Vaccination and trusting ‘authorities’??

by LoreneB @ Healthy Solutions – Natural Path Remedies Research Blog

I get so many articles detailing ongoing research about the devastating side effects and life long immune problems being created by our ever-increasing onslaught of vaccinations. Since I first studied the vaccination issues in 1984, when pregnant with our  daughter, I get daily confirmation that we made the right decision to question the status quo. Probiotics in Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection: A Systematic Review and Evidence Synthesis of Benefits and Risks | Open Forum Infectious Diseases | Oxford Academic

OUP Academic

People living with human immunodeficiency virus frequently use dietary supplements, including probiotics, but concern exists about ingesting live organisms. We performed a systematic review of the benefits of probiotics and a meta-analysis of sepsis risk. We undertook a protocol-driven, comprehensive review to identify all relevant studies, assess their quality, and summarize the evidence. Of 2068 references, 27 were analyzed. The data suggest possible benefits for CD4 count, recurrence or management of bacterial vaginosis, and diarrhea management. We examined randomized, controlled studies explicitly assessing sepsis in any patient population, and we found zero cases of supplement-associated bacteremia or fungemia in 39 randomized controlled trials comprising 9402 subjects. The estimated number needed to harm is 7369 in Bayesian approach (95% credible interval: 1689, ∞), which should reassure clinicians. No or mild adverse effects were reported. Longer duration studies investigating different individual and mixed strains for plausible indications are needed to establish best practices.

Top Ten Beauty Products

by Chelsea Hohnstein @ Blog - Grove Health Supplements & Foods

With our green beauty event approaching I thought I would share with you my top ten beauty care items!!

10) 100% Pure body wash

These come in a variety of scents and they smell divine. Many natural skin care products still have a "herb" scent to them but these guys have mastered the scent factor!!

9) Everyone Organic Coconut Lemon Body Lotion:

This is an economical buy and is great for the whole family and is light enough to use on the whole body, including the face and hands.

8) Suki Balancing Toner

I love the entire balancing line from Suki, because my skin loves to break out! The Suki skin care line calms the redness and size of breakouts, and my skin is much more clear.

7) 100% Pure Yuzo and Pomelo Shampoo and Conditioner

I have searched high and low for a natural shampoo and conditioner that works well for my hair and these are perfect. When I was using it (I just ran out and figured I better use up some other stuff at home), I had so many compliments on how shiny and soft my hair was. I can't wait to try the Honey and a Coconut Restorative Shampoo after the inevitable sun damage!

6) Pacifica perfume:

I can't lie. I still love my drugstore perfumes but I have reserved them for special occasions only. When we think about all the chemicals we spray onto our body and into the environment every day, it's a little overwhelming. The smell of the Island Vanilla perfume from Pacifica is so nice, and it comes in a roll-on that can be tucked away in your purse. The roll-on perfumes also come in a variety of scents so that you can choose your preference!

5) Gabriel nail polish:

These are amazing 5-free nail polishes. If you've ever tried natural nail polish before you might remember having to re-apply every couple of days. I have found with Gabriel that I can wear them for at least two weeks without any chips-and that's without a top or bottom coat (I got almost a month when I used a top coat). I even went to Hawaii and walked in the sand for ten days and came home with the nail polish almost the same as when I left! They come in a variety of beautiful colors and they are affordable!!

4) Evelyn Iona Ginger Glow Bronzer, Val Lip Gloss, Gel eyeliner, Concealer:

I'm cheating a LOT and using four in one category, BUT I love the way these four compliment each other. I just recently tried the Ginger Bronzer and I am SO happy with it. My skin isn't terrible but it's far from perfect and I find the bronzer makes my complexion look much more smooth, and does not have that fake, shimmery appearance to it. The concealer does an awesome job of covering blemishes and evening out my worst areas of scarring. A little goes a long way..my last container lasted me four months of fairly regular use (I only use concealer when I have blemishes..which lately is still pretty regularly).

I have always loved the Val lipgloss because it pairs well with anything so I don't have to do any work to match it to my outfit. It is moisturizing, not sticky and doesn't stain the lips, so you don't look like you ate a jar of ravioli when it wears off.

The eyeliner is awesome if you can master the application with a brush. It lasts, which is amazing because a lot of natural eyeliners require a re-application. This eyeliner survived camping and some pretty hardcore quadding without budging. On days that need eyeliner, this is without question my go to.

3) AnneMarie Borlind Foundation:

This foundation has a very luxurious appeal to it, and it holds up to the gorgeous packaging. I use the anti-aging because I like to have a bit more coverage and I find it lasts throughout the day without re-application and covers up all the redness on my skin.

2) Routine deodorant:

I have a confession. I've never tried Routine's deodorant because I still have to use up what I have at home. BUT I'm mentioning it here on behalf of all the customers who have had some pretty unreal reviews on the product. In fact, we recently just ordered 144 units which is more than triple the size of our original order because it sold so well and we heard such great feedback on how well it works! People who have always used regular deodorant find this product is effective right away against odor, even after a hot day or the gym. Some of our customers have said that since using it, they only have to apply it every second day and it is still effective.

1) Viva Amaze Gel Exfoliant:

I don't use this product regularly, BUT I do like to splurge on it once in a while.  This is a gentle exfoliant that is very effective. I can't describe how well it works and give it justice; it really is a product you have to try for yourself. But, you can do that our Green Beauty Day August.21st because we will be demonstrating the product in-store, and we might even be able to sneak some samples to you to take home:)

Back To School

by Chelsea Hohnstein @ Blog - Grove Health Supplements & Foods

It’s summertime, which means in retail world it’s time to start thinking about back to school! There are a number things that parents need to consider to provide their kids with the best possible nutrition, and sometimes that requires supplements. Here is a list of three things to consider when prepping your child for back to school.

1. Omega-3’s

Omega-3’s are polyunsaturated fats found predominantly in fish, though they are available through plant based foods such as walnuts, chia seeds, camelina oil, and flaxseeds .Fish are the optimum source of Omega-3’s as the fish have already converted the ALA into forms usable for the body.  Though there are relatively few studies to choose from that focus specifically on children, there are a handful that suggest that children with higher amounts of Omega-3’s in their diet have less obstacles when it comes to attention, learning and behaviours. Considering that the sources of Omega-3 are from foods that many kids resist eating, a supplement may be valuable, especially if you’ve noticed your child struggling in any of these areas.

I’ve included some links to some information so you can read on this subject a little further:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21961774

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/115/5/1360

2. Probiotics

  • In terms of the research world, probiotics are still a fairly new concept, so there is conflicting science on the benefits of probiotics. One of the limitations is that there are SO many different strains of bacteria, each with a different job, and in order to determine a specific strains benefits there is a lot of narrowing down to do when trying to match a strain with a “condition”.

What we DO know so far is that probiotics offer benefits for children with constipation or diarrhea, allergies and eczema. There is also a study linked below that suggests that supplementing with Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55730  resulted in fewer days absent from daycare and less antibiotic use, and we can use that information from daycare setting and extrapolate that to a school setting as well.

Ongoing research is being done to determine their efficacy for improving immunity, reducing duration of upper respiratory infections and even for mood and behaviour. There is evidence suggesting that children who were formula fed or born by Cesarean can also benefit from supplementing with probiotics.

Probiotics and Child Care Centers

3. Multivitamin

Though I am not one of those individuals who believes that all children should be on a multivitamin I do see their merit for the parent of a picky eater. A multivitamin is great to fill in some dietary gaps to ensure your child has an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals. It is very important that parents do not rely on a multivitamin as the only source of nutrients. There are a variety of multivitamins available for children to take, so make sure to chat with your health food associate to determine which multivitamin would be best for your child.

This is certainly not an extensive list of supplements that are advantageous to children’s health, however it is a great start, and I can imagine most of your kids don’t want to take much more than that! Enjoy the rest of your summer everyone:)

Buying Quality Supplements

by Chelsea Hohnstein @ Blog - Grove Health Supplements & Foods

I have been purchasing supplements for Simply Health for quite a few years,  and I am also doing a lot of ordering for Grove Health Supplements and Foods. Despite my time in the industry it can still be overwhelming to sort through the vast amount of supplements that are available to us, and select quality products.

I thought I would share with you some things I've learned that will make it easier to decipher what's worth spending your money on, and what quite frankly, is not.

THE HIDDEN STUFF:

1) First things first: look at the non-medicinal ingredients. That's where the worst stuff lurks. If you see: titanium dioxide (not harmful in small amounts, but not necessary either), artificial sweeteners (sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame potassium or ace K), or any dyes, put the bottle down. None of those things are required to be included in your supplements, and more than anything it speaks to the integrity of the company that you are purchasing from.

Note: In Canada, non-medicinal ingredients are required by law to be written on the label. This means there are things you should expect to see, such as what the capsule is made out of (usually gelatin or vegetable cellulose), and what the machines are lubricated with during the encapsulation process (magnesium stearate). If the capsule has an enteric coating, its ingredients must be labeled on the bottle as well. If you do not want any of these non-medicinal ingredients, your only other option is a powder or liquid.

Note #2: Magnesium stearate does have some controversy surrounding its use (mostly that it can slow the absorption of your supplements; not necessarily in relation to toxicity), but it's rare to find a capsule that doesn't have it. I promise that I will be the first to bring in supplements without it if we ever see anything like that in the near future. But for now rest assured: the amounts present in your capsules are teeny-tiny, and it's more of a concern for those taking handfuls upon handfuls of supplements a day.

*at Grove Health Supplements and Foods I was very diligent about this before I brought any supplements in, so you can be confident there is no weird stuff hiding in any of your supplements.

THE MARKETING:

2) Look at the marketing on the label or on the website. Do you see "miraculous" testimonials directly on the packaging? Are the ingredients hard to find amidst all the propaganda? Even worse, is there a money-back guarantee advertised directly on the packaging?

All of these things are red-flags for me for a number of reasons.

a) Natural health products are intended to get to the root of a person's ailment. They are not designed as targeted drugs. Eg. You can buy Tylenol and know it is for a headache no matter what the cause of the headache, whereas in natural health we would ask a few questions to first determine what's causing the headache. Do you have any food intolerances? Are you eating enough throughout the day? Do you have a sinus condition? Is it muscle tension? You can see that I cannot give everyone the same product for the same reason; that is the antithesis of what we do. If a company offers a money back guarantee, they are obviously more concerned about the sale of the product than ensuring that it is effective for what YOU specifically need it for.

Manufacturers and consumers need to remind themselves that buying supplements is NOT like buying a TV. Sales and purchase of products that effect your health should be done with caution, and a company that operates with that in mind is going to be more likely to provide you with a quality product.

2) In my experience, products that are radically testimonial and marketing driven (I use the word radically because all companies are market-driven; they've got to make money!), are rarely able to provide the science or even strong anecdotal evidence behind their claims.

THE ACTUAL GOODS

3) If you are purchasing anything with minerals in it and you see the word (oxide) in brackets, put it down (unless you plan on using magnesium oxide as a laxative). This is a very poor absorbing form of a nutrient, and very inexpensive for a company to manufacture. Unfortunately this translates into expensive excrement for you. Generally speaking, if you see the word citrate, bisglycinate, or chelate lots, you should be doing alright.

*in terms of multivitamins/multiminerals and single minerals, I was careful to bring in minerals free of oxides (except for magnesium oxide, for its use mentioned above), and all multivitamins are converted (meaning the body has less work to do to make the vitamins useable).

THE COMPANY ETHICS

4) Just because a company is reputable and has a bunch of awesome products does not mean that ALL of their products are awesome. I've seen leaders of quality in the industry cheap out on supplements that branch out their company to make extra profit. But pay attention to the three things above and you will be less likely to get suckered into a companies clever marketing.

I hope these things help you when purchasing your supplements!

PB & J Overnight Oats in a Jar

by Randy Dimitrukowich @ Blog - Grove Health Supplements & Foods

PB & J Overnight Oats in a Jar

  • 1/2 Cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of  your choice)
  • 1/4 Cup quick-cooking oats
  • 1/2 Tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 Teaspoon sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon crunchy peanut butter
  • 1 Tablespoon

In an 8 ounce mason jar, combine the milk, oats, chia seeds, and sugar. Close the jar with the lid, shake the mixture and refrigerate overnight. The next day, take the jar out of the refrigerator, stir in the peanut butter and jam, and serve.

This is a great recipe that you can make your own by adding your own personal touch. The sugar can be substituted with stevia, maple or agave syrup. Or leave it out, and in the morning mix in yogurt and fresh fruit instead of peanut butter and jam.

Recepie inspired by the Skinnytaste cookbook.

Breastfeeding

by Chelsea Hohnstein @ Blog - Grove Health Supplements & Foods

Breastfeeding: not something I gave a lot of thought to until I had my baby. Given that he was very premature, breast milk was extremely important that I get to him, which meant I was attached to a pump for nearly three months. When a baby is born that early there are a number of factors that impair milk supply so I became quite the little milk tracker for three months and learned a ton on the way.

First off: breastfeeding may or may not be for you and that comes down to personal choice. You are the mother and you get to decide what you want to do. I have had so many personal opinions shoved down my throat that I wanted to clarify that this is not an opinion or a forceful explanation of why you should breastfeed. But when your milk supply is low, and you are stressed to the nines because you think you are starving your baby, it may be motivating to have a reminder of some of the benefits of breast milk before you give up altogether.

It's well-known that breastmilk is a complete meal full of protein, fat, carbohydrates, all the vitamins except Vitamin K or enough Vitamin D and minerals. But there are a few lesser-known compounds in milk that have some pretty powerful effects. Here is just a little snapshot of some of these compounds.

1) Lactoferrin is a protein found in whey protein, which comprises a good majority of the type of protein found in human milk, that increases intestinal absorption of iron. Iron is needed to deliver oxygen to the body's cells: including the brain. This is important in any baby but if you happened to have a preemie this becomes even more critical. Lactoferrin also has anti-microbial properties making it important to fight infection. And, though disputed it may have a role in the development of the gut environment and mucosal immune system.

2) Alpha-lactalbumin constitutes about 40% of the protein content of human milk. It is composed of several amino acids, and a high proportion of those amino acids are tryptophan and cysteine. Alpha-lactalbumin has immunostimulatory and anti-bacterial properties making it useful for the prevention of infection and the functioning of baby's immune system. It also aids in the absorption of nutrients, and may even encourage apoptosis which is die-off of unhealthy or unwanted cells.

3) Phospholipids. These are fats with a unique chemical structure making them exceptionally important for cell membranes, especially in the brain and absorption sites in the epithelial cells of the intestine. They are also involved in the development of molecules that play a role in preventing cardiovascular disease, regulating the inflammatory process and creating stress hormones.

Here are some tips that I found really helpful for increasing milk supply:

1) You've read this everywhere-it's supply and demand. So, having a breast pump for directly after and between feedings is extremely helpful. I had the Medela double pump electric (considered one of the best), but the milk retrieved from that paled in comparison to the milk I could get from a hospital grade pump. So, I smartened up and checked my local public health center and sure enough, they had one to rent (for free!). If this is an option to you, then definitely investigate. I resisted going through the trouble of renting this pump and now I deeply regret not doing it sooner.

2) I'd tell you to get lots of sleep but I know that's a ridiculous statement, so instead I'm going to say it this way. Don't avoid sleep. I was meticulously tracking my milk supply and on days when I had less than 5 hours of sleep because I just HAD to stay up to clean my house, my milk supply went down as much as a 1/3!

3)Again, another ridiculous statement: don't get stressed. So, instead: don't seek stress. If you can't take something on just don't. The whole scenario of having a baby in the NICU was stressful for me, but attitude is huge. On days I let negativity get the better of me I saw my milk supply drop almost by half. Seriously. That's huge. It's not possible to avoid stress but take steps to manage it effectively.

4) Increase water consumption and eat well.

If not for maintaining your milk supply but to ensure you have constituents to make the important components of breast milk. Three of the most recommended foods to increase breast milk are brewer's yeast, oatmeal and spinach so I just threw those in a blender each morning with strawberries, yogurt and almond milk and made a smoothie.

5) Mother's milk tea/lactation cookies; I had three different kinds of tea to account for a wider spectrum of galactagogue (milk producing) herbs and drank them all day long. I did find the Earth Angel Baby and Weleda brands to be most effective. Lactation cookies were awesome but were best for a boost and not feasible in terms of the cost for long-term use unless I were to make my own.

6) Supplements/medication:

I did really well with the Mothers Milk Plus Special blend tincture by MotherLove. This is formulated with goats rue for women who may be lacking in some of the developmental aspects of breastfeeding (adoptive parents, parents of preemies or even moms who did not notice a change in breast size throughout pregnancy). For those of you who do not meet that criteria, their regular formula without the goats rue would be fine!

Visit:

http://www.motherlove.com/catalog/breastfeeding

to check out their formulas.

I also take medication because it became a necessity in the NICU, so it may seem I am cheating a little there. But the combination of the herbs and medication works better than one or the other exclusively. If that is something you feel is necessary than have a chat with your doctor to get their advice.

Keep up with your prenatal, and consider an Omega-3 supplement if your doctor okays it. Breastfeeding takes so much energy and it's important to keep obtaining nutrients so you don't over exhaust yourself.

Right now, and permitted by my own doctor I take: Mega Food Baby & Me, Mega Food Blood Builder, Carlson Fish Oil, AOR Advanced B-Complex, CanPrev Vitamin D3 and K2 and I alternate probiotics (currently I have New Roots Probiotic Intensity).

I have to say, I feel really good with and only experience a lot of fatigue if Ryland has kept me up all night. I have yet required a nap (but knowing how important sleep is for milk supply I would make sure to take a nap if I needed it!).

7) I had anxiety that came before pumping (called D-Mer) so it was important for me to chill out to encourage let-down. I had a lavender essential oil for at night (because I find it too strong during the day)  and a roll-on essential oil blend from Pure Wow essential oils called Chill that I put on my wrist before pumping.

8)My last piece of advice is this, though I think it might be common knowledge for most people except me. Just in case it's not: you can do formula AND breastmilk, just make sure you are pumping often to make sure your supply doesn't drop. Your pediatrician will best guide you on dosing before you start.

I hope all this information is useful for breastfeeding momma's or exclusive pumpers!

February is Heart Month

by Chelsea Hohnstein @ Blog - Grove Health Supplements & Foods

The subject of heart health has hit closer to my own heart than I had ever thought it would. On September.13th I delivered  3 months early to my little guy Ryland due to a condition called HELLP syndrome which is a cousin of preeclampsia (hypertension during pregnancy). Because of this, I have been told me that due to conditions and specific parameters that resulted in my son's early birth I have a 6-8 times higher risk of heart disease than someone my age; quite a substantial figure!

Though this should be scary, it's really quite a motivating factor that contributes to my daily decisions. And, for anyone else at high risk for cardiovascular disease, for whatever reason, there are things you can be doing to keep your heart healthy as well! This may also interest you to know that a heart healthy regime also protects connective tissue and keeps inflammation low thereby protecting the joints and skin; and great circulation can keep your brain healthy too!

1) Exercise

One of the most protective things you can do for your heart is physical activity (unless otherwise directed by your doctor). I was advised half an hour, five days a week, but to get back on track after the whole ordeal, and I have started slow and made my goal a half hour of walking/jogging per week and yoga two times per week.

2) Eat a Balanced Diet

Easier said than done! If you need some help with your diet you can contact Hilary with Lettuce Eat and Nourish and she can help you with the specifics. But baseline:

  • Plenty of vegetables and fruit to obtain fiber, and heart-protective antioxidants such as proanthocyanidins from berries, ellagic acid from pomegranate
  •  Limit sugar intake and processed foods and instead opt for high fiber carbohydrate sources
  • Monitor caffeine intake & drink lots of water
  • 4) Eat small, frequent meals and consume a protein with each meal
  • 5) Monitor sodium intake (but don't go extremely overboard because we do need sodium-just not triple the recommended amount!)
  • 6) Get healthy fats. Avocados and olive oil are extremely heart protective, and the American Heart Association recommends at least one serving of oily fish per week.
  • * Get some garlic:)

Here's Why:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/3310019/?i=3&from=/25050296/related

It is important to eat whole foods, and keep your blood sugars stable. When sugars in your blood get to high, your body has no choice but to convert that to triglycerides. Triglycerides are stored fat and are a huge contributing factor to the development of cardiovascular disease...arguably more dangerous than cholesterol levels.

3) Take supplements geared towards heart health such as:

  • Omega-3's to regulate inflammation, and lower blood pressure and triglycerides. If you've ever heard your doctor talk about CRP, that refers to C-reactive protein and it is a marker for inflammation that can have a role in your development of metabolic disease marked by a number of conditions: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, excess fat around the waist and elevated blood sugar.

http://www.m.webmd.com/diet/supplement-guide-omega-3-fatty-acids

  • CoEnzymeQ10

Coenzyme Q10 is found throughout the body, but is most prevalent in cardiac tissue. It has been shown to strengthen the heart and lower blood pressure. It has a role in the delivery of oxygen to the body's cells and it is an antioxidant, thereby reducing damage from free radicals.

If you are on any form of statin drug such as Lipitor or Crestor you should consider taking CoQ10 to hopefully offset some of the side effects of statin drugs.

  • Magnesium:

Magnesium deficiency is considered quite rare by the medical community, but in natural health it is estimated that between 75% and 90% have a deficiency. This is because things like sugar and caffeine deplete magnesium. If you read the symptoms of deficiency of magnesium, many of us have multiples out of that list. Furthermore, there is growing evidence that dietary and supplemental magnesium may prevent cardiovascular calcification which contributes to hardening of the arteries.

  • Probiotics:

Probiotics are really quite intriguing and the more I read about them the more fascinated I am by their roles in our body. I've even read somewhere (though I can't tell you where right now), that the bacteria we have in our body may have more of an influence on our health then our genetics. Crazy!

Probiotics may help to lower excess bad cholesterol by acting in a number of ways, including possibly "eating cholesterol", and interfering in the mechanisms that may cause an overproduction. In addition, probiotics may even help to lower blood pressure; a big job for such little bacteria!

B) Healthy Heart by CanPrev

http://www.canprev.ca/products/healthy_heart

One more thing I should bring up: if you smoke that really increases your risk of heart disease. I'm not going to tell you to quit because I live with a smoker and I know that has to be on your own terms. Train your brain to feel intense chest pain every time you inhale..maybe that will help. You can quit, I believe that, but if you aren't ready it makes it all the more important to take other precautions to protect your heart health.

Why is Going Organic Worth it?

by Randy Dimitrukowich @ Blog - Grove Health Supplements & Foods

Why is Going Organic Worth it?
Plus the Who, What, Where, and How of Organics in Canada

The organic industry in Canada is growing fast and the options for Canadians choosing to go organic are on the rise as well. Many Canadians are still unsure of the benefits of opting for certified organic products. The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA), along with the Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA) and the Canadian Organic Growers (COG), are teaming up to help Canadians celebrate the bounty of Organic Week this September 19 to 27.  Read on for the “who, what, where, why and how” Canadians can go organic this fall.

What does going organic mean in Canada?

It seems that organic is on everyone’s lips these days, but what does “organic” really mean?

Organic refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed; organic food is produced using environmentally and animal-friendly farming methods. Organic certification lets consumers know that every step along the supply chain has protected and maintained the organic integrity that begins at the farm.

In Canada, this system is overseen by government organic standards and regulations, and applies to both domestic and imported products. Canada’s organic standards are among the most widely recognized in the world, and place strict limits and prohibitions on the use of toxic and persistent pesticides; synthetic fertilizers; the routine use of drugs, antibiotics or synthetic hormones; animal cloning; genetic engineering (“GMOs”); sewage sludge (“biosolids”); and irradiation. Organic standards also forbid the use of artificial food colours, flavours, sweeteners, preservatives and many other processing aids and ingredients in processed foods.

Guided by these and other standards, organic is now the most heavily regulated and scrutinized food system in Canada, letting you help our environment while also choosing great tasting, healthy food for you and your family.

Who grows organic in Canada?

Did you know there are 3,732 organic farms in Canada covering 825 thousand hectares of land? Each producing fresh, home-grown food that is nutritious, tastes great and is good for our environment and communities. These farms employ 11,167 agricultural workers, making Canada the fourth largest market for organics in the world. On average, the organics industry brings in $3.5 billion in sales annually and over 20 million Canadians choose organic options for their groceries each week.

Organic farming is catching on fast in Canada. A recent survey found that 59 per cent of Canadians believe organic farming is better for a healthy environment. While total farms in Canada declined by 17 per cent since 2001, organic farms grew by 66.5 per cent. The industry is strongly attracting the next generation of farmers, too.  While eight per cent of farmers in Canada are under 35, this percentage rises to 12 per cent among organic farmers.

Where can you find organic food?

Did you know that Canada has a wide variety of organic products, all to be found at a store near you? By simply visiting chfa.ca and typing your postal code into the “Find a Retailer” tool you can find the closest natural health food store to you that carries organic products.

Organic products are getting easier and easier to find. It is now easier than ever to find certified organic options at cafés and restaurants, farmers’ markets and through food-box delivery programs or community supported agriculture.

And remember, always look for the “Canada Organic” logo—Organic products are always certified, so look for this symbol:

How can you go organic at home?

It’s as easy as choosing certified organic foods!  Certified organic products must pass stringent regulatory requirements, so look for a “Canada Organic” or “USDA Organic” logo on your foods to be confident they meet these criteria.

Start small, and progress slowly. It’s never too late to “go organic”. Check out chfa.ca to learn about the dirty dozen and the clean fifteen. By following this simple guide, developed by the Environmental Working Group, you can minimize your consumption of pesticides by as much as 80 per cent leading to better health for your whole family.

“The Dirty Dozen”; these foods showed the highest amount of pesticide residues, even after they were washed with high-power pressure water systems. Commonly consumed foods in this group include apples, potatoes, lettuce and grapes. When you’re buying these pieces of produce, opt for the organic selection.

“The Clean Fifteen” are good to grab and go wherever you are, from the grocery store or the famers market. They contain significantly less pesticide residue compared to the dirty dozen.

Once you have done your shopping you can share the love and prepare a special meal for your friends and family or host a dinner party showcasing some interesting organic ingredients.

This information was provided courtesy of Think Canada Organic  in partnership with the Canada Organic Trade Association and with support from Agriculture and AgriFood Canada through Growing Forward 2.  For more reasons why to go organic visit thinkcanadaorganic.ca or chfa.ca.

Staying Healthy All Summer Long

by Chelsea Hohnstein @ Blog - Grove Health Supplements & Foods

Summer is often a time we associate with better health; we are more active outdoors, and overall we feel better because we are in the sunshine. But there's also camping with hot dogs and hamburgers, drinks on the patio and lazy days in the sun. And around this midway point through our summer days, we start to feel ready again for September to come back so we can slide back into our regular routine (until the Holidays, our next big obstacle of the year).

So, what are some ways you can stay healthy and active this summer to avoid feeling awful during arguably the best time of the year?

1) Drink lots of water. Suns out and we naturally need more water to begin with. Couple that with the possibility of extra alcohol, more activity and the fact that most of us don't drink enough water to begin with and you have a recipe for dehydration. Carry a water bottle and squeeze some fresh lemon into your water or add some berries for an extra splash of nutrients and flavor! Or, try Stur drink mixers, which are similar to Mio's but free of artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, sugar and high fructose corn syrup.

2) Invest in a good quality body oil (no, not to lather yourself in before you sit in the sun). Winter is infamous for dry skin, but the summer months are just as hard on the skin. I love avocado oil; I add a couple drops of my favorite essential oils and put it on before bed. Some other options for skin oils:

Coconut oil, evening primrose oil, argan oil, almond oil, or grape seed oil. I've also gotten creative and blended shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil and castor oil with lime essential oil and I absolutely love it for intensive skin care. Body scrubs made of sugar and coconut oil, or olive oil and salt are also cheap to whip up and helpful to exfoliate. Do not exfoliate skin too frequently!

3) Use quality sun care. Natural sunblocks are very effective and free of harmful chemicals. They are great for those with sensitive skin, and those looking to have more environmentally friendly body care products. No matter what brand you go with, sun care is something that must be applied several times a day, which amounts to a lot of junk being absorbed through your skin if you are using chemicals.

4) Eat plenty of vegetables and fruit. This is perfect for the summer time because the extra vegetables and fruits will get us some extra water AND they don't require an oven to prepare! In the mornings, I boil eggs, or make one or two seasoned chicken breasts in the oven while it's cool so I can add them to an evening salad. Barbecuing is also a great way to beat the heat but be sure not to burn your meat as that can create AGE's (advanced glycation end products) that are harmful to your health.  I also love to make quinoa salads loaded with veggies for lunch because it's fast, and can be eaten cold. Salads don't have to be boring, so if you're a Pinterest fanatic like me, you can most certainly find some creative ways to dress up a salad.

And, I can't forget about my favorite part of summer. Smoothies with fresh berries!! There is nothing about a hot summer day that makes me want a hot breakfast. Smoothies are a perfect way to start your day, and a great way to obtain some nutrients. Creative options are endless, just make sure to throw in a protein source to start your day properly. Other additions to throw in your smoothie: chia or hemp seeds, flax oil or seeds, hemp or fish oil, bee pollen, greens such as spirulina or chlorella or Mega Foods Smoothie Boosters

5) Spend some time outside everyday. Nature is such a crucial part of our existence and for many of us, summer time is the only time we really connect with the Earth. I hate everything about winter. I don't participate in any fun winter activities (for my safety-I'm not graceful)  so I have nothing to look forward to when the snow flies other than Jillian Michael's DVD's and warm winter elixirs. But, summer time I am in my glory. Even sitting outside for ten minutes while I enjoy my morning coffee, or enjoying my supper on the deck makes me feel more grounded and at peace. If you are even more ambitious, do some stretching on the grass, a trail walk or yoga in the park!

6) Try new things! Summer is a time for fun and adventure. Here are some of my suggestions for this summer:

a) Zevia sugar free soda. If you do enjoy pop, but want to cut back on the sugar and artificial sweeteners these are a great alternative!! They are also handy if you have an evening that involves a little bit of alcohol, as this drastically cuts back on your sugar consumption. Let's face it: many individuals are not having just one of any kind of beverage in the summer time.

b) Bare organic mixers- speaking of alcohol, these are organic blends that you can mix with your choice of alcohol. I hear they are awesome, and are a great choice to bring to a friends BBQ.

c) Coconut bliss salted caramel ice cream- summer is a time a time for frozen goodies but for many of us, ice cream is a no-go. This ice cream made of coconut milk is a very tasty treat! PS: being made from coconut milk does NOT automatically make it healthy. It serves as a great option for those sensitive to dairy, so make sure to monitor portion sizes

d) Organic ketchup. I actually prefer the Simply Natural Organic Ketchup to Heinz because it has more of a tomato flavor, and less sugar per serving!

At Grove Health, we really believe we have the best of both worlds. Not only do we have foods to keep you healthy, we've got a great selection of premium quality supplements as well.  Here are two supplements to keep you going this summer, with very little effort and very little expense, so you can still afford to entertain your children:

1) Protein powder.

If you're busy with the kids and on the go, it's super easy to mix up a smoothie with some berries and hit the road. Protein alone does not constitute a meal but we do have meal replacements available for the extra busy!

2) MegaFood multivitamins for men or women:

These vitamins are made from whole foods with no synthetic or chemically altered vitamins. They are free of common allergens and non-GMO verified. Even more awesome is convenience. At one per day, these can fit into anyone's routine, and because they are whole food, they can be taken at anytime; with or without food!!

The Little Things DO Make A Difference

by Chelsea Hohnstein @ Blog - Grove Health Supplements & Foods

Do not fear failure but rather fear not trying.
— Roy T. Bennet, The Light in the Heart

The other day I had a conversation with a customer that wasn’t unlike many other conversations I’ve had, but this time it really resonated with me. He had come in for a specific product and we were out of stock of a particular flavor and I offered to order it for him. He laughed and said “oh no, it’s not for me. It’s for my wife: she’s the healthy one", and he went on to say that his diet is terrible and he hates exercise and he’s pretty comfortable with the fact that he’s likely going to die young from a heart attack because he loves pop too much. And I laughed too, because that certainly parallels my own relationship, and the expression “you can bring a horse to the water but you can’t make it drink” came to mind.

But as I thought more and more about what he was implying I thought deeper about how our mentality shapes our decisions. I am health conscious and overall, make health conscious decisions, and that means I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about what it means to define myself as an unhealthy person and make choices that reflect that view. I bet it’s easy to assume that if you don’t eat well or exercise that you might as well throw in the towel and not make any effort.

If I could have altered that conversation in any way without being the naggy girl who can’t mind her own business at the health food store I would have told him that just because he’s not perfect doesn’t mean he can’t try. We’re so wrapped up in these programs,  “lifestyle changes” and an overwhelming amount of information that tells us everything we thought was right was wrong, that we forget the power of the little things that we can do. Maybe small things like incorporating fermented foods, eating more vegetables, going for a walk once in awhile, or taking a supplement seem trivial but they can make meaningful changes in our body. The habit alone can be enough to change our psychology from thinking we are “unhealthy” to “moderately healthy” and perhaps even spiral into a few more positive changes.

So, since I couldn’t lecture my customer about how valuable it is to see yourself in a different light, I’ll lecture our readers. You don’t have to be perfect, but it doesn’t hurt to make any small effort to be better!

We’re always happy to help if you want a place to start, and I promise we won’t force you to change your whole life, or fork out more than your budget. We’re here to remind you that better health is always attainable, even when you think it’s not worth it to try.

If you are interested in making a few changes, we have our Customer Appreciation Day every 3rd Wednesday of the month. While you’re in there you can check out 360 Wellness who have a ton of really amazing practitioners who could also help you if you’re feeling a little lost.  We’d all love to see you:)

Since I first studied the vaccination issues in 1984, when pregnant with our  daughter, I get daily confirmation that we made the right decision to question the status quo. Whether it … Continue reading Vaccination and trusting ‘authorities’??

Probiotic Yogurts: Effective or Not?

by NOVA Probiotics @ NOVA Probiotics

Most yogurts that are sold in supermarkets today are pasteurized, meaning all the live bacteria originally inside were killed through this process. Yogurts that contain probiotics have these probiotics added to them after pasteurization. Make sure these yogurts always say they contain “live and active cultures”, as probiotics are not efficient when dead. Also,...

My Top favorite products of 2015:

by Chelsea Hohnstein @ Blog - Grove Health Supplements & Foods

1) Charcoal face sponge

Since I bought this I have had about half as many breakouts, and when I do get one, it takes about half the amount of time to get rid of it. I use it morning and evening, and replace mine every three months. It is such a neat product and comes at an awesome price.

 2) Evelyn Iona ginger glow bronzer & lip gloss.

Okay, I'm cheating because this is two products but I love this bronzer and lip gloss.  I spend a ridiculous amount of money on makeup and every time I try a new bronzer or lip gloss I am disappointed. There are testers and applicators at the store..pop in and try it!

3) 100% pure shampoo and conditioner

I have always used salon brand shampoo and conditioner-until I discovered this. I have terrible water and chemically treated hair but I can still get a brush through my hair after a shower, and my hair is so shiny! I also love the way it smells. Ladies with long hair..you know how important that is.

And I'm cheating again but pretty much every product from 100% pure is awesome.

4) Eco vessel water bottle

This is one of those products that I know I truly got my money's worth out of. When they say it keeps your water cold for 8 hours they aren't lying. I have a water bottle with ice cubes before bed and sometimes when I get up for the day, there is still ice cubes in the bottle. It's a great size, and has a straw. Whenever there is a straw I feel I drink more water; so two of those bottles full and I've had a great day!

5) Clean conscience cleaning products

I love the glass cleaner and the all purpose cleaner. They work well and they smell great. With a newborn and three dogs in my house, I don't want chemicals lurking everywhere, and a pleasant smell is important to keep my house smelling fresh despite the zoo under its roof.

6) HMF Natogen probiotics

These probiotics are awesome for my baby Ryland. He has had several different kinds and though they have all worked well, this one is the winner. He has reflux and while probiotics do not diminish it completely, the severity is definitely reduced.

7) MegaFood Blood Builder

I swear by this product for iron. It is food based so can be taken on a full or empty stomach. It does not cause constipation and is really gentle on the stomach. I started taking it when I was pregnant and I've had such an abundance of energy. Thank goodness because I have yet to develop the skill of napping.

8) Citrus kiss essential oil by Purewow

This smell is divine. I love the smells of citrus and I use this oil everywhere: the bath, in a spray bottle on my sheets, on the dog beds, and in my humidifier. I really can't get enough of it.

9) Carlson Fish Oil

This is an excellent, high-quality fish oil that is extremely cost effective if you are using it for maintenance.

10) Routine deodorant

This stuff is awesome. It is one of the most effective natural deodorants I've ever tried and it lasts all day. They have options for vegans (no beeswax), for those who require a higher potency product, pregnant women and men. I have had my container since September and I am just now starting to get low.

Trust me, finding ten products that I loved was too easy. There is a long list of runner ups of things I use every day, and many more that I look forward to trying in 2016.

Why Organic is the New Black

by Shauna MacKinnon @ Organic Week

In the not too distant past organic food was exclusively consumed by hippies and health nuts. “Natural health stores” carried more supplements than fresh food. If you didn’t grow organic yourself (on your back-to-the-land farm) it would have been hard to come by. Sustained double digit market growth for well over a decade has changed […]

by Anne Macey @ Organic Week

Cholesterol drugs increase Alzheimers

by LoreneB @ Healthy Solutions – Natural Path Remedies Research Blog
