Chiropractic Care and Headaches

by noreply@blogger.com (Family First Chiropractic and Wellness) @ Family First Chiropractic and Wellness

Being able to think clearly and calmly allows us to make decisions, process emotions, and carry on with our day-to-day lives. That clarity can be easily destroyed with a headaches. Many people have occasional headaches, but frequent headaches that affect your ability to sleep or get on with your day can be disabling.
Different Types of Headaches
Common types of headaches are tension, migraine, and cervicogenic headaches.
Tension-type headaches commonly present as band-like tension around the head, whereas migraine headaches usually result in pain on one side of the head and are commonly accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.
With cervicogenic headaches, the neck is the source of the problem but the pain is perceived in one or more areas of the head and/or face. The causes of headaches are not always well understood but a family history of headaches, neck stiffness, and stress are common factors.
How can chiropractors help with headaches?

Chiropractors can assess, diagnose, and manage headaches. Current evidence suggests that chiropractic care, including manual therapy, can be effective in treating cervicogenic and tension headaches.1 Studies have also shown that chiropractic care can help decrease the intensity and frequency of migraines.1 Treatment options may include:
1.      Manual therapy (specific adjustments)
2.      Soft tissue therapy
3.      Modalities including electrical stimulation, acupuncture, and ultrasound
4.      Rehabilitation (Stretches and Exercises)
5.      Lifestyle changes and education (Ergonomic changes at work, at computer)
6.      Referral and co-management
It’s important to take headaches seriously. Consider consulting a chiropractor if you often have headaches, if you frequently take a pain reliever for your headaches, if your headache pattern changes, or if your headaches are getting worse. Seek prompt attention if your headache is sudden and severe, follows a head injury, or is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking.

Chiropractic can provide fast, effective relief of neck pain and headaches. If you or loved ones suffer from headaches, call to start the healing process with Chiropractic.

Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to MS?

by noreply@blogger.com (Family First Chiropractic and Wellness) @ Family First Chiropractic and Wellness

A recent study published in Neurology, reinforces the view that vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor for multiple sclerosis (MS). The study, which compared vitamin D levels in blood donated by pregnant women without MS, showed a twofold increase in MS risk among those considered vitamin D deficient compared with those who had adequate levels. While numerous previous studies have shown similar findings, this was the largest longitudinal investigation yet to directly assess whether vitamin D levels in healthy individuals predict their risk for MS.

"Previous studies had fewer than 20 MS cases, and here we had over 1000 women with MS, so it was a very large study," A Finnish Maternity Cohort, which comprises over 800,000 women who have provided a blood sample for routine prenatal testing, typically between 10 and 14 weeks' gestation. In 2004, Finland formally recommended that pregnant women take vitamin D supplements. On average, serum samples were collected 9.3 years before the MS diagnosis. Women in the study collectively had relatively high levels of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency. This may be because Finns, living in a northern hemisphere, historically have had low vitamin D levels. Also, the Finnish Maternity Cohort dates back to 1983, before many of the recommendations surrounding prenatal vitamins came into play.

Compared with women with adequate vitamin D levels, those with deficient levels had a 43% increased risk for MS. Compared with women with insufficient levels, those who were deficient had a 27% increased MS risk

A limitation of the study was that it could not adjust for other MS risk factors, such as smoking, body mass index. As well, the study included mostly white participants.

"Studies are indicating that it seems that the more vitamin D you can get, the lower your risk seems to go, but we haven't identified a threshold level yet."

"Collectively, 3 studies in adults now show an association between vitamin D levels and risk of developing MS years later; the risk appears to be greatest among those with levels in the deficient range.

"Vitamin D supplementation is a simple intervention that would be highly cost-effective even if it prevents only a proportion of MS cases.” "Harm from such a strategy is unlikely; doses of up to 4,000 IU/day are safe for adults even in pregnancy, so they could be used through late adolescence and adulthood as such doses would be adequate to achieve vitamin D sufficiency in most individuals."It may also produce other benefits; supplementation during infancy has been shown to be associated with greater bone mass among girls aged seven to nine years. Canada as in Finland has long winters and as such, we are more likely to have vitamin D deficiency. It is important in winter months and during pregnancy to use a quality vitamin D supplement.

For your convenience, at Family First Chiropractic we carry these and many other supplements.

Pregnancy Pain? We can help!

by noreply@blogger.com (Family First Chiropractic and Wellness) @ Family First Chiropractic and Wellness

Pregnant? In pain? Baby in the wrong position? We can help you!

Have you been told that you have told that pain is part of being pregnant?
Chiropractic spinal and pelvic adjustments will reduce or resolve pregnancy discomforts such as symphysis pubis pain (SPD), groin pain, back pain, hip pain, bursitis due to pregnancy, sciatica, pelvic girdle pain (PGP), mid back pain, carpal tunnel pain of pregnancy and heartburn.
Why be told that pain is part of pregnancy?
Chiropractic care can alleviate common pregnancy pain and decrease your labour time significantly.
Experienced prenatal chiropractic care aids with optimal fetal positioning by helping the pelvis and uterus to be symmetrical and balanced. Adjustments will help the baby to fit the pelvis to engage properly to help stimulate cervical ripening. Adjustments also make the pelvis more flexible so that pelvic joints move more easily in labor, the sacrum can become fixated and this can cause slowing or stalling in labor.

Dr. Jeanne Ohm sends this description of Chiropractic techniques for optimal fetal positioning and easier birthing: A chiropractic adjustment called the Webster technique is a specific sacral adjustment to help facilitate the mother’s pelvic alignment and nerve system function. This in turn balances pelvic muscles and ligaments, reduces torsion to the uterus. This may offer a greater potential for optimal fetal positioning. Originally used for breech presentations and then posterior presentations, current research is revealing the benefits of receiving the Webster technique throughout pregnancy for the prevention of dystocia. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association offers chiropractors advanced classes on care in pregnancy, including the Webster technique. Providers certified in this technique are listed on the ICPA website here: www.icpa4kids.org.
Dr. Carol Phillips, DC,recommends addressing the skeletal system through adjustments, but equally addressing the fascia (with myofascial release) and the cranial rhythm (with gentle craniosacral therapy). ‘ Taken from spinningbabies website www.spinningbabies.com

‘The Gardner Bagnell Technique for Breech Presentation was designed with the breech baby in mind, but has also been used very effectively for transverse, oblique and posterior presentations as well. It is a chiropractic technique that focuses on the alignment of the spine and pelvis of the mother to be.Most recently,  a very specific order of adjusting has been uncovered that has catapulted the success rate even higher.  When this precise order or adjusting is followed, the results are unbelievable.  This technique focuses on subluxation removal, alignment of the pelvis and releasing ligamentous spasms. However, it is unlike the other techniques that are currently being taught. This technique has a different primary focus and protocol than the other techniques. ‘ Taken from Pregnancy chiropractic  www.pregnancychiropractic.com

Dr. Joelle Johnson has been certified in the Webster techniques since 1999 and is a longtime member of the ICPA. She was certified in the Gardner Technique in 2009. Dr. Johnson  has a focused practice on prenatal, postnatal and pediatric care at Family First Chiropractic and Wellness 142 Erickson Drive, Red Deer. T4R 2C3

How does Craniosacral compliment other Medical Interventions?

by noreply@blogger.com (Family First Chiropractic and Wellness) @ Family First Chiropractic and Wellness

Most Medical and Healthcare practitioners see CranioSacral Therapy as a gentle and non-invasive Complementary Therapy - it is considered as suitable for the co-treatment of a number of conditions.
Many medical professionals criteria for recommending  therapies is that if it is doing no harm, makes you feel good and does not cost too much then go ahead.

To answer the question more directly, I often receive new clients in the following situations:
·         They have been through formal medical channels.
Often in the case of
back pain, stress related illness etc. clients feel they have exhausted all that formal medicine has to offer. This is ideal from my point of view as a full medical history has been built up and the individual's condition has been pre-checked by a medical practitioner.
·         The client wishes to complement formal medical treatment with another therapy.
Many of my
pregnant clients and moms with infants and children are receiving formal medical care for their conditions and related complications. They typically continue with this care as they attend CranioSacral Therapy to further relieve symptoms or to reach the parts that they feel formal medical interventions cannot reach.

In summary, in my experience the answer is yes - CranioSacral Therapy can be used alongside formal medical interventions.
As always, first check with your Healthcare practitioner.

Healing Leaky Gut Syndrome With Probiotics

by NOVA Probiotics @ NOVA Probiotics

The intestinal lining is responsible for this common gastrointestinal disorder. Leaky Gut happens when the intestinal lining is more porous than normal, when large spaces appear in the gut wall allowing substances to leak out of the gut and into the blood stream. In such cases, substances like bacteria, fungi, parasites and partially digested molecules might dissipate through...

Supportive/ Maintenance Treatment Works!

by noreply@blogger.com (Family First Chiropractic and Wellness) @ Family First Chiropractic and Wellness

A paper presented at the European Chiropractors' Union (ECU) convention earlier this year underscores the advantages of regular chiropractic care. The authors, looked at how chiropractic maintenance care (MC) could prevent new episodes of nonspecific low back pain or minimize its impact. The purpose of their study was to "investigate the effect of MC as compared to symptomatic treatment on reducing recurrent and persistent LBP."
The multi-center, randomized clinical trial was conducted in Sweden, with patients provided with either treatment at regular intervals, regardless of symptoms (MC), or symptomatic treatment whereby patients were treated only when consulting for pain. The MC group was provided with chiropractic care at one- to three-month intervals.
This is an altogether familiar scenario, in that most patients only go for chiropractic care when they are in pain or when something is bothering them. Unfortunately, by the time a patient recognizes their pain, the problem may have been there for some time and damage has been done.  If only they would visit their chiropractor periodically, regardless of symptoms, a point study results make glaringly clear:
"The MC group consisted of 163 subjects who reported 19.3 fewer days with bothersome LBP over the 12 month follow-up compared to the 154 subjects in the control group. The MC group had an average of 7 visits during the study, compared to 5 visits in the control group."
Let's Do the Math
So, here's the math for the average patient. Two extra visits to your chiropractor each year will result in almost 20 extra days without back pain. For me, that works out to about $4 per pain-free day ... I'll take it!
While monthly chiropractic care can be very beneficial, it is clear that most people should be seeing their doctor of chiropractic at least every two months or so. We all need to understand a little regular scheduling could significantly improve our quality of life. Imagine how many days of pain could be eliminated if everyone enjoyed chiropractic at least every two months.
For my whole career I have emphasized regular treatments and not chase pain. Don’t wait for small problems to become big ones. The old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is supported by these types of studies.

Probiotic Yogurts: Effective or Not?

by NOVA Probiotics @ NOVA Probiotics

Most yogurts that are sold in supermarkets today are pasteurized, meaning all the live bacteria originally inside were killed through this process. Yogurts that contain probiotics have these probiotics added to them after pasteurization. Make sure these yogurts always say they contain “live and active cultures”, as probiotics are not efficient when dead. Also,...
