Should I Take a Probiotic Every Day?

by Dave Steer @ Natren Probiotics Blog

The human body contains an ecosystem of bacteria that perform essential functions such as digestion and immune system maintenance. Like any ecosystem, it requires a certain amount of give and take to keep it in optimal balance. That is why a probiotic supplement fits into the daily schedule. As friendly bacteria leave the body, probiotics fill the void to keep that critical ecosystem diverse and well proportioned. Is taking a probiotic each day too much? Well, it’s not just safe to take a probiotic supplement daily, it is recommended for most people. Consider some reasons you might need probiotics every.... [Read More...]

More Evidence on Probiotics for Weight Loss

by Dave Steer @ Natren Probiotics Blog

There is plenty of clinical evidence that the use of probiotics might help facilitate weight loss, but a new review and meta-analysis puts it all into perspective. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 37 percent of the adult population is obese. That’s an important statistic when you consider the role obesity plays in disease. Obesity is defined as an excess amount of body fat — typically a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more. Health Supplements: Meal Replacements

by @ Noah's Natural Foods: Latest News

Between the prominent rise of fast food and modern industry relying more and more on people sitting at a desk watching a computer screen than manual labor, among other things, more and more Canadians are looking for ways to help maintain their weight. And as the market for weight loss grows, so do the weight loss trends. However, with so many products on the market, how do you know which ones will be best for your lifestyle? And if you are already living a healthy, all-natural lifestyle, will you see the results you want?

Natural Health Supplements and Meal Replacements

One way many people attempt to lose weight is by changing their diet. At first, it can be easy to simply cut foods that we know are bad for us: fast food, sugary sodas and energy drinks, and candy are all examples of unhealthy food that can be replaced with healthier alternatives such as salads, herbal teas, and fruits. In addition to replacing high calorie foods with calorie-dense healthy foods, though, many people are turning to natural health supplements including complete meal replacements. Meal replacements are essentially nutrient-rich powders that are used to make beverages that allow the user to forgo eating a traditional meal. In essence, they are a specialized form of a whey protein shake that is designed to provide complete nutrition that satisfies hunger rather much the way a pre-workout supplement is designed to give extra energy.

Whenever starting a new diet or adding health supplements to your daily regimen, you should consult your physician to make a weight loss plan together. However, if you have any questions about the meal replacement products in the Noah’s Natural Foods online store, please contact us today!

Natural Beauty Products: Natural Hair Care Products for Kids

by @ Noah's Natural Foods: Latest News

There are plenty of reasons to use natural hair care products, ranging from the healthing properties of natural herbs to the lack of synthetic chemicals that can cause harm to your skin cells from long term exposure to caring about the effects on the environment and beyond. Whichever your reason for using natural beauty products maybe, natural hair care products are great for kids because they can help build a lifelong foundation for living a healthy, all-natural lifestyle.

Safe, All Natural Skin Care For Your Children

One of the biggest reasons many people use all natural skin care products that include everything from body wash to shampoo to moisturizers is the products do not contain synthetic chemicals that are produced in big factories. By using all natural ingredients, these products are inherently safer and very gentle on the skin. And, because children tend to have such sensitive skin, all natural hair care products are less likely to produce unwanted side effects such as flaking skin or rashes that can be caused by harsher chemicals.

A Foundation For The Future

In addition to being more gentle on your child’s skin, using all natural hair care products at a young age can help your child build a foundation for a healthier lifestyles. A child who grows up using a natural shampoo such as Kiss My Face Kids 2 in 1 Shampoo & Conditioner is more likely to mature and purchase all natural products on their own as they age. Additionally, natural beauty products are a great way to talk to your child about their health as well as the positive environmental impact of using natural products that will help your child grow into a wise, worldly adult.

The New Polio Virus, Enterovirus D68, and It's Coverup by the CDC

by @ Autism Coach: Latest News

One of the most under-reported important stories in the mainstream media this past year is a deadly outbreak of Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), which results in symptoms of polio, paralysis and death.  Last year, there were 1273 reported cases of this virus in every state, 120 children were paralyzed - most have yet to recover, and 14 children died.  This year the CDC is refusing to report cases and is violating the law by refusing to respond to Freedom of Information Requests from investigative reporter, Sheryl Attiksson, concerning this outbreak.

In contrast, the 143 cases of measles that were reported in the U.S. last year received blaring attention in the media and were vigorously promoted by Centers for Disease Control (CDC) spokesmen, killed no-one, and were used a pretext to impose enforced vaccination legislation.

Why would this be the case that a deadly health risk is covered up and one that is minimally risky for people in the United States is the focus of the CDC and media as needing attention?  The answer is sadly obvious - the CDC no longer operates as an organization to protect public health but exists solely to promote the profits of pharmaceutical corporations.

Why the cover-up?  It turns out that the only children who become sick from this new polio virus are those who have been vaccinated for the MMR, polio, and influenza.

Symptoms

EV-68 can mimic those of the influenza virus, coming on fast like a cold, but can have a much more dire impact on those that fall ill. Dr. Mary Anne Jackson, Kansas City Children's Mercy Hospital's division director for infectious disease shared her concern with CNN.  "It's worse in terms of scope of critically ill children who require intensive care. I would call it unprecedented. I've practiced for 30 years in pediatrics, and I've never seen anything quite like this."  Children have come down with this with cold-like symptoms one day and have died or become paralyzed overnight.  So far the outcome on recovering from the paralysis is not good.

How it Spreads

Enteroviruses, such as EV-D68, are related to the common cold virus and can spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing, by close contact with infected persons or by touching a contaminated surface. In general, Enteroviruses circulate and peak in the summer and fall months so it is not unusual to see increased illnesses caused by Enteroviruses this time of year, however the intensity at which the virus is attacking children is rare.

Prior Vaccination Puts Children at Risk

There are more than 100 types of enteroviruses causing about 10 to 15 million infections in the United States each year, according to the CDC. They are carried in the intestinal tract and often spread to other parts of the body.

Although there is no known vaccine for the virus, and the scope which it will reach is also unknown, those that have become infected are following a common theme. They have all been vaccinated with the MMR vaccines, influenza vaccines, and polio vaccines. Of course, many children in the United States have been vaccinated, and most are required to be vaccinated in order to enter school. However, it is interesting to note that the illness is not occurring, yet, in children that have not been vaccinated.  This is also believed to the be the case for the original polio virus where the use of other vaccines and antibiotics precipated the polio outbreaks of the 20th century.

"So far all of the reports we are seeing are coming in from children who have been partially or fully immunized," said infectious disease specialist Dr. Heather Ashton. "Reports are managed through the National Enterovirus Surveillance System and the summaries thus far are all coming in from vaccinated pediatric populations in the U.S. and Canada."

Dr. Pritish Tosh, an infectious diseases physician-researcher at the Mayo Clinic, added: "When dealing with respiratory illnesses in young people, they can be severe and result in hospitalizations and the requirement of intensive care. And it looks as through this strain of the virus is causing infections in children severe enough to get them admitted to the hospital."

Why Vaccinated Children are More Susceptible to Illness

Besides environmental toxins and our food supply, vaccines remain as one of the biggest threats to the health of our children.

Unvaccinated kids are five times less likely to have asthma than the vaccinated, 2.5 times less likely to have skin problems and 8 times less likely to be hyperactive.

In a 2011 study in the Journal of Virology researchers at the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands have demonstrated that a regular flu vaccine in children actually worsens a key aspect of their flu-fighting immune system. This research was not conducted by vaccine-disliking scientists. Rather, it was conducted by pro-vaccine researchers who have spent their careers trying to develop better vaccines. Lead author Rogier Bodewes delivered the sobering message as he explained that flu vaccines "have potential drawbacks that have previously been under appreciated and that are also a matter of debate."

It involved highly advanced scientific evaluation of the immune system. The researchers collected blood from 27 healthy, unvaccinated children with an average age of 6 years old, and 14 children with cystic fibrosis who received an annual flu shot. The unvaccinated children were found to have a superior immune response, giving them broader protection against what they might face in an actual flu season, including pandemic strains.

According to [2011 Aug&91; State of health of unvaccinated children: Illnesses in unvaccinated children, the results show that unvaccinated children are far less affected by common diseases.

Asthma, hayfever and neurodermatitis. A German study with 17461 children between 0-17 years of age (KIGGS) showed that 4.7% of these children suffer from asthma, 10.7% of these children from hayfever and 13.2% from neurodermatitis. These numbers differ in western countries, i.e. the prevalence of asthma among children in the US is 6% whereas it is 14-16% in Australia (Australia's Health 2004, AIHW). The prevalence of asthma among unvaccinated children in the study was 0.2%, hayfever 1.5% and neurodermatitis 2%.

According to the KIGGS study more than 40% of children between the ages of 3 and 17 years were sensitized against at least one allergen tested (20 common allergens were tested) and 22.9% had an allergic disease.

KIGGS showed that 12.8% of the children in Germany had herpes and 11% suffer from otitis media (an inflammation of the middle ear). If you compare this to unvaccinated childen herpes among is very rare (less than 0.5%).

In young kids under the age of 3 warts are very rare. After the 3 years of age, however, the prevalence is rising. In the ages between 4 and 6 years, 5-10% of the kids have warts, in the age group 16-18, 15-20% have warts. (Source: netdoktor.at). Only 3% of unvaccinated children in the survey had warts.

Nanobacteria and Mycoplasma

There are also similarities to mycoplasma and to newly-discovered nanobacteria, currently considered to be the smallest forms of life and known to contaminate commercial vaccines. Nanobacteria are ubiquitous and may be involved in the pathology of many diseases currently considered of unknown cause.

Donald W. Scott, the editor of The Journal of Degenerative Diseases and the co-founder of the Common Cause Medical Research Foundation, links vaccines to AIDS (as did Hillerman) and to US bio-weapons research, and says they are contaminated with mycoplasma, a primitive bacteria that takes apart cell walls.

In May 2005, Dr Olavi Kajander delivered a sobering message to a joint meeting of the US FDA and the European Medicines Agency on viral safety when he presented new evidence to support something first published in 1997: that vaccines are contaminated with nanobacteria. Since 1999, government agencies have done virtually nothing to investigate the claim, due largely to that NIH experiment which failed to use particles discovered by Kajander as control samples; so now that the vaccine contamination has been officially reported to authorities, the question is: what will be done? The answer is nothing unless we forcefully lobby for legislation exempting pharmaceutical companies from being sued, which is basically unconstitutional, be repealed.  As long as Big Pharma can make billions from dangerous vaccines with no accountability, it will continue.

Vaccines Are Causing Mutations That May Jeopardize The Health of Future Generations

Vaccines are causing an unprecedented number of mutations creating superbugs and potent viruses and bacteria that may eventually threaten future generations and humanity itself. Evidence continues to mount from the scientific community who now admit that certain vaccines are in-fact causing both viral and bacterial mutations.

Life-threatening pathogens are capable of evolving rapidly and developing genetic decoys that serve to disguise them from even the most powerful drugs. University of Oxford researcher Rory Bowden found that pathogens switch genetic material with other bacteria, but predominantly for the part of the genome responsible for making the cell coating, which is the area targeted by vaccines.

Former post-doctoral researcher of the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics, Grainne Long found that vaccination led to a 40-fold enhancement of B. parapertussis colonization in the lungs. His data suggested that the vaccine may be contributing to the observed rise in whooping cough incidence over the last decade by promoting B. parapertussis infection.

Microbiologists from the University of NSW have found variants of the pertussis bacteria with a particular genetic signature have increased to 86 percent of all samples taken from infected people after a continuing whooping cough epidemic began in 2008.

Although the strains were present in Australia as early as 2000, they accounted for only 31 per cent of all samples collected between 2000 and 2007 - suggesting they have flourished alongside the current vaccine.

He warned that other countries using similar vaccines should be alert for shifts in genetic features detected in the whooping cough bug.

In southern Italy, 44 contacts of hepatitis B virus carriers, including infants of carrier mothers, became HBsAg positive despite passive and active vaccination according to standard protocols. In 32 of these vaccinees infection was confirmed by the presence of additional markers of viral replication. HBV strains containing vaccine escape mutation patterns are replication competent and are shown to be infectious and pathogenic.

Why a Nutritional Protocol for Autism?

by @ Autism Coach: Latest News

Why does a child on the autism spectrum need any therapies, nutritional or non-nutritional, in the first place? It is often because something has interfered with their neurological development and they are not meeting developmental milestones. According to current trends in research, the underlying cause of autism is biomedical. A disrupted digestive and immune interfere with and skew neurological development. All beneficial therapies, nutritional or non-nutritional, help the child to make beneficial neurological connections.

To help a child, teen or adult within the autism spectrum reach their full potential, it is critical to identify and treat underlying nutritional and health issues. Helping to provide the nutritional building blocks that are missing can help to normalize metabolic processes, leading to optimal neurological development. Nutritional intervention help a child’s metabolic processes function optimally so he or she can get the most out of the time and/or money invested in other non-nutritional therapies.

What Does Any Therapy That Helps Autism Do - Nutritional or Non-Nutritional?

The symptoms of autism are caused by neurological disconnect that often leads to lack of eye contact, distorted sensory input (over/under-sensitive to sight, hearing, touch, taste), lack of integration of senses (the senses don’t always take in information and store information in an organized fashion), disorganized perception, storing and retrieval of information about oneself and the outside world.

All effective autism therapies improve neurological connection, help to integrate the senses, and build an organized internal cognitive map that accurately reflects the outside world and one’s relation to it. Neurofeedback, ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis), Speech Therapy, even music lessons, or a caring person interacting with the child in a positive and stimulating way all help a child make neurological connections.

Why Don’t They Make Sufficient Neurological Connections during Early Development?

The reason children need extra help in making neurological connections is because their underlying metabolic processes are not working properly. What causes this to happen? Many researchers there are environmental triggers - sometimes one trigger is enough to push a child into metabolic disruption, sometimes it is multiple triggers that weaken the child until they are finally pushed over the edge from normal development into developing symptoms of autism. Triggers include environmental toxins and disruptors of the immune system and endocrine system found in the drugs used during childbirth (pitocin and anesthetics), vaccines, air, food and water.

Other conditions believed to be caused by environmental triggers include ADD/ADHD, OCD, depression, food and inhalant allergies, dyslexia, seizures, and diabetes. Often a single individual will eventually end up with multiple diagnoses. Families who have a history of diabetes, color blindness, autoimmune conditions, and depression have an increased likelihood of having a child within the autism spectrum.

What Happens when Metabolic Processes are Disrupted?

The metabolic processes within the body are incredibly complex, interconnected and delicate and are unfortunately easily disrupted through exposure to toxins, even in parts per billion.

Generally, children with autism mal-digest their food, have a leaky gut, chronic intestinal infections including yeast. These infections result in the child not making the digestive enzymes and vitamins needed to build the brain. They are frequently malnourished even if they eat well because they can’t properly digest their food. Standard over the counter vitamins often contain cheaper, artificial forms of vitamins that children within the autism spectrum can’t convert to the natural more absorbable forms that they need in order obtain the buildling blocks to support metabolic processes within the body that ultimately lead to normal neurological development.

Maldigestion in grains containing the protein gluten (wheat, rye, barley) and in animal milk products containing the protein casein is extremely problematic for the majority of individual on the spectrum. When mal-digested (not broken down properly) gluten and casein proteins form opiates that flood the brain and directly interfere with neurological development. These children are like little junkies who crave the very foods that actually cause symptoms of autism such as Chicken McNuggets, Pizza, Macaroni and Cheese. 90% of children within the autism spectrum significantly improve when they are put on a diet that is free of gluten and casein.

Also artificial ingredients (including colors and flavors, MSG, aspartame) and GMO products are best avoided as they contain toxins that can over-excite, damage and kill neurons, and often also contain endocrine system disruptors. The endocrine system are the glands that excrete hormones that are directly involved triggering developmental growth as the child matures.

Current research indicates autism is triggered by exposure to toxins in those who are genetically susceptible. Those who are genetically less efficient at detoxifying are more at risk for developing autism. A specific gene, the MTHFR gene, is closely being studied, which makes the enzyme methyltransferase that is involved in detoxification - individuals with autism tend to have genetic aberrations (polymorphisms) on specific points of this gene, causing to the methyltransferase enzyme to function less efficiently, when the body is exposed to environmental triggers that would lead to autism.

What Nutrients are Typically Deficient?

Metabolic disruptions often result in a deficiency of:

B Vitamins (especially folate, B12, B6)

Beneficial minerals - zinc, magnesium

Neurotransmitters (such as GABA), serotonin, melatonin,

Specific amino acids (building blocks for neurotransmitters and neurons)

Glutathione - the body’s most powerful molecule for removing toxins including heavy metals and environmental pollutants

Methyl donors - methyl groups (a chemical molecule are needed to proper switching on and off of genes, for detoxification processes)

These metabolic disruptions often result in excessive levels of:

Cortisol (the fight or flight hormone - disrupting sleep and causing anxiety - and causing magnesium and zinc to be flushed out of the body)

Copper (excessive copper can lead to seizures)

Neurotransmitters that overexcite neurons (causing hyperactivity and neurological damage - such as glutamate)

Ammonia (from yeast overgrowth - also causing brain fog and neurological damage)

Proprionic Acid (found in Swiss cheese, actually lowers cholesterol so many of these kids have low cholesterol - which is not necessarily a good thing)

Intestinal pathogens - Yeast, Clostridia, Klebsiella, - these produce neurotoxins as by-products

A Typical Nutritional Protocol for Autism

Nutritional therapies can help compensate for metabolic processes skewed by exposure to toxins. You must remember that every child is different and may have different nutritional needs as each child has a unique genetic makeup. Other considerations in helping a child are time, budget, and the personalities of the child’s parents/caregivers. There isn’t a all-size fits all one solution for every child within the autism spectrum.

Unfortunately, for most children there isn’t a single supplement that can “fix” them and correct all metabolic imbalances. There generally many metabolic processes out of balance that need to be restored and the most effective nutritional protocol addresses these processes.

However, there are certain approaches that help most children within the autism spectrum. Here is an example of a typical effective nutritional protocol:

Gluten casein free diet, GAPS diet - or a combination of the two; getting the child off foods causing neurological damage is almost as important as providing supplements. These kids pretty much all have yeast infections, so often a low-sugar, lower-carb diet is of benefit. The GAPs (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) diet helps to kill off intestinal pathogens.

Enyzmes - production of critical enzymes is inhibited so it is beneficial to supplement.

A good multi-vitamin with the most bioavailable sources of vitamins including:

folate, B6, and B12, beneficial minerals.

Methyl donors - help with switching on and off of genes and detoxification.

Probiotics - good to switch them periodically. They keep down populations of pathogens that interfere with digestion, contribute to leaky gut, food allergies, and produce neurotoxins.

Autism Coach Nutritional Protocol Basics

Every individual is biolotically unique and there is not a one-size fits all protocol for everyone.  That being said, the products below provide a solid nutritional foundation for about 90% of individuals within the autism spectrum. Everything mentioned below is either liquid or can be mixed into a liquid such as a non-dairy pudding or smoothie (for example with fruit and coconut milk).

Note: If your child is diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, the methylated B Vitamins or the Carnosine could make them more hyper; however often they have opposite effect of helping to improve focus and reduce impulsive behavior; but often these product help with focus and impulse control.

Autism Coach supplement kit - economically provides the basis for a nutritional protocol using products that help the majority of individuals within the autism spectrum. Everything in the kit can be mixed into a single drink and taken in the morning. It includes four products: autism enzymes to break down gluten and casein proteins so they can’t form opiates, a multivitamin powder formulated for autism with active B vitamins and other vitamins and minerals in their most absorbable forms, a methyl donor to support methylation and detoxification, Carnosine - a molecule naturally found in the human body found in a double blind study by pediatric neurologist, Dr. Michael Chez, to improve level of functioning for the majority of individuals within the autism spectrum. For a description of the products in this kit, please click here.

Glutathione - supports detoxification; works best with Vitamin C. We offer a high quality pure non-corn derived Vitamin C powder that can be mixed with glutathione a drink such as orange juice. Here is a link to our Glutathione and link to our Vitamin C powder which dissolves easily in water.

Probiotics - we recommend rotating probiotics every month or so because pathogens can become resistant to them. Here is a link to Autism Coach probiotics.
