptoms. The most common food sensitivities are dairy, gluten, corn, soy and eggs. It is possible to have a sensitivity to any food that you consume often (I’m seeing more and more almond sensitivities!). To find out if you have food sensitivities, you can get a blood test through our clinic or do an elimination diet. Bonus: Body Products Most common store-bought soaps contain ingredients that aggravate eczema. Watch out for these ingredients: Sodium Laurel Sulfate Fragrance Coconut Diethanolamide Dextran sodium sulfate Okay but what do I eat? Healthy Fat They key here besides an unprocessed, whole foods diet that avoids the foods mentioned above is a good dose of healthy fat every day. Omega 3 fats will help reduce inflammation: be sure to include hemp seed, flax seed, walnuts and their oils. Be careful with your cooking oils- avocado and coconut oils withstand higher heats so are your best choices for cooking. Never cook with flax or hemp oil. Nuts, seeds and avocado are a great way to get a dose of healthy fat along with fiber. Probiotic-rich Foods Probiotics are the good bacteria that keep your gut microbiome robust and healthy. Foods to incorporate are sauerkraut, kimchi and pickles. Be sure to look for these foods in the refrigerated section of the grocery store and check that they do not contain vinegar. Real fermented foods are fermented with salt, only. While dairy yoghurt is off the menu, there are lots of non-dairy yoghurts available. Be sure to choose one that does not have added sugar. Kombucha has gained popularity for being a probiotic-rich beverage. While this is true, it is not the best choice for eczema sufferers as it is fermented with yeast and sugar: not a great combination is yeast overgrowth is present. Fiber Fiber is important for many aspects of good health but it is especially important in keeping the gut microbiome healthy. Simply put: bacteria eat fiber and having a variety of fiber in the diet keeps them healthy and robust. Research shows that the gut microbiome starts to improve just 72 hours after eating more fiber in your diet. Where do we get fiber? Non-glutinous grains like millet, quinoa and oats, nuts and seeds, vegetables and fruit. The more variety, the better. Jessica Mosiuk, Registered Holistic Nutritionist. Please call the clinic 604-929-5772 to book your appointment with Jessica!

5 Ways Acupuncture Helps Create A Lasting New Year Resolution

by Youna Kim R.Ac. @ Marine Drive Naturopathic

5 Ways Acupuncture Helps Create  A  Lasting  New Year Resolution Happy New Year! As the New Year begins, many of us are making resolutions, and hoping to achieve goals. But, it isn’t always easy. How can we stay determined until the goals are reached? How can we have strong will-power to manage our body and mind for 2018. Well, Acupuncture can assist you in the direction of your goals. Acupuncture gives you energy and rejuvenation that will help you keep your new year’s promise because of the following reasons; Promoting Qi production and circulation Qi is life energy, and is constantly moving in our body. In the human body, there are twelve primary channels and eight extra ordinary vessels, as well as numberless small collaterals that Qi runs through, as water runs in a river. When Qi is abundant and, flows in good order in the its pathways, the person feels his/her body is lighter and more energized. In contrast, when Qi is stagnated, or even stops in a certain area, the person feels heaviness and pain in the body. With the pain and heaviness in the body, we don’t want to move, and fail to achieve our new year goal as a result. In addition, Qi and blood are closely linked. When Qi moves, blood follows it. When Qi stops, blood also stops. Therefore, Qi circulation is important for blood circulation in the body. When we have sufficient blood circulation, we can keep good health. Acupuncture assists Qi to flow well, and makes the body feel fresh. It will give you more energy to carry out your new years plan. Balancing emotions and clarifying the mind In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the body and mind are intimately related, and affect each other through Qi. When the body is healthy, the mind is clear. When the mind has a negative emotion, the body becomes sick. An example of the body and mind connection is seen through the relationship between the internal organs, and the five basic emotions. When there is stagnation of Qi in the liver for example, the person easily feels anger, and becomes cranky. Conversely, when a person gets mad, the emotion affects his/her liver negatively. Again, when the lung is weak, the person has a tendency to be more sad and gloomy. Thirdly, when the spleen doesn’t function well, the person suffers from overthinking and insomnia due to endless thinking. Forth, a person who has weak kidney function feels fear more easily, and is tends to be more impatient. As finally, with weakness in the heart, a person can experience mental symptoms such as depression or mania in severe cases. A clear mind comes from balanced emotions, and the good emotions are made from a healthy internal condition. Acupuncture regulates the Qi of the internal organs, and as a result, the emotions. You will experience a clear mind for your 2018’s resolution with acupuncture. Relaxation and deep breathing In ancient Asian folklore, it is believed that the longevity of tortoises’, turtles, is a result of them breathing slower and deeper then other animals. We breathe Qi into our body, and receive energy each moment, and for deeper breathing, we need a relaxed body and mind. When we observe babies, we see they breathe into their lower belly. They breathe deeper because their bodies are more supple and tender. With deep breathing, let’s make ourselves energized for 2018. Acupuncture relieves tensions from your body, and allows it to refill with more fresh energy. Free from pain When we are in pain, we cannot think clearly, as we are hindered by the attention that the pain demands. Getting rid of pain is very important to improve our quality of life. A famous Asian health quote says, “when there is a blockage, pain appears, when there is no blockage, the pain disappears.” This insinuates that lasting pain is created by something that doesn’t flow well. The something is Qi, bio-electric current. As you know already, acupuncture opens the blockage and promotes Qi circulation. Reliving the pain is often the result. Getting strong and confident Many of the acupuncture points are used for strengthen Qi flow in the muscles and bones. For example, acupoint GB34 is one of the gallbladder points. It benefits the sinews and joints, and is one of my favorite points for seniors and people who have declining strength or soreness in their legs. Healthy muscles and bones give us overall strength and confidence. When we can move freely, and with confidence, we can get more out of life, and enjoy the activities we love. Try acupuncture in 2018! Acupuncture will help support you in having a healthy body and clear mind, naturally! 3 ways Naturopathic Medicine can help your child right now!

by Dr Cameron McIntyre @ Marine Drive Naturopathic

As we are fully immersed in our winter season now with the holidays in the rear view mirror, I thought it important to touch on these 3 themes at this time of year: 1. Immune system We are right in the eye of the storm of cold and flu season and some are fairing well while others are falling like dominos in a line. We at MDNC offer a natural immune system booster that comes from Germany. It is an herbal preparation, not a vaccine, and comes in both an injectable and oral form. We have been using this in the clinic for many years with good results. Good preventative medicine or can also be used to pull your child out of a cold state. The other thought to address here is vitamin D status in your child. Vitamin D we often think about for its role in bone health but it plays a key role  in many body systems including the immune system. Low vitamin D status can cause poor immune function resulting in getting sick at the drop of a hat and staying ill for extended periods of time. Vitamin D testing requires a blood test and so this is something done in house or we can provide a requisition for completion at a local laboratory. A very important piece of information to know if your child is repeatedly ill. It may be a missing piece of the puzzle. 2. Allergies While there is not much happening outside in the way of environmental allergies at this time of year, ongoing issues with undiagnosed food allergies can be a real bear in the system. We are all aware of food allergies that require you or your child to carry an epi- pen for example, but the lesser allergies or food intolerances can be just as pesky to the immune system. I often use the analogy of an army when speaking to parent’s about their child’s immune system. There is only a certain number of troops in this So, if 50% of their troops are busy “food fighting”, there is only a remaining 50% to deal with everything else, including colds and flu. These lesser allergies and intolerances are often the cause of fragile immune systems in kids. Proper testing via a blood test (a finger prick is all that is required) will determine if this is an issue for your child and allow you to make dietary corrections to help get their systems on the right track. 3. Sleep Becoming a bigger and bigger issue for kids these days. I am sure you are all aware that children are becoming hooked on electronic devices at younger and younger ages. These screens seem to be a living appendage for some kids – teens especially. The screens of these devices emit “blue light” which can zap the energy of our mitochondria (our cell’s internal batteries) as well as alter brain wave function. Thus kids try to settle into bed but their brains are still in “go mode” from all of their screen time. This delays sleep schedules, alters proper sleep patterns and leaves both kids and parents in a lousy mood in the morning. Poor sleep compromises all body systems but really impacts immune function and mood. Hence with lousy sleep, your kids are “sick and tired” and slipping in their performance at school as well. While it is up to us as parents to properly regulate screen time for our kids, some natural sleep aids may be required to help “reboot” the sleep patterns in your kids. Natural supplements like magnesium, melatonin, and theanine along with herbals like valerian, passionflower and lavender may all be considered in cases where kid’s sleep has been unfortunately “zapped”. If any of these themes call to you as action items with your kids, I urge you to act sooner than later. A strong immune system, great dietary habits, and proper sleep go along way to insuring a smooth ride through this cold and flu season and beyond. Please contact the clinic at 604-929-5772 with any questions or to book an appointment. In good health, Dr Cameron McIntyre, ND

Discover why Myers’ Cocktail is our most popular IV Therapy!

by Dr. Jordana Aziz @ Marine Drive Naturopathic

Did you know, that Intravenous Therapy was pioneered by Dr. John Myers, thus the reason behind the formulation which is commonly referred to as the “Myers’ Cocktail”? The Myers Cocktail, generally consists of a blend of water-soluble vitamins, and minerals administered by an intravenous drip. The reason why this delivery system is superior to any other form of nutrient delivery, is because it enables Doctors to treat vitamin, mineral and other nutrient deficiencies directly by infusing the blood with nutrients, essentially bathing the cells in antioxidants – as well as being the most effective way to re-hydrate the body. Numerous conditions have been effectively treated through the use of IV therapy, some of them include:  Asthma, Headaches and Migraines, Cardiovascular disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Sinusitis and Rhinitis, Dehydration, Immune system depletion, Weight loss, Cognitive function, Anxiety, Fatigue, even macular Degeneration . “Magnesium, Calcium, B vitamins, and Vitamin C, has been found to be effective against acute asthma attacks, migraines, fatigue (including chronic fatigue syndrome), fibromyalgia, acute muscle spasm, upper respiratory tract infections, chronic sinusitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis, cardiovascular disease, and other disorders.” (Altern Med Rev 2002;7(5):389-403)  Alan R. Gaby M.D.) At Marine Drive Naturopathic Clinic, Dr. Jordana Aziz will create an IV protocol designed specifically for you.  Delivering high doses of Vitamins, Minerals and Amino Acids used for many reasons, such as increasing your cardiovascular and athletic performance and recuperation from sporting events, to just an uplifting dose of nutrients to start your week off properly.
